  • Josh from the hornlists? I'd say, listen to it yourself and see what you want to change or improve on. Your vibrato is fine. Great trills, and they are so hard to do. Bunch of junior high level comments below. You play at a high level, and I'm not going to critique. You can tell what you want to change. Pickup is in distortion, so it is hard to hear all of your tone. If that is an 8D beast that you are playing, I know they are hard to master. I play on a series C 8D.

  • Over all great job...a few slips, but not bad...good cover up...by supporting your longer passages with plenty of air that would help over all your intonation on the higher notes...What's wrong with vibrato? I don't prefer it in my playing, but listen to some of the Russian horn players! Keep up the great work...Do you play professionally?

  • first of all, vibrato on horn is NEVER good on horn! second, needs work on stopped horn! third and last, OVER-BLOWING!

  • Disagree with your comment about vibrato. Not true at all! Even within an orchestra that is not ture, and certainly not for solo horn. Listen e.g. to Czech horn players Bedrich Tylsar, Zdenek Tylsar or Peter Damm, my fav horn player

  • i didn't mean to insult you but as a horn player i never thought or would think of doing vibrato on horn. i guess it's what you like but i don't like it!

  • lol What shit school of music did you attend? There is so much Horn music that calls for vibrato it's not even funny. The trick is knowing when to use it and how much, but like it or not, vibrato is a big part of horn playing... especially solo work.

  • there is a difference between horn music 'calling for vibrato' and being stupid and doing vibrato...never in my life have i heard a professional hornist do vibrato on horn!

  • You should broaden your genres then, I've seen many professional horn players use vibrato. It has to be done tastefully and subtly unless it's noted other wise. I typically wouldn't add much vibrato to say something like Mozart's concertos, but on much slower paced solos the absence of any kind of vibrato makes a dull a piece of music, but hey if you want sound bland then be my guest...

  • Herman Baumann. Noticeable example.

  • Not a good example at all. Vibrato comes to horn artists about the same time a triple axel comes to an ice skater during their training. It's the last thing they learn. Vibrato is so easy to do poorly. Poorly done vibrato ruins an otherwise great passage and takes away far more than it adds. Baumann is a master and his vibrato is perfectly done as is also true for the others on Raphael's list. Lastly, vibrato is the surest way to lose an audition for any major orchestra.   • Perhaps I took it wrong. You're right, HB's vibrato is wonderful. I've taught for over half a century and my goal was success for my students. Once ALL aspects have been mastered (many years), then build your vibrato. Intonation must be perfected first. Poor vibrato can subtract so much more than it adds.

  • I played this piece in 1987 and wouldn't attempt it now! Didn't listen to it with the music, and yeah there is the odd missed note, imagine that. Very hard piece to play in a recital with other demands too. Overall you get the hunting call sound and what a range it demands. Thought the piano was a bit overpowering, maybe the mics, maybe put the lid to half down. Enjoy your playing very much. John in Canada

  • Good job. But the intonation is not very well some times. I play this piece too now (I'm 15^^) and it's really hard because of the fast notes. I play it with a "Alexander 103 Model" and it sounds really great. Try something like that. ;)

  • My guess is that you've played this a thousand times perfectly in a practice room. It sounds great, and I bet that the couple of flubs I heard were mostly because you were tired. It's not the horn's fault. If you want a new horn, get one, but don't blame the flubs or the Youtube sound on the horn. Any chance of hearing the rest of the recital?

  • I think you are very musical, I can see that your technic is very good too, I don't understand why the bad notes, and I agree with others, you need other horn, maybe a professional holton, there are many with very good soun, and are bigs like conn... anyway, congratulation. bye (excuse me for me english, I speak spanish, I'm colombian)

  • I think this would sound alot better without a Conn 8D. You've got great dynamic contrast and at least fairly good tone (it's hard to tell on the video), but DEFINITELY your horn isn't keeping up it's tone when you get loud. great stopped playing. And I feel like I've got to comment on the trills, too, because those were plenty better than I can do them!

  • Great playing. Very challenging piece to attempt, and even harder to get right. Lord knows i haven't yet. My only comment is about interpretation. I am dazzled by the technical playing, but am left wishing for some emotion. You have great dynamic contrast, but it feels like a volume knob. My advice would be to play within the dynamics by varying intensity and listening to the line. This is something I have struggled with alot and feel like I have never quite mastered. Again, great job.
