  • tyrrell are now mercedes gp

  • how the hell did they get a camera up there..

  • What a rush, beautiful footage! thank you for posting.

  • What dumbass said "they know a crash won't hurt them today"?

  • Better Monaco circuit back then

  • Fantastic footage...simply breathtaking view of the man at work.

  • thx for sharing this vid with us :)

  • He drove without the bodywork! Do that today and the car won't move, let alone go around the track at high speed!

  • Thank you for upload^-^!!! That is good film & beautiful.

  • When drivers were men drivers today they know a crash won't hurt them and today design is banned IMHO the new FF1 is crap to many stupid rules

  • Loving the oversteer coming out of the hairpin!

  • Same map as in NFS Porsche Unleashed...

  • that car seems to have so much more grip beause of the extra tires

  • That helicopter did a good job of keeping up with the aerial view!!

  • @0000kris0000 its the view from the spoiler stupid asshole

  • @gt5profan What... really? I ACTUALLY thought there was a helicopter keeping up with the car perfectly behind it, at the same speed, even exactly in line with the car. Im such a noob haha.

No, but seriously, did you ACTUALLY think that my first comment was serious?

  • @0000kris0000 ok sorry for the asshole but that moment i was pisted of (oww what crap english )

  • I cant believe how small that car is compared to todays F1 cars, it doesnt look much bigger than a go kart!!

  • good God, this car doesnt have any safety features. you hit the wall at 100mph with this and u are screwed beyond recognition

  • Who is this idiot and why isnt Pretty Schumi in this video? Who cares about other drivers, only Schumi matters

  • All of the cars in f1 look the same now

  • @thenascarguy24 same with indy cars

  • All the cars in formula 1 look the now.

  • There is a brilliant feature on this car in this months issue of Motorsport. It says that the guy driving here loved it, but one of the others, Scheckter i think it was, absolutely hated it.

  • My god, what a video and WHAT A CAR!! The noise it makes is spine tingling

  • F1 seriously needs to go back to full manual gearboxes so drivers can make mistakes, it would solve a lot of the overtaking problems. With computers doing all the work mistakes are barely made no wonder it's a procession at most circuits.

  • @Harp00nX

True. Drivers could show their real abilities. Than rally car exxpierence could help Kubica become a World Champion!

  • R.I.P.

  • splendido.

  • Goes to show that the bodywork that normally would surround the driver only offered a false sense of security at best. These drivers from the beginning all the way up to the early '90's were truly the bravest there ever were. I'm just amazed that Depailler was driving here totally exposed, but he was actually going at a pretty good clip!

  • it looked to me that it was (icy handeling) in the corners..its a very cool looking car and i actually own a model of the p34 but there were more reasons against it..id think it would do better on a high speed course with less turns..still a very interesting look at soimething differnt..i wish i was downloadable in f12010 that would be cool!

  • So, does it work better than the 4 wheel car? Is it overly biased toward the steering angle vs the rear wheel direction?

  • I love Tyrrel P34, i could seei in jarama, spain, it's the best f1 car i've seen.

  • A very good Concept!

  • awesome car! i was prolly like 1 year old when it was raced lol. read the story about it. kinda suks goodyear didnt wanna continue to make tires for it. 1 of a kinda car to me

  • HOLY SHIT! The 1970s were just completely a different world to modern Formula One. Had Depallier crashed, he almost certainly would've died judging from the overhead view. So much of him is exposed, and that Tyrell was sliding about like mad as well.

What's staggering as well though, (apart from the obvious 6 wheels), is the fact he's braking with his right foot, + applying the clutch with his left to change gear to change gear like an ordinary road car!

    In FORMULA ONE!!!!!

    Insane!!!!!

  • I like hearing how the 3 liter V8 responds, and it sounds great on the overrun.

  • awsome vid

  • Would the FIA ever allow this today? I'd LOVE to see Mansell, Prost or Schumacher driving a Williams or Ferrari with an overhead camera.

  • where they put the onboard camera ??

