  • Amen! What a master. Chet Aktkins smiled!

  • wonderful !!!

  • Holy Crap! Danny Thompson on bass! Unreal!

  • Timeless!!

  • Just great !

  • This is so damn awesome...I don't even know what to say. Awesomesauce. (whatever that means)

  • Beautiful...

  • why cant be this stuff be mainstream music!!!!

  • @on3toughmidg3t This is mainstream music if this is your choice. Whatever your particular choice - this is excellent!

  • can anybody put his song "Our Time" on youtube?

  • Indeed, both listening to and watching him play is a delight. If anyone is near to Derbyshire on Feb 3rd 2011, you might like to know Russ is doing a solo gig (only one in the UK this year). Details are:

Old Oak Inn, 176 Main Street, Horsley Woodhouse, Derbyshire, DE7 6AW

    7.30 p.m.start

    Tickets: £18.00 (space limited)

    Tel: 01335 345675 for tickets

  • Ahh Yeah... Thats a Jam Y'all...

These guys be Cooking up a storm All f***ing Night Long!!

  • Russ is such an imaginative musician, adept guitarist, and fine teacher. It's great to be able to see and hear so much of these traits of his on YouTube. For some perspective, check out the band that he played in 30+ years ago, with John Miller (an amazing guitarist of other styles, and also a great musician and teacher--played some mean bass back then), Lou Martin, Tony Trischka, Peter Wernick, Kenny Kosek and Andy Statman were all playing in the same band!!? (Yes, this band could COOK!)

  • Oh man! How awesome is this.... so much soul!

This is super inspiring stuff, I will try to figure some of this stuff out by ear, capo on 3th fret and normal tuning I suppose?:)

  • Amen to that

  • I listened to it the first time, the 10 times in a row. What a beautiful tune

  • If Barenberg is the steak, Douglas is the sauce. And if you've heard Douglas, you wanna mix everything with that sauce. He's such an addictive genius (saucemaker).

TransAtlantic Sessions is probably the best unplugged (folk-) session ever.

  • @panlemans

Great comments. Barenberg owns that song, but the complement of Russ and Jerry Douglas is phenomenal. I'm going to listen to it yet another time

  • pure class

  • This is great! Honest music with a great feel and calming resonance. Love it.

  • Anyone familiar with an album from the 60s called Area Code 615? Would love to see it posted.

  • @ danlay... Yes it's on Skip, Hop & Wobble

  • Very nice!

  • Totally Amazing! I respect these guys a lot for creating such a quality piece of music...

  • I wish there more musicians who put so much feeling, tenderness, and, at the same time, energy into their performance. Maybe then there would be some interesting music on the radio.

  • Was this on "Skip,Hop & Wobble"??? I've lost it and can't remember.

  • Yep - Just got it from iTunes and it blew me out of my seat. Hooray for Russ Barenberg and the crew!

  • Damn, they are on fire!

  • What's up with the "Embedding disabled by request"?

  • This is the way music should sound. Too bad the commercial radio still doesn't get it what people REALLY want to hear.

Love the close up of the guitar playing

  • @WildBanjoBill Actually commercial radio does play what the people really want to hear, just not what you and i want to hear...

  • Maybe not exactly this music, but the three top CD distributors did a survey to bring before Congress of why their sales were down. They wanted to show it ws because of piracy But their survey showed the # reason to be that people thought CD's were overpriced for the quality and # 2 top reason was that they just didn't like the songs on the Cd's.

Some community Radio stations have a higher listening audience than some top 40 stations in the same market.

  • It's okay, there'll be another folk revival soon enough.

  • Why disable the embedding? Sucks dude.

  • Yes Jerry's, the man with the SLIDE. I love it when Jerry starts his break and Russ immediately looks away from his guitar to watch Jerry play, he can't help himself he HAS to watch Jerry. I also noticed it seems this is when all the other musicians start groovin' and really getting into the song. Jerry's dobro didn't only add accent, it bumped it up a notch. What makes Jerry the most influential dobro player is, he can play with anybody, anywhere, anytime and never sound out of character.

  • He's the Da Vinci of the music business. His music is emotional, strong, wild, something to dream to, never boring and versatile. You might not like one song, but there surely is something from or with him what you'll love. So there's always something for everybody.

  • Just saw you live in Westminster, great show!!!

