Even though VH didn't exist when this was video was done, they did not want it to be made. The company did not want to be sued and had to play it as safe, which meant no original VH music. While this limits the documentary there is still a ton of great stuff that has never turned up elsewhere, namely original bass player Mark Stone, as well as others who were close to the band and saw them in the earliest days. It's flawed but still essential for any hardcore VH fan.
regarding "DD", I dig "Dancing In the Streets" & it made sense to me cos it was a party song but I hated "Pretty Woman" & "Happy Trails." Also, it's not like VH didn't put covers ("You really Got Me", "You're No Good" ,ect...) or oddball/filler songs on their older lp's ("Could This Be Magic", "Tora Tora") to begin with either. But yes, "DD" should've been better.
& they weren't putting out 2 lp's a yr. like KISS was doing from 1974-1979, w/lesser musicians. No excuse.
"Diver Down" was the first Van Halen CD I did own. It is what made me into a fan. But it is the weakest of the original Van Halen CD's. Mainly because of the covers, they aren't bad, but most of the original tunes on it, everything from the album before "Fair Warning" and the album after "1984" is better. So I don't really get why David Lee Roth thought it was such a great idea to put that many covers on it. Especially when the originals they could have done instead would been better :)
man that would be almost like being in heaven The first time i heard VH, i was checking out a friends fretless wonder for the first time and talkiing up my god, Rhoads, and how it must be like heaven being able to own a Rhoads-like axe. Mike said, 'Van Halen's better. I'm like b.s. noone could be (i was 13, heard Randy at 12). Theyre like, 'you hav'nt heard him before'? I'm like no, so they play Erup. Were looking at each other during it , all 4 nodding hell yeah in awe. None noticed my erection
the only thing that pisses me off about this documentary is that when they show VH playing, they play gay ass music making it seem like there playing it. WTF PLAY VH!!
Ironically, dancing in the streets is one of my fav covers by van halen. It has amazing and intricate guitar work in it. I can't imagine that albun without that song in it. Dave was right to include it.
It don't get any better than this documentary. I've been a Van Halen fan from the start. This was my favorite band when I was in my teens (still is). This is kickass Van Halen stories told by members of the band. And all the guys that were there with the band from the start, Broderick, Emerson, etc., also have bitchin' Van Halen stories and accounts. Awesome vids!
well back in the seventies and eighties sex went with rock music. and im sure the ladies was lined up to say that they slept with them. the number of woman has to be in the hundreds. just imagine the clap and crabs. they got. i bet they was on penicillan all the damn time. and using the crab lice shampoo every time they washed their ass. could you just imagine the crabs biting their ass on stage when they was jumping around and sweating. god i bet they was dying to scratch them balls on stage!
@belmontthelegend I DON'T LIKE USING THIS WORDS CUZ ITS FUKIN GAY BUT "OMG!!" HE'S MAKING A REFERENCE TO THE VIDEO MAN, CAN'T BELIEVE YOU DIDN'T CATCH THAT SINCE YOU'RE THE UPLOADER. LMAO!! WATCH FROM 4:10-5:57

Was the documentary unable to secure the rights to any of the actual "studio" work of Van Halen? Sounds like it.