  • @ferrari1345 It's mounted on a small tower just behind the driver's head. They didn't use it during the race as it was a danger to other drivers. The smaller ones mounted in a cone didn't come around for another couple of years.

  • doesnt understeer more than others f1 cars of this time?

  • it looks like a kart with 6 wheels

  • Looks like massive understeer, sure sounds good though.

  • When sex was safe and racing was unsafe...

  • @SportSuperBigblock LOL! So true

  • Habia que manejar ste auto!!

  • Viva la power under steer!

  • 4WS on forward is not optimal solution. infact tyrrel project is...failed.

  • @markesajanus it was good in the 1st year they won races but in the 2nd the goodyear didn't give them good tyres for the little 4 wheels

  • those were the days in racing... nowdays people are just afraid of the new shit that comes out, as each F1 team copies each other... boring

  • back when men were men and f1 cars were beasts. glory days.

  • Yup. Especially here as he has no cockpit cowling on :D

  • Incredible!!!! Inches away from death and he didn't even flicker about it! =).

This shows that when it comes to motorsport, the British is the genius nation. Want to build a winning team, come to the United KIngdom of Great Britain and we will give you the know-how, that is why Proton bought Lotus. Lotus is THE specialists (its not a company) to build a winning car.

  • @LoveShock2 Brooklands is paved in concrete and is in England.

  • @LoveShock2 IF you delve deeper into the history books of motorsport even further that Brooklands as you would find is the FIRST purpose built motor racing track that has been paved with conctete. Indianapolis was paved in wood before bricks took their place. Brooklands, even though it wasn't all that sucessful (after the war it has never been used for motorsport again) is the prototype that led to all circuits around the world, including the 'ring.

  • F1 drivers back then had balls. MASSIVE ONES!!!

  • this isnt F1... this looks like a Kart on steroids

  • that cam over the driver and the car without the top body on makes the best onboard cam ever!!!

  • talk about understeer...

  • for some reason this reminds me of the Mazda 787b that won le mans in 91 and was banned. why didnt this design catch on?

  • A) Because it is technologically advanced and intuitive, and the FIA hates that sort of stuff.

    B) Because it was too expensive for Tyrell to keep funding Goodyear to make the smaller front wheels.

  • Apparently he is driving without the bodywork of the car. You can see his feet as he changes gears and drives. Amazing footage, amazing cars, amazing driver. I love all his onboards.

  • @tifosaurus speechless that was awesome

  • @tifosaurus Actually he's driving without the body, because if you look the tird video of the column you can't see his arms out of the car :)

  • this race track is in gran t

  • This is Monaco in Monte Carlo, probably the most famous circuit of all time.

  • as long as you dont count indianapolis

  • Errrr.... you got a point, that is unless you live outside the USA (that means the rest of the world) then Monte Carlo is indeed "probably" the most famous circuit of all time. Other candidates for "the most famous circuit of all time" award would be Monza, Spa and (my favorite) the old Nurburgring

  • Le Mans

  • Very good candidate too

  • Don't forget Le Sarthe and Brooklands! :)

  • amazing the way ya can see that he corrects the slides at every throtle point , that s real driving ,not the playboys nowadays , rip patrick , cheers from brasil

  • was this the year he won monte carlo? i remember him winning at some point in his career

  • no, this film was in 1977, and he won the race the following year

  • There seems to be a lot of initial understeer which he later in turns converts to oversteer with heavy throttle. Looked great to watch.

  • Super - I want all current F1 cars to have this type of overhead camera angle - would be fab. The 360deg view that some American series have would be a step forward too......

  • RIP Patrick

  • he is not very smooth on the throttle is he?

  • I'm guessing the primitive onboard camera setup they're running probably affected the balance of the car...that overhead shot would have taken a pretty tall rig.

  • No joke! Just imagine seeing that rig coming from a distance.

"My god! Is that a sailboat coming around massenet? Nope, just Depailler with a camera."

  • 6 wheel Tyrrell P34 is ugly but the f1 cars from 80is are most beautifol f1 cars of all time.

