I play it by detuning my Dobro to DADGBE, then sticking a capo at the third fret. He's not doing anything that difficult technically ... it's all in the feeling.

Definitely among my favorite (and most played) songs of all time. Unlike many songs that go on for 14+ minutes, there is hardly any excess here. The word cinematic comes readily to mind...this is like a short movie that hardly needs the visual to tell its story and really make you feel something for the characters.
