  • You said when they bite you need to scruff them. Y did you scruff the one you were holding twice when it didn't do anything to u!?!?!

  • When Lucky bites too hard, instead of flicking his nose, I just give him a tap on the nose and say "NO". It seems to be working

  • My ferret play bites and it doesnt even hurt at all itts almost like he knows what play biting is.

  • Scruffing the ferret doesn't hurt it. it calms it down and makes it yawn.....

  • @roslovesneither YEAH BUT IT DOESNT MEAN "YOU DID A BAD THING" xD

  • They bite fking hard, watching this with blood on my hands!!!

  • THIS WOMENS CRAZY

  • i got two ferrits and they dont bite at all unless i get inbtween them while thre play fighting (i let them run around in the garouge and i lock the doors and close the windows so they cant get out...they love to rasle and hide ther food

  • my ferret won't bite me unless i piss him off. XD lol i love him. They are better than puppies!

  • pick it up by the scruff then hiss in its face... thats what the mother ferret would do....

  • i give him a tick over he's nose with my middlefinger and he stopped biting sometime's my female wants to get my finger than i do it again and now she dont bite look at my channel for my 2 little ferrets of 6 weeks old they so cute

  • my ferret is walking round in circles whats up with it ):

  • this helped soooo much :D

  • I have a ferret for 3 months and when i want to play with him he starts to make weird sounds and runs away,Yes i flicked him when he bites but i stopped when i found out its not good for them, i think he is now scared, and he bites so i often wear gloves,i dont know what to do somebody please help me because i dont want a wild animal...

  • This whole series, "Expert Village" is bogus and full or erroneous and potentially dangerous information. This "expert", Sarah Tingle, most of the time, doesn't know what she is talking about. Watch the rest of their videos and you'll see that. Her employer, Extra Care Animal Hospital, knows of her incompetence but does not care. They should ALL be boycotted and dismissed as incompetent quacks.

"Expert" = "X" is an unknown quantity; "spurt" is a drip under pressure.

  • I WANT ONE!

  • When i first got my ferret, he played very rough, i had been told by a vet to scruff him and flick his nose when the play became to rough, this is what i did and after 2 weeks he stopped biting hard. This method worked very well for me.

I have read comments about flicking and how bad it is, but it worked great, i also wanna stress that i didnt scruff him then punch him in the nose, was just a light flick and he has never been aggressive towards me

  • Im a first time ferret owner. I adopted two ferrets from a shelter last week. They are two brothers and are 18 months of age. I understand that they are still scared of me. They do bite alot, gets even worse when they are playing. Im just wondering are older ferrets as easy to train as babys?

  • You shouldn't flick them, that will teach them that the hand is a bad thing. therefore more biting will occur. Scruff and slowly drag them on their backs across the floor for a few seconds (Smooth floor, don't wanna give them carpet burn!) It's what their mothers do and has worked for me.

  • just try and grab his tongue, my ferret hates it and rarely even play bites me. if he does he stops right away cuz i ruin his fun lol

  • OR if they still bite - do not surpress their natural thing. Train them and soon you will have your own BATTLE FERRET!

Challenge other ferret owners and play for money!

  • @EdTheBadass Lmao good idea!

  • @EdTheBadass Best. Idea. Ever. I will name him Badassicus and create a Ferret Colliseum!

  • Ave!

Caesar approves. You have been granted permission to do so.

Caesar shall participate in matches to give thumbs up or thumbs down, if he sees such opportunity.

  • @EdTheBadass i bet mike vick was the 4 thumbs up lol

  • @EdTheBadass YES! LMAO!

  • @EdTheBadass Micheal Vick is that you?

  • @crimsonknight101

    Zoiks!

    Exit stage right! *tigigigigig*

  • @EdTheBadass i challenge you to a ferret battle..... sounds better in pokemon

  • @lamboracer22

    your ferret is evolving..

dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun

You now own a Battle Wolverine!

  • @EdTheBadass oh yea! now i will dominate and make it have babys to take over california to make these lil guyz legal

  • @lamboracer22

    Damn you Schwarzenegger!!!!!

  • @EdTheBadass I actually laughed at this.

