My little sister had this Barbie, and after about 4 years, she finally danced her last when the thick rubber band that held her torso to her legs finally crumbled and she snapped in half! Oh well, she looked like Elaine from Seinfield when she danced anyway!

My mom saw this commericail in mid of 1986 so, when I was obsessed with Barbie (last year actually, now im obsessed wiff Blythe ^^) I watched alot of 80s (obsessed wiff 80s too ^^) commercials. Then I started looking for one on Amazon. I found one, for an amazing price of 18 dollars (plus shipping)! I begged my dad for it, and now, I have two dolls in my Vintage Barbie collection. (The second one is Living Skipper from 1970)

Gem was great, and I used to watch her all the time, but Barbie had been around for a whole LOT longer than Gem and she's withstood the test of time. I don't think she put Gem 'out of business', which is a weird concept.

@DataSeven1 i disagree. from what i recall, barbie & the rockers was a poor man's jem. oh they became popular, and believe me, i bought one of the rocker's dolls too.... but it never took hold w/little girls quite like jem. jem faded out quickly in the late '80s, but the rockers went out about the same time. mattel had nothing to do with jem's decline. the craze had just come and gone, that's all.

Hasbro bought the rights to Jem back a couple of years ago. I think they have plans to revive the franchise eventually. Christy Marx, the head writer for the Jem series said she had wanted to make a modern-day revival for years, but there were too many legal complications preventing her from doing it.
