the high D is on the fast cadenza close to the end, it's not a sustained note, the sustained note is a high C, but the highest in the whole recording is the high D in the cadenza.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think she also sang D's in her Lucia recording. I think she transposed the whole "Ancor Non Giunse... Regnava Nel Silenzio... Quando Rapito" part up so that she would be singing D's instead of C's. =D
Oh... so the score that I got from IMSLP isn't in the original key. So that explains why some sopranos end their Mad Scene with a high F instead of an E-flat. Thanks. =D
Indeed, most sopranos sing "regnava nel silenzio" and the mad scene down a whole step, the duetto with the baritone up a whole step, and other transpositions here and there, lol.
Thanks for these videos. Her voice is truly beautiful.
Kinda off topic.. but, uploader, you seem to know your stuff about the voice.. I think you should give me a vocal assesment on Leona Lewis & Mariah Carey - some people say they are "among the best singers" - but I want to know how good they are TECHNICALLY =]
Well, Leona...she has a nice voice, but undeveloped, and she does not sing well in tune live. Mariah...well, she was the best when it comes to female pop vocalists when in her prime, nowadays she is just whispers and dolphin notes.
Clearly, Caballe was no coloratura, although she was a great singer with an astounding technique. Take, for example the ascending and descending chromatic scale at 1.41: the ascent is on the heavy side, and the descent ends up being blurred and slightly inaccurate at the end. However, what really rules Caballe out is her inability to sing rapid staccati passages in altissimo. She could never manage a Bell Song or Queen of the Night's aria , and this, of course, is true coloratura territory.
Well of course she never had the top notes like Joan Sutherland or Maria Callas, in the bel canto repertoire where the highest is usually Db6 she managed OK.
@vocalissimo1 Your description of the chromatic scale she tries to sing is quite accurate... However the rapid staccati remark I find unfounded. Caballe hardly sang any literature necessitating them, and I am sure if she were to embark on the enterprise of singing the Clochettes or Hoelle Rache staccati would be her last problem... In fact, I would invite you to listen to her "Nell'astro che piu fulgido" from her Verdi rarities album as well as her Masnadieri studi recording for accurate stac's
This woman is a worldwide treasure. I love that no matter how full or powerful her voice is, it never loses it's beautiful tone. Just exquisite. Thanks so much for posting.
I keep going back to this aria...she's just so very dramatic especially towards the end...and yet it's beautifully lyric...it's like the audio definition of opera (soprano singing)...I think she's just amazing! The way she holds that high note...and she spins her phrases so excitingly...
The picture reminds me that La Caballe was born to a humble background. But, he talent lead her to sing for more historically important and influential cultural icons than we dare imagine. Despite this she remained humble and kind in nature. A truly great example a of human being. Good post. My warm regards,
You are correct, the point is that there is a high D, sung beautifully, a note not which is rare for Montserrat, and whenever she has sung it was FFF not light and pretty like in here.

Silly to argue over the range of her voice. Most likely sings better than most of her critics, and definitely better than I do.

Montserrat has the best version of all, my song will be this one, however, it will take me 1 year to get success of this song

at last, the highest note is C6, not D6. it's G5-C6
anncajo 2 months ago
@anncajo
The high D is not the held note, that is a C
The high D is at the climax of the cadenza before the ending.

@DrRigolettoPianist
She sang that in its original key which puts the high B's to high Db's
But she has never really had good extreme top notes, so she screamed those high notes dreadfully

It is very magnificently sung for a mere coloratura aria. She's terrific! I love it
