  • I used to frequent a pub called the Red Rooster at Medan Tuanku in the early eighties where a band with an exStroller quitarist (Hassan I think) played - cant remember the name. Another act there was Search - that was before they became famous.Loved the Scorpions songs Search played then. Those were the days!

  • Too bad, it's not the original line-up. Maybe one is, that's all.

  • always watch them perform in ol skool in jalan gasing PJ...

  • My childhood days revisited just listening to this. I was in maxwell school KL then and it's still a pleasure to be able to listen to the Strollers today and i'm sure this song is still a hit among all the old boys whether it's find the dabble dreams of yours or climb the devil tree. Thanks Keith for such beautiful memories of the past that i can still cherish. Woooh... cherish reminds me of David Cassidy. Cheers man.

  • Gosh i thought i would never ever see this on YouTube. Thanks. I have a CD of the Strollers i bought 3 yrs ago while browsing in a CD store by chance and immediately bought it. It's released by LIFE Records.

  • keithyoong, which pub in PJ, btw. I have always like this song since I was young. It was so, so long ago.

  • @kiongaw Someone mentioned The Strollers 2 perform at the Hard Rock Cafe Kuala Lumpur (Sunday night), Backyard (SriHartamas) Saturday. That was sometime ago, I don't know if this info is still valid. Will keep you updated if I get the latest info.

  • @keithyoong I am away in Cambodia n will be back in late March. If they are around town during the period, it would be great.

  • @keithyoong Old achool bistro jalan gasing on thursdays

  • @keithyoong Old school bistro jalan gasing on thursdays. I think only Billy Chang & Hussein were the old members still with the group. Hassan the former lead guitarist already balik kampung & spend his time studying the religion

  • @keithyoong please do....it would be wonderful to go listen to them play - im pretty sure many bikerz would love their songs as we have similar wavelengths....

  • HI Strollersbuddies...Last Friday my brother and i went to see them play at a kinda pub at Tropicana Golf & Country Club. Heard they having a short stint there....only Fri nites, this coming Fri being the last. Awesome nostalgic fun. Go check it out!

  • This song reminds me when I was in Remove class or Form 1(1973/74) when I often overheard my elder brother playing this song on the cassette. If u can send me the digital copy ,I may be able to convince some karaoke outlets to include this song in their song album (not sure about copyrights issue though). Are these guys still around? They should organise a reunion concert for his fans. bring back good memories ! thanks Lee60

  • @jabowockee These guys are still around except Nand Kumar. The lead singer Mike Magness is in Australia. The others are collaborating with two Alleycats members in a pub in PJ playing all the wonderful hits. They have been going around the country for the past year or so. They are known as The Strollers 2 now.

  • dear keithyoong, who is the original singer of this song? Ive heard versions by Ella Fitzgerald, Linda Rostadt & Nina Simone. The one by the Strollers seems more soulful & emotional

  • many many thanks for this wonderful song - when i was a kid, didnt know this was sung by a malaysian band - im proud to know it now....

  • @fapolo60 Thanks for dropping by. Glad you found my channel. Never too late to realise. Enjoy. Keith.

  • I'm glad to see some recognition for this group! These guys lived in our neighbourhood in Petaling Jaya at that time and were really nice. Kumar gave my brother guitar lessons. Everyone liked their music.

  • I am looking for their song that has the following " Just like a robin chasing the sun..like a moth to the flame.." Anyone can help? Pls

  • @nawiderahman

The name of the song is "small town woman" sung originally by Mark Lindsay

  • Can't believe I found this song after so many years, and now listening to it a few thousand miles away from Malaysia. Brings back lots of memories, Malaysia was better those days. Anyway, bless.

  • This song made number one in Singapore in October 1970. Just when I was revising for Senior Cambridge exams. Excellent vocals from Nand Kumar and great organ ride out by Michael Magness.

  • @Bluesdirections Memories are made of this, right ? Btw, I made an error. Mike Magness sang this. Pls see info. Mike Magness Jr. corrected my error. Nice of you to drop by. Cheers.

  • My cousin got this historical album,It remind me of those day.

  • Great stuff, Keith. Just las week my cousin and I (we're in our late forties) were just wondering about that song that goes 'do what you gotta do...' and there you have it here on YouTube! Thanks.

