  • can someone tell me the meaning of this song?

  • Robert Fripp: Guitar

  • nice eye.......

  • i like it...

  • così...

  • One of the first 2 CDs I bought- after wearing out my cassette recording of the album. Played repeatedly. One moment of enlightenment came when I listened to it on decent headphones instead of a shabby single speaker cassette player.

    Wow!

  • pt es el numero 11111111

  • You could understand: "You knock on a bus." haha

  • What strikes me about this song, is that despite its serious content, soundwise it is the only 'bright' spot in an otherwise dark, depressing, gloomy album. Kinda eases up the athmosphere of this one

  • I love the German version too, don't understand a word but it just works.

  • does the very end of this (last few seconds) remind anyone else of the very end of I Don't Remember?

  • great album . great track

  • I saw Gabriel at Hoffman Estates near Chicago on the "SO" tour, it was an outdoor event and it was raining. Early in the set he sang this song and when he sang "it's only water" he held his arms up and the rain immediately stopped. It was one of the coolest moments I have ever experienced at a show. I thought he was a god. Still think that.

  • Gabriel,Iluminati,futurist,

  • @JMRBAQ Futurists are cool better than normal lying joe wanker pleb fools Gabriel a genius

  • thank you!

  • Gabriel was definitely pushing the creative envelope with this album. With "So", I think he saw Phil's success and thought "Shit, I'd better write some hit singles". And he did...

  • A man who was and still is -- way, way ahead of his time.

  • The whole album is a fucking masterpiece

  • Thanks for posting this one too. I like what you did with only using the album cover, but adding effects to it.

  • Genious album cover. Hipgnosis at it's best.

  • Saw the tour in 83 amazing....wore the T shirt tll it fell apart.

  • This album is definitely in my top five of all time.

  • @TravelerKM Along side London Calling!!!!

  • This is cool, but my fav will always be Shock The Monkey.

  • Funky bass!

  • I love Peter. I have 2 words about this album: Jerry Marotta!

  • If I could only have 10 albums to listen to this one would be on the list. Scary, funny, moving, brilliant.

  • Brilliant song! Great lyrics and great melody! Yes, I agree Peter was ahead of his time! Still is!

  • The drumming on this is so fucking intense!

  • @ThatBritGuy its Jerry Marotta on drums

  • God, I'd forgotten how damn good this album was

  • @JanineRobin WITH ROBERT FRIPP,JERRY MAROTTA,TONY LEVIN,DAVID RHODES,PAUL WELLER,PHIL COLLINS,PETER HAMMILL,...HOW COULD YOU NOT HIT A HOME RUN!! WHY RADIO SHIES AWAY(AMERICAN) IS A MYSTERY;THANKS YOUTUBE!!!!!!!!!!

  • @JanineRobin I'm ALWAYS forgetting. And then I work out how essential it is. I think it's just too potent and intense to listen to regularly.

  • to be or not to be---that is the question Sein oder Nicht-Sein---das ist hier die Frage (das ist die Zwtschgen!)

  • Superb song. Love the arrangements here although going a bit astray towards the end.

  • peter gabriel is a true Artist with a capital sense of conscience he is brilliant!

  • It's only water in a stranger's tears... you're not one of us... how can we be in, if there is no outside? -- Exceptional depiction of the insecure mind of prejudice.

  • classic new wave...best album, cover to cover must have. one of the most thought provokingalbums as well

  • How can we be in if there is no outside?

  • @Tubernaut

You have to be outside first to understand in :)

  • Or as Genesis sang on Carpet Crawlers, you gotta get in to get out.

  • I am not one of you, or maybe you are one of me.

  • Thank you so much for this!!!

  • Yep, it's PC. I believe this was the project where Peter told him, "No metal" as in "don't use any cymbals." End result is phenomenal!

  • The lyrics are part of my personal religious belief system (i.e. What's Wrong With This Picture?)... There is no "them" there is only US.

  • Como suena ese bajo por dios .... Peter no tiene igual.

    Maximo Peter !!

  • id like to add i love the sound of the fretless bass

  • whats the deal / no cymbals on this whole album

  • guess he wanted a creative challenge to see if he could make good music without cymbals. i think he succeeded. king crimson recorded 1980's Discipline without any hi-hat in the songs. i think they did a good job too

  • i love elephant talk. thanks for bringing that to my attention, i did not know that. big fan of king crimson.

