What's funny is that this is an exaggeration of how the French actually park. They use the "bumpers" to bump against the cars in front of and behind them, and thus more cars can fit. Works for them. The comedy here is the force of the hits, and also the small car/large space. Great film.

Actually, the originals aren't even funny. A comedy requires a person to show expression when acting dopey, which is what Steve Martin pulls off. That is why it's deemed funny. The originals are just pure stupidity.
