  • I'd say the guy singing this song wouldn't be fucking smiling if he were to go over the top. War is tragic and profitable.

  • this video/music just makes me want to ask them if they were having a bully day? that or box a kickboxing kangeroo

  • at 3:13 was that the grande mine were they used 25tons of explosions?

  • @v8109 Its the blowing of the Hawthorn mine, signaling the start of the Battle of the Somme filmed by Geoffrey Malins.

  • Nice video mate! The joy of the somme war was great. The war was so insignifficant. Only a few people died.

  • In my opinion to much effort has gone into defending the French. Before the 'Great War' became such, the Germans should have been 'left' to occupy the continent. That 'novelty' would have warn off in the course of time. The Second World War came about from the harshness of the Treaty of Versailles - Fwench vengeance and the Yanks bringing negroes into the Rhineland. Both phenomena led to a nation putting its trust in bully boys ; sexual deviants ; and soul-less creeps exampled by Goebbels.

  • I can't believe the stupidity and ignorance you have shown. You clearly do not know much more about the origins of world war two than my pet fish. Idiot.

  • @1986emj it is usually neo-liberalism that leads to wars

  • I am reading Peter Harts Somme:The Darkest Hour on the Western Front. A well worth the while to read. I suggest to anyone who loves the history of the Somme to pick up the book.

  • what was that tank brigade song called?

  • The tanks that broke the ranks by Fanning and Fortune.

  • damn!!!!!!!!!!godbye rodshild!!!!

  • utter madness,,imagine being born just to end up dying in this way as a nobody ....the fuckers who organise the slaughter are alway safely away from the action, i guess that the way its always been..and always will be,,there will always be idiots who want to join armies instead of staying home with their families,,one life ,,you dont get another one,,dont give it to fuckers like stalin or hiltler,,or bush or any leaders thats been agressive to start wars,,no soldiers ,,no wars,,simple,,

  • I think we can classify Douglas Haig as not better than all the other madmen of history.. An insane butcher. He sent hundreds of thousands of young men to their deaths.

  • totally agree,,

  • I used to participate in a WW1 forum, Greatwar forum, and voiced these opinions and was banned for this. The old boy network from the upper class still defend this mad butcher as being a great soldier. What guff.

  • you do realize that a lot of the casualties in the second world war didnt give their lives away to fuckers like stalin and hitler, they were drafted meaning they had to fight, especially in russia. and how can you call them idiots, the soldiers who volunteered in both world wars, particularly the first world war, had no idea what the conditions were like until years into the fighting, and by that time the government had began the conscription on civilians, again having no choice but to fight

  • yes, i do realize,,havent you heard of the word,,no,,i wont murder for you,,the word rebellion,,the word peace first and foremost,,power is in numbers,,the governments of the should have been overthrown for pursuing war,,listen to what harry patch had to say about it,,incidentally radio head have just released a song called harry m

patch in memory of him and those that were slaughter like pieces of meat,,i respect first and foremost life,,human life ,,all life,,the right to live..

  • on the WW1 : 2 millions german died ,1,4 french, 0.7 english soldiers and 0.1 american soldiers...damn

  • i think the russians had like more than 10million casualties. in total its like35- 40 million deaths

  • russian had twentyfive millon deaths in ww2,,compare that to six millon jews,,in total 65 millon died in the second world war.russian having the biggest losses,,everyone craps on about d day,,the red army bore the brunt of the hardened german forces,,

  • damn...thats because the russian army armed their citizens with not so good weapons during the german invasion...that is terrible 25 million deaths. lets just pray WW3 never occurs.just like einstein said.."ww3 will be fought with unimaginable WMD's, but WW4 will be fought with sticks and stones.."

  • It does not matter as to numbers. Each life was unique. A young man sent off as kannon fodder whild drunk old generals sat in comfort and swilled their booze and lied to the public.

Haig, Joffre,Von Valkenhyn and other kriminals.

  • the germans used to say that the British troops were lions led by donkeys, i think no other battle portrays this fact than the Somme.

  • thats a quotation of napoleon, but anyways, your right

  • oh right my mistake cheers pal

  • in one days bombardment they used more shells than the whole US civil war! that must have been complete hell!

  • jp morgan's war.

  • Absolutely terrible!

I'm reading Sir Philip Gibb's "now it can be told" and looking for visuals.... Amazing, amazing, how reading, I can see that man hasn't changed even though our technology has. My heart breaks for the suffering. Inadequate clothing, shelter, food, medicine...

    Thank-you for posting this footage.

  • Verdun thats it

  • The First Battle of the Somme remains the most hideous and aweful episode in the history of warfare. It lasted from July 1st to mid-November 1916. Conservative estimates are that 1,200,000 British and German soldiers died there, some historians say it was closer to a million and a half. In addition to machine guns and massive artillery assaults, thousands of tons of poison gas was used---mustard, chlorine and phosgeen gas---that caused an agonizing slow death to its victims. It was hell on Earth

  • k why type this in lol

  • "The First Battle of the Somme remains the most hideous and aweful episode in the history of warfare."

By the number of deaths no

  • what is then?

  • some french campain a forget, i think 2million french died and about 1 million germans

  • Comment removed

  • 420,000 british casualties

    200,000 french casualties

    500,000 german casualties

i without a doubt agree with you

  • A tin badge for a good soldier,

    A wooden cross for another,

A place in heaven for all my soldiers,

And a corner of hell for your masters.

  • homes fit for soldiers soldiers fit for homes where did all the flowers go war is hell there can be no winners wnen the whole world witnessed many nations finest slaughted for what afew miles of nothing .

  • not quite for nothing, the french were fighting for their homeland, the british were helping the french and the belgians. if the german general staff hadn't violated belgian neutrality then the brits would have stayed out of the war and the germans could have beaten the french.

  • no, britain would of come in, knowing how strong germany was, so she knew it be a good chance to strike germany and her allies while they are still on a 2 front war.

  • "Tank's - British navy sailing on the land"

1st time we used a tank, bet they s**t them selfs when they saw them coming over the gerry tranches.

Serously though 1000's killed , whole villages wiped out (pal's).

again you have provided a great video and again great editing.

    Thanks

  • one of those best of British moments the first tanks rolling accross the battlefield "ave some of that gerry"

  • Best of British. Offically 100,000 Brits died in the Somme (so add another 30,000 to that), 50,000 French and 160,000 Germans.