  • his arms seem explosed..was this the 'regular' car he used in the race???

  • regular car minus upper bodywork.

  • imeant exposed.. not explosed..hehe

  • EPIC

  • WTF!!!

This is a very nice car design.

    I love the 6 wheel Tyrrell P34 :)

  • blech. I could name a ton of better looking designs. Ugly is ugly.

  • I like the formula 1 cars of the seventies because they are so ugly.

  • fast is fast

  • Try again, this is the Monaco F1 course in Monaco (which is a tiny country on the French border).

  • Actually, this is the Cote d'Azur circuit, not the Cote de Ivore, but yes, it is also Monaco.

  • ROTFL

you're serious? how can one say "cote de ivore" instead of "cote d'azure"?

  • Dude, for your own information, and without any offense, the Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) is a country in West Africa which used to be a French colony. The Côte d'Azur is a French county lining over the Mediterranean Sea, close to the French/Italian border.

  • You dont sound like your joking...

  • Yes... Looks like I touched his little ego, but he's trying to hide it behind some "fake humour". Pathetic.

  • at points i thought he was going to touch the barrier withh his arms

  • Tyrrell P34 = ! OMG !

    it's amazing F1 car

  • Great!!! excelent footage of the p34 and Patrick

  • i love this vid because u can see depailler's feet working the pedals which is something we never see today in F1

  • I have this whole show on tape. Its called lap of the gods, lots of great on board video.

  • Wow!!

    That was then!!

    Real cars, real drivers!!

  • Thankyou for keeping this awesome video!

    A real classic!

Only we that enjoy F1 know what it means!

    Beautiful filming angle!

That was Tecnology and real driving skill!

    Congratulations!

  • Wheres the chassis???

It doesnt look safe..looks so exposed, the front and the back..

    Whats that all about?

  • There is just missing a small piece of aluminum, which normally surrounded the driver, but which granted not much of additional security. At this time glass fibre and monococks were unknown.

So it doesnt look safe and it wasn't safe at all. In early 1970s F1 racing was more risky than ever before or at later times. Every season one or two of the drivers died.

  • With very few exceptions all drivers have had "monococks" since the beginnings of F1.

  • lmfao

  • Understeer may be due to the complicated suspension system because of the four front tires.

  • Good Year decided not to develop more front tires for the P34, that was the mistake. Small wheels gave the car less air resistance and more grip.

  • if senna was the best of his era at monaco then patrick was the best in his

  • Understeers quite badly on some corners actually...must be due to lack of negative camber on the front end and four wheels adding lots of surface area 'slide'.

  • he was taking it quite easy really..the four wheel front end looks interesting...a bit like a go-kart on steroids.

  • che cagata

  • Look at the understeer even with 4 front wheels.

  • yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    thanks patrick ;)

  • I love this car and I love Patrick. See his hands always putting the car in the way. Every lap was a hard work. We miss you Patrick.

  • The best F1 car?! My fave. Cars life cut short because of tyre development. Shame.

  • highly unusual to have alot of the bodywork off, i suppose they had to to fit the cameras in, great to see patrick's masterful double clutching on the downshifts!

  • Seems the point of the four wheels is to double the contact patch and in theory increase x2 the cornering grip with no increase in front downforce and very little increase in drag. I miss the days of trial and error, far more interesting and creative.

  • Looks very fast.

  • Bodywork was removed to fit the cameras on.

Never the less carbon fibre was not introduced back then. It's 1977, carbon fibre came 1983 or so.

The 4 front wheels had mainly aerodynamic reasons to keep the profile low but where hard to setup right and even more to keep the setup like it was. Very sensitive stuff there

March had a 4 rear wheel car which Williams improved in the 80ies but were not allowed to run

  • Ah forgot, F1 racing magazine asked Williams designer Sam Michaels to draw the ultime F1 car possible without any rules

It had 4 rears like they had planned in 1982 and ground effect

The car should've been capable of 10G which would have required the drivers to wear jet-fighter pilot suits to keep the blood in the whole body

  • look at this car..no safety...no safety systems ..