  • Now you & cousin can sing along to the montage here. Glad you found your long lost love. So have many fans of The Strollers. Cheers. Keith.

  • I would love to get a copy of all their songs, any suggestion friends?

  • i still have this EP somewhere in my store

  • Good for you, man. Could fetch some money on Ebay. It's a collector's item these days. Treasure it my friend.

    Keith

  • Thank you KeithYoong for all the wonderful songs of The Strollers... sure bring back memories of my childhood days with my boyfriend (then, who is now my hubby). I've been searching this song "Before The Dawn", I wonder if it is sung by The Strollers, too. Please, KeithYoong, I appreciate very much if you could search the song for me.... love the song so much.. :)

  • Glad those good memories are flowing back to you thru' these songs by The Strollers. You know which channel to go to on your next anniversary. Not too sure about the song "Before The Dawn". Maybe someone out there might have a better idea.

    Keith

  • I have heard the original version sung by the songwriter Jim Webb, the Four Tops and Nina Simone.

And my verdict : The Strollers does it best!

  • Your verdict is spot on. And so say all of us.

  • @keithyoong Keith, I have just created "Remembering The Strollers of Malaysia" group on Facebook. I am inviting you to join the group and do the honours by linking your YouTube videos on The Strollers to the FB group. Best regards, Omar Ariff

  • Wonderful blast from the past. Thank you, keithyoong. Never forgot this song despite migrating to US half a life ago. I was 12 when I heard this song and fell in love with Nand Kumar in the most serious way. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Could you email this to me? Thanks.

  • Sure and thanks for dropping by. Btw, if you read 'more info' you will find that it was an error. It wasn't done by Nand Kumar, it's Mike Magness and the info comes from his son, Mike Magness Jr. Somehow I got that wrong from the CD sleeve when the recording co. re-released it in 1999/2000. Oh, I need your e-mail add. Just drop it in my Inbox. Cheers.

  • I've been searching for this song for ages.

Thanks for uploading. Can you email me all the strollers songs that you have? Thousand Thanks!

  • I once saw them in Seremban, NSCRC Hall in the early 70's. Those were the bell-bottom days....my hair 'standing' now thinking of my bell-bottom pants. Good memories & teenage yrs. Nowadays, so many restrictions here & there, primary school homework just keep coming, there is no childhood for our youngins anymore.

  • Thank you to keithyoong and youtube or else i will never be able to find the songs from the Strollers again.

  • You're most welcome. Anything to bring back memories, this is the channel. And of course, YouTube is the site.

  • Thanks for the upload. Brings back wonderful memories of my childhood days.

  • Guys, The Strollers are performing in Charity event in Kota Kinabalu tonight organise by National Stroke Association (NASAM), my husband is the official photographer for the dinner.

  • Cinsideme, Thanks for the info. Have fun and here wishing your husband steady hands.

  • hi keithyoong, just wandering do you know this band Okervil River . how come they are singing this tune any connections

  • hi i saw this okervil river do this same song its horrid anyway i fell instantly in love with this song and i am learning this song to sing with my band Nightbirds

  • albassist457, Good luck to your band.

  • omg, i love this! old school malaysia! makes me proud being malaysian! :)

  • idzani, you just said it for everyone here, mate.

  • Hi 79555004, you're welcome. You are not alone. Many tears have shed thru' my channel, simply because people are sentimental and nostalgic. Memories of schooldays, huh ? Give me your e-mail add. and I shall send the MP3 formats of these great hits by the Strollers of Malaysia. Cheers, Keith.

  • I believe Jim Webb wrote the song. I learned it from a Sammy Davis, Jr. LP.

  • this just brings back some nostagic feelings!

  • I bet everyone who stumbled upon this song has that good old familiar feeling. Schooldays back in the 70's ?

  • the true unity of Malaysia

  • I remember putting my last coin into the juke-box just to listen to midday sun..And I got to school without any penny left..Thank you .

  • yunodin, that was money well-spent back in those days. Now you can get back every penny worth here. Thanks for dropping by. Btw, this jukebox is free.

