I'm pretty sure the young doctor was the star of "The Great Pretender" where he plays a hospital orderly who acquires the certificates of a deceased doctor friend and passes himself off as a qualified MD, killing some patients though mistakes and eliminating other people to conceal his fraud. He made such a strong impression on me that I can't help feeling suspicious of and prejudiced against him in this present rôle.
@VintageRomana Yes that must have been it. "The Great Pretender" was apparently just the soundtrack by the Platters, and also sung with guitar accompaniment by the star Stephen McGann.
Sad Cypress is one of the most successfull adaptation from the books. Truly beautiful and convincing. My only slight negative remark is about Mary Gerrard. She is a bit unlikable and oily in the film. In the book she actually was described as a wild rose, a beautiful flower, and very innocent.
In the novel Mary didn´t flirt with Roddy as she clearly does in the movie. She acts very decent and is clearly embarrased and sorry about the break up between Elanor and Roddy. Mary in the movie seems flattered and more selfish.
She's kind of hatefull. The only reason i can think of for portraying her this way is so that we dont feel sorry for her when she dies. Though that doesnt seem like a very adequate reason to me.
I know . except for mary everything is pretty good. I dont know why they made her that way. This is one of my favourite Agatha christie novels and I am SOOOOOOO glad they didnt make any of the characters gay or introduce new gay characters just to keep up with the times.
@Asriyah241 Sad Cypress is among my favourites aswell. So is Death Comes as the End, and THAT one is saved from terrible character or plot changes. Because it´s impossible to write Miss Marple or Poirot into the story that takes place in Egypt in 2000 BC.
@Asriyah241 No, I´m sorry, I was talking about the novels, not the films. What I meant was Death comes as the End will never be rewritten for television because it´s not possible to take the plot and change it for Poirot or Miss Marple. You know there are episodes from the 'Marple' show where Tommy and Tuppence are friends of Miss Marple. So stupid and wrong. I love that book as much as you do. Was in love with Hori from the first time I read it.
I know . i saw one in which tuppence was bordering on alchoholism and Tommy was apparently too involved in his work to pay attention to her. It was SUPPOSED to be By the Pricking of my Thumbs but what Miss marple was doing there I really have no clue! The books are so brilliant that they dont need any additions or changes.
And yeah it is good they cant rewrite DCATE for television. especially if they were gonna make a gay Ipy or something which is what they'd be likely to do.
@Asriyah241 Exactly. A gay Ipy and mayby Nofret the transvestite? Also I strongly dislike how they put Miss Marple in books where she doesn´t belong, like the terrible 'The Secrets of Chimneys'. A book so full of fun nonsense, and happening in circles where Miss Marple the gentlewoman, didn´t move. Plus the characters and plot was totally changed for no good reason.
i havent seen that one but i can totally imagine it. They do that a lot with miss marple. There was an adaptation of The Sittaford Mystery in which miss marple was present and even the identity of the murderer was different,
It was unrecognisable as TSM. Why do they bother saying its an adaptation when it clearly isnt.
@Asriyah241 I only hope the Marple team don´t mess with 'They came to Baghdad', and shoehorn Miss Marple into that story. It´s such a fun ride with Victoria Jones, the young opportunist heroine, and the story doesn´t feature any of the usual Christie sleuths. Or worse ... they try to fit Miss Marple into 'And Then There Were None'! :-(
NO NO! Even they wouldnt be so cruel as to try to ruin And Then there Were None. Its one of the first Christie's I read and one of my favourites. Actually now that i think about it there IS an adaptation of And then There were None. I havent seen it yet but I've been planning to. And I dont see how they could have put Poirot or Miss Marple or any of the regular sleuths in it. its not possible.
Oh thank you so much! I adored this book, and am looking forward to see this in live action! Damn astro concentrating on entertainments and not looking to scoop this wonderful, if not successful series.
Oh, such a beautiful start.