  • @EdTheBadass LOL xD thats a joke right O.o

  • What if I have long nails? How do I grab him, I'm afraid it's gonna hurt him

  • @roxita92

grab him with your feet fingers

  • Comment removed

  • For a timeout for my ferrets i put them in a small empty trash can for a few minutes as a time out sort of...do any of yall recommend this? I do it after i scruff them and hiss at them and drag them on the floor a bit and only if they bite really hard..

  • BEST EVER aid to stop bitting FERRETONE Skin and coat suppliment, rub some into hands, ferrets can not resist the stuff

  • I bought a ferret who is 1 and a half month old,i thought that he will play with me but he bites me all the time an it hurts as hell. What i have to do,i tried some methods but it doesn't work.:(((((

  • @DarkAsassin87 get some ferretone, its a skin and coat suppliment and ferrets can not resist it. Rub some in to your hands before you handle ur baby and you SHOULD find that he licks insted of biting, I used it for all 7 of mine and it worked. also lots & lots & lots of handling will help.... ps dont put ferret near your face cos that hurts more =)

  • Vv lmao

  • hi sarah..she just bit me again..... :(

  • hi sarah, ive just bought a ferret today and she already bit my finger bleeding? i was trying to pick her up but it seems like she just want to bit me.. what should i do? thanks

  • @pkpkau Ferrets need to become comfortable with you before you attempt to train them not to bite. If you haven't already given your ferret away, you should find a t-shirt and wear it for a couple of days then put it in your ferret's resting area where he/she can become accustomed to your smell. It really sounds like your ferret is not comfortable with you and is using his/her defensive bites which are incredibly painful.

  • dont flick! Just scruff and hiss!

  • Please do not 'flick' your ferret on the nose. Even a light tap on the nose can damage their primary sense of smell. Ferrets have delicate little noses, and flicking/or tapping it will make some ferrets very unhappy and insecure. They are intelligent enough to remember YOU hurt their nose and animals always remember people who are bad to them quicker than people who are good to them.

  • what do ferrets taste like?

  • @davfritz Like this 50.cal bullet here. Wanna try?

  • @davfritz not too good actually. plus, there's not that much meat on them.

  • Gosh I have just read that someone is chastising their ferret by flicking it...oh deat oh dear...I've spent many a happy evening flicking my ferret...one can get one's fingers biten...I find stroking one's hamster more soothing.thanks Ursula

  • actually your supposed to scruff the ferret then hiss at them cause naturally that is what their mothers do to them when they bite.

  • when i scruff my ferret he yawms til you let him go XD

  • you know ferrets hiss as well i tend to do the scruff of the neck as you showed and then hiss since the scruff did not work hissing helped as well.

  • you just have to say laud " stop that!" and as she showed take him up in ur hand. but really if just hang him around like that and then let him go.. it wont help anything.. u have to blow on his face ,talk laud and show that ur angry and put him in a cage for 15-20min.. that really helps.. no need to hit him .. but also u cant be so sweet to him, ihe will use it against you..

  • @Evenrix15Linda wrong?

  • @Evenrix15Linda You're an abusive idiot.

  • never flick your ferret.....that will just make them agressive, and if you flick too hard, you could kill them

  • ok she said to scruff the ferret to correct biteing but in another vid she said to scruff it to trim its nails and clean its ears

  • Just give them a gentle flick on the nose everytime they bite hard enough to hurt you. You simply need to let them know how hard is O.K.. The way another ferret will do that is to bite back and let the other ferret know, HEY THAT HURTS! As bad and evil as it sounds, to stop them from hurting you, hurt them (gently). I prefer a fairly gentle flick on the nose. Just enough to make them notice, It will only take a couple of hours in most cases to gentle them.

  • That worked with my female, but it really ticked off my male. if anything, it made him bite more.

  • THATS A WRONG WAY. that was long time ago till they found out it was bad.

i used to do that a long time ago too when i didnt know, and he got bruises on his nose...dark purple...it wasnt even tht hard. so dont do that. all of you ppl o_o its better to use domething else than that, like water spray, blowing on his face, or just a time out in his cage.

  • I think putting some sort of bitter apple cider or something like that on your fingers so they don't taste nice can help too :3

  • do ferrets likes to be hold??

  • Some do, some don't. Just like people, they all have different personalities. If you're interested in getting a ferret who likes to be held, don't be afraid to tell the breeder or shelter you'd prefer one. Some better pet stores may even know their ferrets' personalities enough that they can show you one who likes to be held (but no guarantees there!)