    Cheers

    Keith

  • Nice of you to find one of your fav songs all the way from the Netherlands. Yes, you're right, it's "climb that devil tree of yours" which differs from the original lyrics. It's a sort of improvisation and i think it sounded good. If you read below, you'll find the singer's son (TheInappropriateness) commenting. Maybe I'll get him to ask his dad what made him change the lyrics.

  • Great to see this upload! I and a friend of mine developed a special relationship to Strollers' songs a few years back. We collected Southeast Asian pop and psych records in a frenzy back then and later played them mixed up with East Asian punkrock at a small, local club where the waterpipe smoke laid heavy. Our favorites were "Big Step" and "Before the Dawn". The latter we played as the final slow dance. Wish I had known they were still playing since I just got back from Malaysia...

  • Comment removed

  • @5permwhal6 i've been trying to locate 'big step' song on u tube to no avail :( if yiu happen to have or know of the source, cd u please share it...... many thanks!!

  • @fapolo60 Their version of 'Big Step' is way too shabby. The original were done by a group Shekane but it's hard to get a copy of that. Anybody have a mp3

  • hey man.. Which neighbourhood is that?

  • Hey! It was at a student run club in Lund, Sweden, some years ago. If they're still playing clubs in Malaysia I just have to go there next time I visit! Give my best regards and thanks to your father & co.! Their tunes really found their way into our hearts.

  • Hi there.. it's so great to see such support of the band on youtube. Michael Magness is my father and although he is completely averse to anything to do with computers, I know he'd get a kick out of this. One slight correction though - I noticed you have Nand Kumar as the lead singer on this song - it actually was dad that sang this one! Really nice to connect !

  • At last ! I've been expecting this eversince I put up this tribute (on my knees bowing to your father). Sorry for the error. Have made erratum on 'more info'. You're welcome. Say Hi to daddy and on behalf of all the fans of The Strollers, I want to thank him for all those great sounds. His organ-playing (on a Hammond I suppose) is a killer. Cheers. More reply coming to your Inbox.

  • Looking forward to your mail buddy. Actually saw them playing at ol'Skool last night (every thursday.. PLUG PLUG) and they rocked. They sang some of the old tunes. I know Hassan sang Do what you gotta do last night and I still got goose bumps. I even managed to get up and do a rendition of "hard to handle" by "the black crowes"

  • sha 1dz, glad you found my channel. You are not alone. We can actually form a Strollers fan club now. Tell your pal Raja Ahmad Shah about it. Thank you too.

    Keith

  • Thanks qkx4505.

  • mosiza, you can say that again. Judging from your age, you have good taste. Thanks for dropping in.

  • If i'm not mistaken this song was recorded somewhere in end of 1969. Taken from the Strollers debut LP released early 1970. Great version from them!

  • goldenvenus, have you got fantastic memory or what? Only nice songs leave you with such good reminiscence. It leaves an impact on what you were doing and where you were while listening to great songs like this one. Agree ?

  • What a group during those days and look at the lyrics, I luv u guys, its nostalgic, brings back good memories, Thanks for the upload

  • Thanks so much for posting. Sure bring back all the memories. My older brother used to play this all the time and I was not allowed to touch the 45's ;)

  • Aren't all big brothers the same ? Mine won't allowed me to touch his guitar. Now you can play this over & over again without your big bro's permission. It's here to share. Cheers.

    Keith

  • this is awsome. Having lived in Malaysia during the 70's listening to "Do what you gotta do..." Brings a lot of memories....What a talented group! SHLim

  • Penangite living in the uk. thanks, brings back lots of happy memories and carefree days.

can someone tell me if it was The Strollers who did the Singapore Airlines promo. song Singapore Girl or was it another band? trying to find song on youtube.

  • Hi thanks for dropping in. It could be another band, maybe a Singapore band, who did that S.A. promo. At that time, there were the October Cherries, Western Union Band, and lots of good bands in Singapore too. I have one guy who commented on my channel who seems to be a guru on this. I'll ask him. However I doubt you can find it on YouTube at the moment.

  • P.S Keith Yoong...please find more..and post it here. Im planning to release my own album of this kind. Anybody out there..come and lets do it together.

  • Sorry for the late reply. I saw your comment but was busy. Yes, I have more of these. Good luck to your album. Use these songs for inspiration.

