I know a gentleman who was overcharged for a doctors visit at his local hospital but, is afraid to speak up about it because word might get out in the hospital that he is a trouble maker. Then someday if he has to go back for surgery, he might not make it out alive. This is pure insanity because there are many people in this world who admit they are afraid of authority figures.
It just embarrasses me to personally know people like this.
i especially like your last comment! deciding on what you can change first, and what it is you did that somehow led this person to believe they can treat you like that.
I have tried staying silent in the last 2 weeks and have averted many blowups! A short time later my difficult person comes to me to explain where they went wrong and how sorry they are for their behaviour.....somewhat satisfying, and it worked out...which is good of course. What a job though....but is for the best and does work.

So nice to see there are smart adults in the world to teach us not-so-smart adults.

I was looking for this. I couldn't put it in words..."When to speak up, when to stay silent"