  • Very young and very old ferrets love to be held. Anything in between is entirely dependant on the ferrets personality and energy level IMHO.

  • Thanks ill try tht out :P

  • I just recently bought 2 ferrets theyr 16 weeks old and were lovely when i first met them, but now theyr inside of their hutch and everytime sum1 puts ther hand in, they latch on, i mean biting really hard and braking through the skin lots of blood, so i tried using gloves they grabbed the fingers of the gloves and were pulling my hand in2 the cage, they just seem 2 want 2 kill me so im considering getting rid of them any ideas?

  • they wanna play wit u, but u need to teach them not to bite hard, putting a finger across their mouth when they bite for a few seconds(just behind the teeth-Carefull not to choke the ferret!) worked for mine, now they hate the taste of finger in their little mouths and dnt bite [;

Scruffing will just make things worse in most cases, and so other physical punishment.

they need to be let out of their hutch for at least 2-3 hrs a day to exercise.

Google more info or sum forum

  • The two most likely things are they want to play or you're surprising them. Ferrets naturally bite in response to being scared or just surprised. Do they have any treats they really like? Such as Ferretone or (just a tiny bit) peanutbutter? Try using that to lure them close. Something also may have happened where now they do not trust hands. That's much harder to correct a takes a lot of time to build trust again.

    Good luck

  • how long do you let them out for a day?

  • @justinge999 WHOA! once a month, they need to be let out 4 hours A DAY min.

  • I never let them out anymore, they stink and i'm not touching them, neither is my wife! Gosh i wish that woman hadn't dropped them off.... Do you know anywhere i can take them? I never even touch them, i fell bad about it.

  • the SPCA takes them, and i will if you live in vancouver lol.

  • @justinge999 aww :(

  • just choack them and theyl learn :)

  • You should see wich technique works for your FErret, because they are all different. I find the "Scruff, Shake + Drag" works for my little man. Google different ways because there are loads of ways you can stop your little fuzzbutt from nipping too hard :] Good luck!

  • I am sorry but, I have noticed that this lady although she tells some good info certain things she says is a little in accurate and videos to train people on how to train ferrets should be longer then 57 seconds.

  • Comment removed

  • I've had so many people with wrong ideas on ferret training: flicking it on the nose (ouch!), squeezing it about the middle, rubbing its nose in its filth, yelling "OW, ya bastard!" at it when it bites or scratches... I educate everyone who has an interest in ferrets because I hate to see them abused like that...

  • help me out than

i just got 2 and when they get extremely hyper and playful, they bite. do i HAVE TO KEEP GETTING BIT to scruff em?

  • No... the best trick I've learned is to scruff the ferret, and while they're scruffed, to pull them along the floor a little way. Not enough to scare the little guys, but just so they know who's in charge. They think they're the boss of you. :)

  • when i tried scruffing them they keep jerking around. and i hold them until they stay calm...but they never stay calm

  • i have used this technique for quiet a few years now. and it does work. it all depends on your ferret and the owner as to how they punish them. you can still scruff them to clip there nails because it does relax them. just reasure them that they havent done anything wrong after the nails are clipped and they will be fine. ferrets are fast learners and will know what is going on.

  • Basically, ferrets are just like little kids, make sounds like they've hurt you (exagerate a bit!), and they'll come and lick it better and feel sorry. Don't act angry, just hurt.

  • so true!!!! but clip it's nails when it's asleep, that works for me!!!

they never know were their nails went =)

  • ............. so when you cut there nails and clean there ears like that des it make them feel like there doing something wrong too ? cause that makes no sense

  • I thought the same thing. Cuz that's how I do it. I don't want him to think that I'm correcting him when I'm not.

  • lol you wanna no wats funny that one ddnt do anything lol

  • lol thats the black one is the ferret society..always getting punished for something it didnt do

  • most ferrets will usually bite harder when you scruff them. scruffing ferrets is typically used to relax them/calm them. or just to have a better grip on them when you are doing procedures, like nail clipping, ear cleaning, etc. scruffing is NOT a punishment, and anyone with any decent bit of education about ferrets knows that.

I would like to know where this woman got her education

  • hm when i want to scruff my ferret to clip her nails she bites me.

