While the horn is playing beautifully and with great emotion, it is way too loud. I have never heard it played that way. Still...it is very nicely executed.
@erstehorniste I disagree: besides being too loud, it has a very 'brassy' and strident tone, nothing like the haunting, mellow quality usually associated with this piece.
@AMAC48 It is quite possible that the way it is recorded or placement of microphones are very hot so it sounds louder than the audience is hearing it. But also, it is possible that the conductor asked for it to be louder. It sounds like that's a possibility when you hear the orchestra come in later. Overall this performance sounds louder than I usually hear it. But again the hall is live and the recording may be much hotter than from the audience's perspective.
Wow, again sombody with an intelligent and civilised comment.
But I maintain my point (despite your vulgarity about my mom) ...A pavane is a dance, and Ravel s indication is a 1\4=54 not 2 times slower allmost. I sugest you listen to Ormandy for example...
very well done! I've never heard the piece at this meter... beautiful. It's as if you can watch every long tear fall... though I do wish you could hear the harp a bit more...
Oh my gosh, this is one of my favorite songs ever. I love the sound of the French horn and that is just a beautiful solo. He does a magnificent job of putting emotion into it. I love it!
@Phlegasus , seeing as this is performed in the Notre Dame they are probably either well-known and don't want to be recognised or they are blind people. =/
Man I've been looking forever for this. I played this back in '96 in my junior high school band. I've always thought this as one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever played, well this and Salvation is Created. Both equally as moving.

You can find this on cd - Pops In Love. Which also includes Faure's Pavane, also well-known and beautiful. Incidently, Ravel studied under Faure. I think Ravels Pavane was written, in part, to impress his teacher.

@egonsky You do know it's NOT two times slower. This is a perfectly reasonable tempo.

@egonsky I fucking love this tempo, especially when I'm fucking your mom.

@Phlegasus: Vampires like orchestrated Ravel very very much. Also red iris would scare the orchestra away. And we vampires don't want that. =)
To be honest, I think only the angle and distance from camera make these glasses appear to be sunglasses.