  • I've listened to many version of this Jim Webb's song but Strollers was the best...a real classic and making it its own. The keyboard part was a classic too. For those young musician out there..this is the kind of music you all should aim for...honest. There were other bands from Malaysia and Singapore...equally good. Songs like Coffee Toafee...etc..

  • Let me have your e-mail add. and I shall send you the MP3s incl. Coffee Toffee.

  • Thanks Keith. Now I can share this with my old kakis way back from the 70s. Anyone know this malay musician from setapak high school who was in a rock band, I think he was in this group or another one.

  • Alright, more kakis. Welcome mate.

  • Grim Preachers, heard of them?

  • Hey Buck, no problem, bro. Now you know you are not alone. And I can say this, we are not alone.

  • this is a great band.. and its from malaysia. I dont know that this band exist. Thanks to Malaysian stupid media. -.-

  • Now you know why everyone's turning to the Internet. The mass media in Malaysia do not endorsed true achievements but instead makes big "hoo-hahs" over small achievements. Welcome to Malaysia, my friend.

  • its sad they were never awarded by AIM ,the people at aim should award them ,they have hits in the malaysian top ten their records sell well here. They were one of the best best M,sian band.

  • The problem with the people at AIM is that they do not see what real talent is. It's all one-sided. The Strollers was a group consisted of all races of Malaysia. It represented a true Malaysia but people now don't look at it this way. That's why this country is left behind.

  • You,re rightman,at AIm there mostly uneducated judges which knows nothing,

  • Thank you for bringing back great memories. Haven't heard this song since the 70s. Can't believe I still remember the lyrics, awesome. My regards to The Strollers. From Washington, USA with love. Terima kasih. Peace.

  • Sorry, I didn't notice your comment earlier. I'm glad you found your way to my channel all the way from Washington, USA. Anyway it's nice to know there are fans from all over the world. If you need MP3s of The Strollers, send me your e-mail add. to my Channel Inbox. Terima Kasih.

  • Thanks Keith for the super, speedy reply complete with mp3s. You're the man! I'm enjoying the songs now ...

  • Man, thanks Keith. Your vids sure brings back childhood memories for me.

  • really nice version

  • If you want all their songs on MP3, just let me have your e-mail add. I have given you mine in my last message. Check your inbox.

  • This video is awesome, keep going man!!!

  • hi Keith,

    made my day too.

    thanks.

how about october Cherries & Western union band?

    rgds.

    simon

  • Hi Simon

Thanks for watching. I think its a matter of time I'll have songs of October Cherries/The Surfers or Western Union Band on my channel. The demand is pouring in by the dozens.

    Keith.

  • Keith, you made my day! Bell-bottom Boleh! I've been looking for this song for years and finally found it here. Thanks so much. Where can I get the CD?

    Zamani

  • You're welcome, Zamani. I supposed you went to bed last night with a smile, right ? Yeah, bell-bottoms, Amco Jeans, Kapok guitars .....

Glad you found my channel. The re-released CD album is not on sale here. I've checked.

My channel is gonna be around. So why not come back for more. I think I'll put up more songs from the album. I didn't expect such a good response. Fans of The Strollers (Malaysia) are still aplenty.

  • When I was back in Malaysia,I bought this CD in one of the mall in Kuala Lumpur.Try Sungai Wang.I got 2 October Cherries CD too.I will be going back this end of May

  • Rockyzaz, thanks. Will make it a point to check at Sg Wang.

  • Which is actually correct? strollers sang "climb that devil tree of yours' while Linda Ronstadt's version was "try that dabble dreams of yours". Anyway thanks keith for those wonderful memories of my school days. I may have lost this LP but i never forget this great song.

  • It has never crossed my mind but I think the former sounds better. And you know what, according to a certain review, The Strollers cover of this song is the best among the clutch of originals. I agree very much so. Glad you found this.

  • I just heard the version by The Four Tops and they sang "chase that dabble dreams of yours". It's a sort of improvisation by different artistes but I'm glad The Strollers being an Asian band had their own style. We are talking about the 70's you know. You don't get that originality anymore. I'm sure fans of The Strollers will agree with me on this.

  • Keith,

Great songs. The other song is Just as I am. Really bring back the good old days.

    Jeremy

  • Hi Jeremy

Glad you saw this. Sure brings back those memories of our schooldays.
