I think that it hit the concrete right at the edge, where it's sharp. Also, I believe that the BPA free bottles are less durable, but they're worth it because they're healthier to use.

Hmm, I've done worse to mine and it didn't break. Seriously, I dropped it off a 100-ft cliff, although it maybe was slowed down by all the ledges it bounced off on the way.

Precisely adding water into the Nalgene bottle and throw it down is the only way to break the bottle.

I've asked my sister to throw down the bottle with water for me once, from the 2nd level. I missed the catch and it broke.

um there is several other ways to break it: filling with dry ice or any high explosives, shooting it with any high caliber gun,sledge hammer if your strong, etc.

not anymore. now, they use Tritan copolyester that doesn't contain bpa (which was SUPPOSEDLY linked to cancer by the state of california...) The old Nalgene bottles didn't cause cancer unless you heated up the bottle above 2000 degrees...

Destroy it, don't use it. Nalgene bottles have a carcinogenic chemical, bisphenol A (#7 on the bottom). Bisphenol A causes cancer. Patgonia has pulled these recently as has Coast Mountain Sports in Canada.
