By "one of the worst" I refer only to America's sustained military activity abroad - I would never attempt to rank the 'brutality' of one war-faring nation over another as you suggest, but any nation which maintains military activity outside its own borders is certainly more of an agressor than the nations which do no such thing.

By the time the bombs were dropped, the Japanese navy was pretty much destroyed, and it was not long before Japan was going to be defeated.

Basically the bombs being dropped saved the lives of American soldiers, at the cost of Japanese women, children and other citizens.

Hitler and Stalin were indeed ruthless. So why was it America waited so many years before joining the war, while watching as Britain fought off the Germans single handedly in the West, and the Russians East.

@Lordmark1234 america didn't have the resources or army size to be able to handle an overseas war, remember, this was the 40's, I think American assessed the threat by the means they thought necessary for the greater good, the nuke only killed 100K people which probably saved millions of potential american lives. and don't forget, Japan was warned ahead of time too so they could have prevented it. i don't really see the argument here though, war is war, it's either you or them...

There is no ethical or legal basis for such an act. It violated international law and the moral code of any civilized human being. Look at the uproar caused by 3K deaths in 9/11, and imagine how feeble your justifications would sound if said to you after your entire city and everyone in it had just been decimated.

I'm not going to pretend to be more of an expert on WWII than those who lived it, and in honesty it's not a subject I've re-evaluated in many years. My perspective on it is shifting as we speak.

I will say, though, that if I had to make a choice to either die or kill ONE human being who I do not know and who has never tried to harm me, I would choose to die.
