You'd think that, but "nitro" is one of those words that the Japanese decided to pronounce differently when they adopted it. It normally is pronounced "neetoro" over there. Some other examples are: energy ("enerugee"), myth ("maisu") and fanfare ("fanfareh").

XD you could say it's reversible for when the Americans adopt Japanese words, such as karaoke, which the Americans pronounce "kerioki" as seen by the Japanese. (I suck at showing phonetics, so I usually consider Japanese the pinnacle of pronounciation...)

But Japanese I's are always pronounced like "ee" in English. The I in Nitro, though, should be spelled out as "ai" in katakana.
Uhh, right? I don't believe there's more than one correct way to pronounce nitro.

Yes, ニトロ is one of the ways to render "nitro." It probably reflects a non-English pronunciation (Neo-Latin, Italian, French).
