this is a high school production. like all high schools, the'yre going to have limited resources. my school is doing this, only amansaro is black. if it were a professional production, then yes, black actors for aida, mereb, and nehebka are expected, but this isnt professional. on another note, i was disapointed with the dancing. for a highly emotional piece like this, i feel they should have tried to included more than 5 people, even if they cant dance, just my opinion
My high school is putting on Aida for the next two weeks and we are all sooo white! But we solved the problem by getting the whole cast spray tans. :)
Can people stop obsessing over the races of the cast??? It honestly doesn't matter. And the story doesn't center around a white man falling in love with a black woman!!! It is about Aida, a slave from the enemy country and Radames, the leader of Egypt falling in love. Bottom line: it's about a forbidden love. The cast was great!
well, when you know you do not have to mean's to at least cast your named character's correctly..then you should think of doing another show. the story loses it's depth and meaning..with a white AIDA, Nehebka..Mareb ..i will not comment on the ensemble..that i believe can be mixed. ..
Most schools that produce big musicals such as that one do not have many black people audition (if you're black and born in America, you are NOT African American).
My school, however, has a very mixed population and our Mereb, Nehebka, Amonasro, and AIDA are all black with a good amount of black chorus members as well as white!
I know what pikablu was trying to say, but how about we're all just American and leave it at that? Black (nowadays) is a broad generalization that encompasses west indians and other subcultures as well. The term "Black" would not have existed if slaves were not transported to the Americas anyway in my opinion but that's a whole 'nother thing altogether.
right, what i said and that are completely the same thing.
maybe a school should analyze why it has no black students before it should consider putting on a play that is traditionally centered around african-american vocal styles
Second I don't know of any school that has all Egyptian student's in it and that is a key point in this musical
last this musical was not written based on African American Vocal's
This was a pop musical!
Go find a high school that has Egyptian student's in there Aida production and then your comments might have some truth behind them, until then stop posting stupid comments
General was saying that if ALL you have is white people, then don't pick a musical in which the story line CENTERS around a white man falling for a black slave.
actually this isn't about whites and blacks at all. If you actually did a little research, you'd realize that this is a rendition of Romeo and Juliette. So if you're saying that this musical is a racial movement, you're saying that shakespeare was the motivator of it all. This cast is brilliant, and if you have a problem with all white people doing a show, get real. Look at showboat, ragtime, or any other "old" musical. They MOSTLY deal with racism in one way or another. Do your research.
Romeo and Juliet IS about racism yeah duh, everyone knows that and its obvious that it is a rendition of Romeo and Juliet. But i HAVE done my research I was IN Aida and this musical has GIVEN CIRCUMSTANCES. For example the plot revolves around a black slave falling for a white captain. I win.
the captain isn't white, hes egyptian. just because adam pascal is white and the original aida was black doesnt mean that every cast has to be exactly the same. that's what live theatre is, a variety.
scoobyboi84, our has egyptians in it bcuze its that diverse. our school is the 3rd best school in the US, Suncoast high School. i agree that the theme of the musical is better demonstrated when the Aida is black. our Aida and Nehebka was black and they sing really well. all the nubians in our Aida was also black. all u see in our dance of the robe is black ppl bcuze we tried to stick to the theme of the play. dont get the wrong idea. there are alot of races in our aida.
The Aida was good for a high school aged cast. this performance just lacks some serious conviction.... and good dance moves.... and rythem.... and passion.... uh, it's just lacking altogether.
its a group of white people what u expect u know they aint got no damn rythem and she cant sing 4 shit go look at my videos and see this same song and how my friends at Crete monee highschool SNAPPED THE FUCK OUT
im really sorry but...this is terrible! i just finished a production of Aida at my school and, honestly, we look like broadway material compared to this...
it lacks a lot of energy, the singings pretty good though. And what are people talking about? 'Their suppossed to be Nubian?' I'd like to see them try to find people of different races interested in young theater school, that is probrablt located in the suburbs. HA!!
Actually, you can find black people in an prodominately white community. my school did. Also, why in the world would this school pick a play with a black cast, knowing they wouldn't have any black people. Not having a nubian class takes away from the overall purpose of the play.
My school, did Aida, and there was not one black person in the whole production. We picked the play becasue of the amazing story, and music. Usually, that's what you chose a play based on. What does it matter if there are no black people? If you can act, you can pull it off!! Go to 'Milford Aida' and see!
It matters. The play is made to show that through it all, whether BLACK or WHITE, we are all made by God and it also gives african-americans a chance to believe that one day, there will NOT be segregation, discrimination, and "hateration."
Of course if you can act, you can pull it off. But if there are NO BLACKS the play is not as effective as it should be>>>
Ok. In the play there is a NUBIAN cast, which sings Dance of the Robe and THe Gods Love Nubia. How and the world do you do a play without the nubian cast???
Having put on this performance at our HS, the lack of "choreographic energy" in this number was disappointing. Like lacaear said, its an important point in the musical...im sure the ensemble could have handled it.
wtf...who was high on PCP when they choreographed this, the singing is good, and apart from empty stares form the chorus, the dancing was the only absolutely horrible thing, next time, try gettin the entire chorus involved, and make it more exciting, this song is suposed to blow the crowd away with the dancing and singing, not make them want to play air hockey with their face
um... just to let you know, our Aida had no voice during hell week. As a member of the run crew I'd know. she was bloody amazing during the performances and said nothing during that week so that she could do what she could. IDK if you can reach those notes but i know i sure as hell can't.
yea I definitely know how that is. because when I played Aida last year, I had no voice the last week either. they didn't ALLOW me to talk at all. at home, at school, nothing. it's mad work and props to anyone that plays the part. just for the record, I can reach those. =]
ok..i love the one who played AIda..but really even though she CAN sing..this play needs a "black" Aida. I mean that's what its based on and sosmetimes u need the black sprit and soul in all the song Aida sings.I'm not being mean its just the truth
I understand what you mean, but I was in this show, and our high school has literally about 15 black people out of about 1900 people. And none of them were in the theatre program when we did this production... If this were a college show, it'd probably be a lot easier to find a black Aida, but with about 100 people to choose from, you don't really find much.
actually it's not based on a black aida, not all nubians were black, they just had darker skin, which she clearly has in the show. the only reason people think aida should be black is because heather headley played her in the original cast, but it's not necessary. This is also an extremely white suburban high school, with literally 3 black people, go yell at black people to come move to Fairport if you want to see a black Aida.
Well, not even black just a darker person. I am currently in Aida, our Aida looks almost greek, quite egyptian actually, her voice is deep like the original broadway character.
If you're commenting on the shadowy players in the background - that's th intended effect. And By the way, I really loved it. Amazing lighting effect.
yeah, your aida sings really well. and the chorus (which makes or breaks the song) also sounds very good. i also love the drumming on stage, we were going to do that, but then our director decided not to.
This song is incredible and the voices are also incredible I just wish I felt more of the urgency in the song...I didn't think the acting was as if the stakes were very high but again, the voices are amazing!
The Aida is awesome, but the choreography is poooooor. Its like dance was an after-though for this director. There is so much to be desired in this number as far as physicality.
For all of you saying how "high school" this show is... yes... it is a HIGH SCHOOL production... get over it. And as for "too much standing around"... that is not their fault. They only have what they're told to do... That is the director's problem.
OMG....this is horrible...you guys are too proper...whats up with the slave costumes...why is everyone just standin around...no one is feelin the song but AIDA!!!! sorry and the dancin looked like you'll were stretchin....or a 3 yr. old made it up...i feel bad for AIDA...you guys must not want her to help ya'll!!!!