  • Watch a formula-1 car from 1950s! That hasn't safety.

  • Awesome, kind of reminds me of driving a shifter cart, out in the open with no protection, Right???

  • Of course F1 cars were less safe 30 years ago, but this one was obviously rigged up with cameras (you can see one on the nose) and the upper part of the body was removed so you can see the driver's actions. Google Tyrrell P34 to see how the car looked like in race configuration.

  • sure, but not carbon fiber in old ones,no Zylon at old ones,,,and that means safety, not only ergonomics.Safety is most important difference between old and new F1 cars.

With this old tyrrel the frontal impact of Kubica at Gilles villeneuve circuit,In that case he was dead in tyrrel, and that is not only ergonomics I think.

  • Dude, 4 front wheels and it still slides into the turns. Um, subtract 2 and make the nose wing more efficient. There's no protection, he's practically sitting atop the car!

  • they've just removed the body work so that you can see everything

  • No matter how many wheels a car has, its always going to slide at those speeds...

  • Dude, the whole point of having 4 wheels was that they were all of a smaller size, and therefore created less drag whilst producing the same grip. The reason this car is sliding a lot is that the bodywork is removed for this demonstration filmed run, and it was an out lap so the tyres were cold anyway.

  • What a funny looking car it was!

  • I love the old chicane after the tunnel. Not the fucking shit stopper they have now.

  • ya the old chicane was great but know like you said its just shitty

  • one of my favourite cars i was lucky and got a front tire from this car

  • I was luky enough to see this car run at Long Beach G.P. in 1982.....oh my gosh, to see this car comming off ocean Blvd. and dropping off to the lower inner loop of the corse getting "air" was amazing!!!!! nice vid thanks to the sender> bellxl

  • nice

  • this is f1 racing as it should be

no traction control and stuff like that

  • What a view!!!

  • did it have 6 speeds? it looked as if it only had 5, or unless he started his car in 2nd gear.

  • Very dangerous that F1 era.

It was the real challenge. Not like now, with the TC and automatic Shifting, now is a shit, not really "human driving",today the car makes everythig.

  • No offense, but this is nonsense. Niki Lauda also claimed that todays F1 cars can be driven by monkeys. Unfortunately for him, when he tried to prove his point, he could not complete a single lap. Sure, coordination between hands and legs is a skill long gone, but driving a F1 car today is at least as challenging as it was 50 years ago.

  • Highly unlikely that Lauda 'could not complete a single lap'. Where the hell did you get that from?

  • I'm sorry it should have been "could not complete a single competitive lap", in that it was 20 seconds slower than his drivers (after he spun the car a few times) - a time good enough for GT cars on that circuit, maybe, but not for F1 cars. He also admitted that the F1 cars he drove in GPs had more grip than the current ones.

  • I think Nikki also said that"even monkeys could drive this new f1 cars"...(with drives aids and stuff) :)

  • no automatic shiftings nowadays

  • Well,I refer today the pilot can shift with the 2 hands on steering wheel,,,and old ones had to turn a lot of curves with only one hand on steerin wheel, and in a old F1 car,was very very very dangerous and difficult.

  • that's a matter of ergonomics, not safety.

as the sport has progressed, so have the methods :/

yes, in the past f1 racing was very difficult and exciting, but today it's still difficult and exciting, just not as dangerous

  • I think they took the body work off so Patrick could see what all those wheels were doing LOL

  • Flimsy looking car, fabulous clip!

  • I wonder how eager the drivers were to kiss the barriers with their front wheels in those days. My guess is they would try their best to avoid or pay the price :)

  • MAN! Just look at his arms! Theres no cockpit at all! I guess they has removed it because of this footage.

  • Yes, they took the bodywork off to show Patrick's movements while driving.

  • where did they put the camera at the beginning??

  • On a sort of tripod atop the rear wing. Obviously they couldn't race it like this.

  • just listen to that engine . . . and no flappy-paddle gearshift like todays space age cars. those were the days :)

  • Excellent clip!
