When your selecting the part you want to edit out should there be a little sound in it??

@awesomezebra It doesn't have to be. It might be some silence at the end of a track that you want to shorten. It would completely depend on the music and what you were trying to do.

what about if you found some great combat footage and some asshole put a song over the clip is there a way to remove the song while retaining the original sounds

@unhandledException1 Not sure of anyway to do this. It is difficult to remove sounds once they are all mixed.

@GSpeedEmotion Hey. If you zoom in on your samples with your +magnifying glass you can get down to the millisecond. You can edit what you like at that level.

@Omatunto people i was trying out this program and i just had the same problem... ALL GREY!!!! but by accident i found what i was doing wrong - i was PAUSING the song instead of STOPPING it, so i cant cut, paste, edit, etc... click the yellow square - stop - instead of the pause symbol, hope this is the same problem ur facing (im so stupid :P hope this helps someone - if so click like to help more ppl :D)

Ok, I don't get it. I had audacity for a while, and it worked perfectly. I opened it today, to import a file and delete a part of it. I select the area, and I can't press "cut". The option is not available. Nor is ANY other editing option for that matter. I tried delete, I tried everything! Any idea what the problem is? Heck, I tried reinstalling it, it still didn't work. I hope someone can help me. Thanks.

Ok, there's something weird going on with Audacity for me

Whenever I put a file in the program, when I play the file it makes a high pitched noise that lasts about two seconds, and I can never actually get a song to work. Any suggestions?

If you're taking the songs from iTunes, they're in .m4a format, which for some reason doesn't work. You need to find a way to convert them to .mp3 format before you can open them in audacity

I would recommend you add somewhere in there that you can't delete selections of music unless the audio has stopped playing.
