Indeed, both listening to and watching him play is a delight. If anyone is near to Derbyshire on Feb 3rd 2011, you might like to know Russ is doing a solo gig (only one in the UK this year). Details are:
Old Oak Inn, 176 Main Street, Horsley Woodhouse, Derbyshire, DE7 6AW
Russ is such an imaginative musician, adept guitarist, and fine teacher. It's great to be able to see and hear so much of these traits of his on YouTube. For some perspective, check out the band that he played in 30+ years ago, with John Miller (an amazing guitarist of other styles, and also a great musician and teacher--played some mean bass back then), Lou Martin, Tony Trischka, Peter Wernick, Kenny Kosek and Andy Statman were all playing in the same band!!? (Yes, this band could COOK!)
If Barenberg is the steak, Douglas is the sauce. And if you've heard Douglas, you wanna mix everything with that sauce. He's such an addictive genius (saucemaker).
TransAtlantic Sessions is probably the best unplugged (folk-) session ever.
I wish there more musicians who put so much feeling, tenderness, and, at the same time, energy into their performance. Maybe then there would be some interesting music on the radio.
Maybe not exactly this music, but the three top CD distributors did a survey to bring before Congress of why their sales were down. They wanted to show it ws because of piracy But their survey showed the # reason to be that people thought CD's were overpriced for the quality and # 2 top reason was that they just didn't like the songs on the Cd's.
Some community Radio stations have a higher listening audience than some top 40 stations in the same market.
Yes Jerry's, the man with the SLIDE. I love it when Jerry starts his break and Russ immediately looks away from his guitar to watch Jerry play, he can't help himself he HAS to watch Jerry. I also noticed it seems this is when all the other musicians start groovin' and really getting into the song. Jerry's dobro didn't only add accent, it bumped it up a notch. What makes Jerry the most influential dobro player is, he can play with anybody, anywhere, anytime and never sound out of character.
He's the Da Vinci of the music business. His music is emotional, strong, wild, something to dream to, never boring and versatile. You might not like one song, but there surely is something from or with him what you'll love. So there's always something for everybody.
Great tune by Russ, i really like his playing and what about MR Douglas Heavy on the MR!! he has played with every one, i bet he could jam with AC-DC and fit in and make them sound better also...
I was lucky enough to get lessons with russ barenberg last year. not only is he one of the best melodic players in folk/bluegrass, hes also a very good teacher and one of the most down to earth people around
I've been singing the praises of Russ's playing over 30 years of teaching guitar. Cowboy Calypso is one of my all time favorite albums. I teach solos of Doc Watson, Clarence White, and Tony Rice - but it's the Barenburg approach I preach to students. His playing projects humor and love :-)
Exactly! He's such an incredible musician, guitarist, teacher and human. I first found out about him from his incredible book on Clarence White, but I have all his albums and they're among my favorites. Of all the great Homespun Tapes material, I think Russ's lessons are the best, and the ones I recommend most.
@a46474647 Amen. Amen. Amen. This guy taught me to play guitar. The early years were slow going, never sacrificing tone for speed, but ah... the end result -- not in Russ's league maybe, but my $400 Yamaha (my "outdoor" guitar) hangs with all the Martins. Thanks, Russ. You were right.
For those of you who are fortunate enough to live in Scotland, these guys are touring. They will be playing in Glasglow, Scotland 1/31 and 2/1/2009!!!!
I've gotten to see these three 5 times since 94, and still keep my fingers crossed that they'll do more stuff together. As pure and real as music gets!!
Good news for all fans is the release of the DVD "Transatlantic Sessions: Series 3" bringing together the best of Nashville, Ireland and Scotland to perform what has been called "the greatest backporch shows ever".
All of the six half-hour programmes from the BBC/RTÉ TV series are included, recorded in a beautiful old converted farm steading in the Perthshire Highlands.
Nice! I remember the first time I heard this song. Big stupid grin on my face. Bought the CD immediately. I never get tired of this song. It feels like a car cresting a hill on a curvy road on a sunny day.
; la fuk, si ça donne pas envie de jouer, il vaut mieux apprendre à faire du pain, merci Flux, mi loves to the Bears i now..pourquoi il n'y a que 400 personnes qu' ont vu et entendu çà!!
Amen! What a master. Chet Aktkins smiled!