  • Apparently putting something like rotten apple juice or something that's not tasty on your fingers can help too, that way the ferret doesn't like the taste of your flesh :)

  • Just got my baby girl Zoe, she is seven weeks and bites anything that is flesh. My back, fingers, toes, etc. I don't know how to make her stop. The scruffing doesn't help either.

  • Young ferrets tend to nip more, even with the scruffing. You might want to try something like "bitter apple," which you can put on your exposed skin. It discourages ferrets from nipping you, because it tastes nasty.

  • Mine bites my arms and ankles :(

Funny thing is it doesnt bite my fingers at all??

  • ya mine to, i dont know why but i worry about my ferret because he seems to be biteing harder as the weeks go by, i dont want my ferret to hurt any of my cats (declawed) or anyone if he keep0s doing it and the sruff thing doesnt work for me should i bring him to the vet?

  • that is one of the worst ways to stop a ferrit from biteing the best way is to make a loud noise pick the ferrit up then put it in its cage leave it for an hour then it shows it it cant play when biteing.

  • an hour is too long, their attention span is shorter than ours. by the time an hour is up they have long forgotten why they were put on time-out,

however, if you are angry at them for the biting (trust e i have been there) haha, and you need the break, then of course, however long you need :)

  • Ferrets are a huge responsibility but great company. I have a 15 week old female and if you pick her up, she chops. I have had to have someone pry her off my finger 3 times when i tried to take something from her!

  • But is it hard having a ferret who has a great attitude?

  • No, but it's good to be informed about the qualities of a good ferret when you go to find one. My ferret is improving, to help the biting, handle your young ferrets alot, pick them lots of time. I had a ferret that was sweet and gentle he never bit. Boys are more layed back then females. Females are sassy and bite much more.

  • i just got a ferret last weekend. shes albino, and her name is Boba. She never bites she is really cuddly.

  • Some ferrets actually enjoy being scruffed. My sister had a ferret named Coal and he wouild bite and latch on. So, if we scruffed him, he wouldn't think anything about it and would keep doing it. To make him stop, we'd bite him gently on the ear as a warning, then give him a timeout if he did it again.

  • i like how they cut her off at the end!

  • yeah xD Its like "No more talkin!!!" -stops video-

  • poor ferret!

    it's probably thinking

    'y u scruffing me!!! i didn't do anything wrong!'

  • agreed. she mentions how it tells them they did something wrong as she's holding the poor hamster by it's scruff when it didn't do anything. :(

  • Ferret, not hamster. but i'm sure you know that! lol

  • haha, yeah, sorry, wrong word came out. :)

  • yea

  • why does she say her name and stuff all the time thats what she does to waste half the time

  • My husband and I recently bought a three month old ferret. We are trainning her not to bite (hard) by using both techniques (scruffing and/or caging). If she bites, she usually put her back in her cage for a couple of minutes and then bring her back out. We like this technique better than scruffing her. But they both seem to work.

  • when the ferret bites does it hurt? like will it seriously try to eat your finger lol or is it just playing around? and have u ever bleeded from it biting you?

  • LoL! I don't think a ferret would deliberately try to eat someone's finger. Naturally, ferrets play pretty rough with one another because they have thick skin. They don't know humans have more sensitive skin. They have to be taught that it hurts us (by scruffing or caging)

I know when I first got my ferret, she would play super rough. She bit my husband on his hand and made him bleed-but nothing serious. Just a little scratch.

  • oh i see, thanks for the info , i cant stand when something small with sharp teeth bites like a ferret or a rat or w.e... guess ill get used to it though cant be a puss bout it lmao

  • IA ferret thats not trained or know you makes you bleed and

My dad holded my ferret emma and She were about to take some of he's hand

but when you had your ferret a month or two It bites more gently if you spend a lot of time with your ferret

  • I'm not sure if I agree with this... ferrets should be scruffed if they need to be taken somewhere, or at the vet. So I would certainly never want being scruffed to be associated with something negative.

What worked for my ferrets when they were young is if they nipped while I was playing with them, I got up and stopped playing or put them in their cage if it persisted. Worked great, they dont nip at all :)

  • Hmm, pretty cool. Um...do you think, they can claw you or something?

  • They can get sharp claws but these should be trimmed regularly anyways. They defiantly don't run and attack you with claws though, like cats.

