I was born and raised in buffalo and moved to missouri, so people are all, "haha, you have an accent" so of course i say "I don't have an -aayckcent-!"
Ive been born and raised in Buffalo. I have been living in North Carolina for 11 years. I've been gone long enough to hear the accent. Its really funny to hear someone with a Buffalo Accent charactorize a Buffalo Accent(no offense 2 you sir) You put a cartoonish emphizisis spin on you already thich accent. Being a Truck Driver I hear lots of accents. My dad(living in West Seneca) has a strong accent. if you want to hear the accent of the area you're in, Listen 2 a Car dealership ad on the radio
God the Buffalonian accent is just awful (so are neighboring accents i.e. Rochester). It makes the guys sound like absolute fembods. I can say all this because I'm from Upstate New York too (but grew up around Brooklynites, thank God, so I don't suffer the same vocal defect).
I've lived in Buffalo my whole life and I've never heard people talk like that. no one I know talks with a nasally sound. sure we accentuate our 'ah' sounds, but its not that obnoxious. You didnt make those nasally sounds when you were talking normally and you said you come from Buffalo.
Maybe a better way to show our accent is to say something with a different accent, like in proper english, meaning no dialect stressing, and then say it in our version of normal and explain it.
It's called the northern cities vowel shift. Basically any city or town that's on the great lakes has the accent, sans the UP and Minnesota. They sound more like the people in Fargo. I am from West Michigan, and he sounds like a West Michigander.
I moved from Tennesse to Buffalo for two years. I am now back in TN LOL The Buffalo accent is a blending accent of New York, Canada, and the Mid West. The ending of the words are stressed. Example CAR becomes "Ca-RRRR"
This is true haha. It is a northern accent like Canada or minnisota. You forgot how sometimes we say there more then needed haha, "Hey you guys going there to get some beer and donuts there at the store there"
yeah, there is some i left out. I could also talk about the way we put things into possesives. like "i'm going to am&a's to get some clothes." or something close to that ha.
haha yes, you described the accent perfectly! I moved here from Albany, and I didn't notice it at first, but now its starting to annoy me, a little =p. I'm glad you addressed the "the 90" issue, too. I thought it was really weird when people wouldn't say "I-90" here. There are also other regional differences like saying "pop" instead of "soda" or "sucker" instead of lolipop. This interview with mikey kearns demonstrates the accent well: /watch?v=Qsf9-CGYHXY
yeah i can hear it lol. if you weren't told about the accent, you probably wouldn't notice it. i should have addressed pop vs soda and lollipop vs sucker but my camera was about to die :P
yea haha, its different in different parts of the city too. when words like the, and them sound like da and dem, its most likely the east side because of the polish.

You're right, I think it's a mix between Canadian and Mid-West accents. But then I think its a unique Buffalo thing as well!

I've noticed alot of the Buffalo pronunciations are very similar to "chicahhhgo" accents.

"The 90" is a result of our proximity to Canada, where their highways are "The QEW" and "The 401".
