Wow, that's boss! I can't sight read at all! I can't believe he was able to sight read that piece. It sounds kinda like each hand has it's own story/melody ish type thing if you know what I mean.
I have a question i have 9 months piano lessons now and my sight reading is really bad!
Im at inventions now and most of the time i memorize the notes and then learn them out of memory, but thats not what i want i want to learn sight reading just like you can.
How long did it take for you to sight read? i am really interested it that.
but a piano piece as famous as the goldberg variations, i'am sure you would have heard it before , no? when you mention sightreading in this video, are you saying that you're playing something you're never heard, seen or read before and you're playing this as you go by merely looking at the music in real time?
Hearing it first does give you an idea as to how it should sound, an advantage indeed. But the true test comes when you have not heard a piece before. Luckily, i'm able to read both equally as well.
Hanon is useful for developing finger strength and presents patterns which may be useful during sightreading. it introduces the factor of repetitious play. this trains you to look ahead measures- your mind should always be ahead of your fingers during sightreading hanon = developing strength, Czerny = using that strength, Clementi/mozart for sight reading practice. i wouldnt buy a book to "teach you how to sight read" its simply a process which you must learn from practice.
So, if I practice Hanon throughly to the end, I can play anything?
BTW, how did you first learn to sightread. I'm an ok pianist, just a sucky sightreader. I was going to just buy a book called A Line A Day, but I feel that is not necessary if I just stick to sightreading easier songs that I already have in my repertoire. Thanks.

Ok, thanks. So, what studies do you recommend for beginner sightreading?