  • lol that ferret is probubly like wtf did i do?

  • not if you care for them right and they are descented.

  • or put hot sauce on your finger and a bowl of water next to you

  • now the ferrets confuzed

  • I know from experience that this does work, and scruffing a ferret (at appropriate times) is better than what some people do, such as hitting them or flicking their nose. That's just ignorance and cruelty.

  • No ferret moms have specialized teeth to scruff the ferret cuz if u scruff them alot their eyes can be permanantly damaged.

  • woot! It works!!! :O

  • if your ferret is biting too hard when you are playing i found the best thing to do it to bite them back when they are being too rough! dont literally bite them, but pinch ( not too hard!) them on the side until they stop biting. they usually jump round to see what was biting them! it is just teaching them boundary's. like if they bit another ferret too hard the other ferret would respond with a bite to say " hey that hurt! dont do it that hard or i will have to bite you hard!"

  • with my ferrets if they were biting for no reason, just being nippy, the best thing to do is to push your finger side ways into their mouth. ( not poking your finger down their throat, but pushing it across) this teaches them that having fingers in their mouth is not nice. they will try to push your finger back out again witch it good!

  • well i tried that with my ferret and it just hurts it!!

  • no its like getting told off, mother ferrets do that to their young if their being jackasses

  • She is so stupid Scruffing a ferret is wrong it will damage the ferrets eyes and it will keep on biting u should only tap the ferret once if s/he bites lightly but still hurts or twice if s/he bites really hard they hate getting tapped on the nose well it works for my friends ferrets

  • how do you figure that scruffing the ferret will damage its eyes? just wondering

  • Ferret mothers scruff them all the time.

  • When my ferret bites, I put it back in the cage and leave it there until he calms down. When I start playing with him again, he doesn't bite that hard...

  • i read that you arnt suposed to make your cage a time out you want them to think its a nice place so they dont freak when u put them in

  • the scruff thing does work but only on sum ferrets i tried it and it didnt work

  • i have 3 ferrets 2 the same age and 1 older 1 and all they ever did was fight and bite me or anyone else who tried to touch them but after a while they got used to me and if you handle them more they get used to u but ive found a way of making them stop bite you take the ferret that bites and u play with it but if it bites put it back and play with another one but do it in front of the one that bites and make it sees that the other ferret is having fun and if u keep doing dat it will stop biting

  • logical :p good thinking

  • I have no idea how to scruff my ferrets! Please help, can someone please make a video showing how to do it!

  • like a cat, it can be grabbed by the skin in the back of the neck. this is scruffing

  • their if fat on the back of their neck you grab it and it wont hurt them and it works cuz the person at the pet store told me its like what their moms do to show them they did something wrong. but the lady told me to wait till your ferret yawns then put them down idk but scruffing them works but mine bites really hard when hes hungry and when hes not he wont bite only nibble anyone know whats wrong with him?

  • I'm asking my mom for one, too.

I would say, act really responsible. Don't complain when you're asked to do chores, and look after any other animals you have.

  • I really want a ferret for my birthday (23rd sept) and I'm trying to convince my Mom, I think its working but I need help n what other things to say to her!

    Please help me !

    Thanks x

  • I got my ferret on July 3rd pretty direct from Marshall Farms, he was in Petco for maybe 2 hours from the time they dropped him and 7 other off until I picked him up, when I first got him he didn't stop biting, now that I handle him alot and pet him alot the biting is getting old to him because I put my fingers by his mouth and he got bored of biting and probably saw it didn't bother me. Although when I let him out to play he jumps and play bites like a manaic but it's only playing.

  • I got my ferrets from a shelter the vet estomated the male, Raymond, at 1yr and 1month, and the female, Queen, at a year. When I got them, I was completely aware of Queens agression, the problem is, it has been over a year, and she STILL bites. Today I went to pick her up, and she reached over and grabbed the palm of my other hand, when I scrufeed her, she just bit down harder. She broke the skin, and my mom is saying that unless it stops, she has bitten other people before and drawn blood, help?

  • im try RIDICULOOUSLY hard to get a ferret, but there are three things i need to know

    1. smell. they smeel bad but i heard its controlaable? how?