  • He did succeed. Working with PG must have rubbed off on Robert Fripp.

  • this is my song fits my life so well

  • dessention without opposing opinion is tyranny

  • Hey, guess what? We ARE the liberals!

  • oh by the way thats Phil collins on the drums, Ive probably bought this album 5x over. I never get tired of the album... moody, philosophical, dark

  • There are actually two drummers on the track. Phil Collins + Jerry Marotta. The drum solo at the end is the high point of the track.

  • is that really Phil on drums? i didn't realise that

  • Yes and Peter Gabriel provided background vocals on Phil Collins' Take Me Home.

  • @AlexisCapri no, it's Jerry Marotta on this cut. Phil plays on "Intruder" and "No Self Control" where does a killer drum pattern.

  • one of the best observations of human nature EVER!! psst, dont tell the liberals

  • yeah the words are brilliant and the music is classic new wave... probably pete's most guitar-oriented tune.. It's my favorite PG tune as well.

  • @zwartepiet412 Most guitar-oriented? Hmm. Try Exposure on Scratch.

  • @zwartepiet412 You are so right. I wish he'd turn up the guitars in his mixes sometimes. Too quiet and in the back of the mix on some of his past albums.

  • @zwartepiet412 "New wave"? Like 80s new wave? This kicks the crap out of anything coming from 2010! Yeah, It is certainly a NEW WAVE!

And a PG tune at that. Yay! You have all the tags available in your filing cabinets.

Pete, is one, swell guy. We had a late dinner, in early October after a Thursday night show, in NY city. He is very clever, yet a bit quiet in crowds. We sat in the 'smoking section', so that we were certain to be left alone. Charming man.

  • The more I hear this, the more I think it's one of the best songs ever written. The second verse in particular, is genius.

  • Holy Mackerel! are they still policing us? What the fu-?

  • PG? This song should be rated 'R', at least!

  • I love the way this song starts! It's one of my favorite PG songs ever!

  • Well but this, the Talking Heads and The Police ARE from the eighties. From the cool part of them! Each decade has its cool and bad parts, and who cares about the bad ones when we can listen to great songs like this? :D

  • i´m agree the best album from peter gabriel and the song "game without frontiers"

  • I love this album. I thought with this, The Talking Heads, The Police, that the 80's would be real cool. No sooner did I think that and they rammed Huey Lewis, Pat Benetar etc.

  • @PeterMayer Most likely, Neil Giraldo puts your guitar playing to shame. Instead of saying "these guys suck" how about you get positive and dazzle us with your knowing about why this song is good.

Can you tell us in what key it's written? What is the time signature? Can you suss out the instruments? Tell us about the drumming patterns?

And you fancy yourself a critic? LMFAO

  • @TruthAxe Hey jagoff! Where does it say it that I said it sucks? So before you write something fucking stupid, make sure YOU know what you're talking about. Yeah, the key is in E. Real tough. SUSS out the intruments? You mean drums without the cymbals, Larry Fast on synth, and overdubbed guitars? Woo..real tuff. Suss this bitch....

  • You amuse, PeterMayer. Again!

Anyone can read liner notes. What's it like going thru life suffering from musical ignorance?

    Oh how you amuse.

  • What liner notes are you talking about? And why bring up Pat Benetar when you are not a fan? Trolling obivously. You tried being clever by asking me what key "Not One Of Us" was in. OOooo real tough one. You're obviously someone who pretends he knows a lot about music, but in the end, you talk out your ass.

  • @TruthAxe oh I get it. I think I struck I nerve because I didn't like Pat Benatar? Big fucking deal. yeah, I prefered Gabriel, Talking Heads, The Police, King Crimson, etc.

  • You amuse, PeterMayer.

I am not a fan of Pat Benetar. Yet, it's obvious when an assclown such as yourself gets up to commenting on YouTube.

The Talking Heads? They wore their musical instruments. Professionals were hired to record the songs in studio and to perform on stage for major tours.

  • Oh really? Which album and tour? All of them? The Heads never played as a band huh? Douch bag.