my goodness!!!!!! i got goosebumps..and being an all white cast does not take away anything from the beautiful script. I'm an african american woman and I feel the girl casted as Aida was wonderful!!!
I don't have to say anything -- this is "the critic" but if you don't like my comments its a wonderful thing because you could never handle the real world -- it would have taken you guys a month and a half just to get through act one if it were my cast -- I appreciate you holding back on the high not really tho...it's better than a shrill
I must be COMPLETELY and brutally honest. I go to one of the top high schools in my county when it comes to singing and our musicals, and...I'm speechless. That was AMAZING!!! I thought I was watching a Broadway production (you sounded like the Original Broadway Cast). You all should be PROUD of what you did. I'd say more, but I'm keeping my review under a PG-13 rating. AMAZING job you all!!!
I wouldn't give them THAT much credit. She hit the wrong note in the last part of the song and the music drownded out her singing. But for what it was worth, it was great. Wouldv'e been proud if Aida was MY daughter in the play.
Love the singing and it's pretty well done for a high school production but the blocking and choreography were a bit lacking. And as for a white cast...most broadway shows are typically casted blindly unless it's a time period piece but in this case, it can work either way. It depends more on the thespians then skin tone.
Loved, loved, loved Aida's voice! Didn't really care for the choreography, and the robe was kinda gross lol, and I don't know if i would have put on aida without at least one black person... i guess it works in a place without black people, but it does feel like it's lacking something... Kind of like a white coalhouse in ragtime, or a black nellie in South pacific... it can still sound and look good, but it does feel a little off.
niiiice! My sister and I would dance to this song on the soundtrack all the time when we were younger. My last musical at my school was Wizard of Oz...God we sucked on out first one. (MY PANTS FELL DOWN...i was scarecrow) The second on was better. Yours is so well put together! I hope i get better within the years
I have to give your Nehebeka credit for putting her own spin on it. Very interesting choreography (pardon if mispelled). Good overall. Do you have not me?
unfortunately we don't have 17 extremely talented black people at our school. we don't even have 17 black people in general. our high school isn't very diverse, but that's a dumb reason for us not to do the show.
I completely agree. And I think your Aida did a fantastic job despite it! Such a rich, soulful voice. I definitely never expected that voice to come out of her. FANTABULOUS cast overall!!!
y was it so rushed.????

My old high school did Aida and Aida was white...the story was still told beautifully and she sang it beautifully as well.

She is a talented performer and she has a rich sound. I just don't think her voice was meant for the part of Aida.

I completely agree. And I think your Aida did a fantastic job despite it! Such a rich, soulful voice. I definitely never expected that voice to come out of her. FANTABULOUS cast overall!!!