    2. Bathing, how do i bathe em?

    3. Cages, i need help? suggestions?

if i could get responded to by the 26th of july tht would be awesome, cause thats my bday, and i want one for mybday!, thanks so much , if get one ill thank all the users who helped via video and proly subscribe if they want THANKS!!!!

  • hi mate.

1.you can get a ferret neutered(castrated)at you local vet, this stops them smelling and makes them much less aggressive towards its handler.

2.you can bath a ferret in mild temperatured water in your bath tub at home, they dont usually like deep water and prefer just enough to cover there bodies.

3.i would recommend you buy a 2 tier(2 storey) cage maybe with ladders attached in the middle, i'd suggest around 5ft x 2ft to begin with and progress to a larger one as it grows.

  • Their is ferret shampoos out thier, you bathe them just like you would take a bath, warm but shallow water and always supervise them, and the best cage out thier right now is the Midwest Ferret Nation model 142, it's the safest cage for them and it has room for about 8 ferrets (I only have one ferret and he loves it) I'm looking for the 143 add on to give him 9 feet plus which is 3 levels)

  • A ferret play bites. They dont mean to and if you have controlled it then it wont hurt. Just scruffing my the neck doesnt work. You are meant to hiss at them just like their mother would do if they were bein a pain in the backside. Use toys to play with them, not your hands. Thats not mentioned it is. They can bite and toy and then wont bite your hand.I NEVER hold mine by the scruff. There is just no need esp if your ferret has been well handled and friendly.

  • does holding them by the scruff hurt them atall? cos i really want one but afraid of beig bitten lol ive heard it really hurts!

  • no,scruffing makes them relax,it doesnt hurt them at all.they are really good pets and when they bite its usually because they are playing or they are young or a combination of the two.

  • yeah it wil hurt wen they bite at first but the more you handle them the less they bite and if they dont get handled they do hurt lol wen my ferrets bite i open the jaw and put my little finger down its throwt sounds awful but it works this man at a ferret show told me and es got 78 soo lol you should get 1 there great and loving animals u can grab them by the scruff of there nek becuz u do that when you clean the ears anyway defo get 1

  • i want a ferret so bad i played with one at the pet store one day and it played kinda like my puppy and they are so cute but they are really expensive like a puppy even all the books i got were expensive lol but i think they are worth it they are such great creachers i want one

  • Bitter apple spray (available at pet stores) is a great addition to the teaching as it tastes bad and is safe for the ferret to ingest. This is just another reinforcement.

Ferrets take time to learn so patience is key! I've had 6 totally different ferrets, they all take different amounts of time to learn but they do learn!

  • I'm am extremely surprised the poster of this video did not explain more than this. Even basic ferret care books explain that you can't jsut scruff the ferret. This is only step 1 in the discipline process. Many ferrets are stubborn and require much more assertiveness before they learn.

Step 2 is to scruff the ferret and hiss at them. Ferrets are very vocal animals and They need a command or body launguage they understand. Hissing tells them "no" in their own launguage.

  • I was worried about hurting my ferret by doing this but when I did he didn't seem to mind, he just relaxed.

  • my farret is not agresive, and i cant doo this

  • Exactly thats how its done wrote hole 500+ words to tell that to some one who let it bite him.

  • to rabbit9454 (1 week ago) Show Hide Marked as spam 0 Reply | Spam ive had ferrets for over 40 years breeding and working them hope that ferret scrufs you one day to stop biteing put soap in its mouth every time it goes to bite after 2 or 3 times they will stop hope some one put soap in your mouth if u had ferret fourty year u are do no good your ferret u need report to rspca

  • to stop a ferret from biteing his to pick it up more ferret need to be hold up to 2 to 3 hours a day to stop it to princess i think you will find she in a shop not at home and u should not sale ferret in a shop full stop and u should not scruffing" all u need to do his pick up your ferret more and hold and say no to the ferret

  • If the ferret is biting alot then chances are it was not handled as a baby.Pet store ferrets dont get the handling say a private breeder would give. The "scruffing" might work..but with some ferrets this might not work.If the ferret still bites make sure it has had a full meal and put some lemon juice on your fingers and the biting may stop.Good luck!

  • ive had ferrets for over 40 years breeding and working them hope that ferret scrufs you one day to stop biteing put soap in its mouth every time it goes to bite after 2 or 3 times they will stop

  • aint that animal cruelty mate?