  • Great stuff. Thanks ;~)

  • i love this!

  • big big moment !

    truly great music :-)))

  • Oooh Great Music..all awesome musicians..I love that Bhodran:-)

  • ... not fogetting the god-like genius of DT on double bass. He's on this year's Transat Sessions as well (see BBC4 over the next few Fridays).

  • God Douglas is the MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Man, that dobro sends shivers down my spine. Just awesome.

  • Great tune by Russ, i really like his playing and what about MR Douglas Heavy on the MR!! he has played with every one, i bet he could jam with AC-DC and fit in and make them sound better also...

  • This has been one of my favorite tunes for several years. Great performance!

  • SICK!!!

  • ...............

  • ...............

  • Danny Thompson!

  • I was lucky enough to get lessons with russ barenberg last year. not only is he one of the best melodic players in folk/bluegrass, hes also a very good teacher and one of the most down to earth people around

  • I've been singing the praises of Russ's playing over 30 years of teaching guitar. Cowboy Calypso is one of my all time favorite albums. I teach solos of Doc Watson, Clarence White, and Tony Rice - but it's the Barenburg approach I preach to students. His playing projects humor and love :-)

  • You can find this one on `skip, hop, and wobble` also. Just in case you don`t have it. Not enough star`s for this one : )

  • That is a GREAT album/CD. Great tones and compositions

  • Exactly! He's such an incredible musician, guitarist, teacher and human. I first found out about him from his incredible book on Clarence White, but I have all his albums and they're among my favorites. Of all the great Homespun Tapes material, I think Russ's lessons are the best, and the ones I recommend most.

  • Good News. Transatlantic Sessions Original Series (Series One) now available on PAL DVD - at long last

  • Outstanding.

  • Amen!

  • Russ in a class of his own. Can I get an Amen?

  • @a46474647 Amen. Amen. Amen. This guy taught me to play guitar. The early years were slow going, never sacrificing tone for speed, but ah... the end result -- not in Russ's league maybe, but my $400 Yamaha (my "outdoor" guitar) hangs with all the Martins. Thanks, Russ. You were right.

  • @a46474647 amen

  • @a46474647 Don't forget Jerry and Danny!

    Masters of the Universe!

  • @a46474647

    Amen.

    Including Tony Rice, of course.

  • @a46474647 no you cant

  • @a46474647 no you cant but you can get a praise allah

  • @a46474647

    Amen!

  • Awsome,so clean i love it

  • *Glasgow. Jerry Douglas AND Russ Barenberg are in! I am looking to see who else in on the bill.

  • For those of you who are fortunate enough to live in Scotland, these guys are touring. They will be playing in Glasglow, Scotland 1/31 and 2/1/2009!!!!

  • This live version, especially the Dobro solo, is even better than the recorded version.

  • Awesome! Amazing feel and so tight!

  • Thanks for sharing this.Amazing talent.

  • My new favourite guitar player. Wonderful.

  • Masters!!!

    Wonderful video!!!

  • Russ Barenberg is the master. I can't get "The Pleasent Beggar" outta my mind.

  • I've gotten to see these three 5 times since 94, and still keep my fingers crossed that they'll do more stuff together. As pure and real as music gets!!

  • Sometimes, but rarely, I hear a piece of music and it sounds perfect. This is one and I feel they all knew it worked really well.

  • grande... me encanta

  • fucking awesome! and the F word IS necessary

  • Great instrumental. I've enjoyed listening to a tape of this tune now and then for the last decade.

  • BRILLIANT...oh to play guitar like that !!

  • one of my fav albums...thanks 4 the vid

    Skip hop and wobble!

  • Good news for all fans is the release of the DVD "Transatlantic Sessions: Series 3" bringing together the best of Nashville, Ireland and Scotland to perform what has been called "the greatest backporch shows ever".

All of the six half-hour programmes from the BBC/RTÉ TV series are included, recorded in a beautiful old converted farm steading in the Perthshire Highlands.

  • Very tastfull,well recorded.thanks...

  • Nice! I remember the first time I heard this song. Big stupid grin on my face. Bought the CD immediately. I never get tired of this song. It feels like a car cresting a hill on a curvy road on a sunny day.

  • I like the way you put this, Check out my stuff when you get a chance!!

  • Fantastic! Thanks.
