This video's pure awesomeness. Exactly what I've been looking for - a series of different kinda movable, jazzy chord shapes. Well explained but not all that useless craptalk. I just love u man. Thank u!
For the 6th string root chords. Is it okay to fret the low E with your thumb? I find it a fuck load easier than using my first finger, plus It frees up my 4th finger.
Thank you so much Justin, I really like the fact that you care to teach 8-10 good sounding chords instead of 100 useless clashing ones ( I've got one of the "million chords book" and it's total bullshit non-musical stuff ). You are a top teacher.
hey Justin, Thanks a lot for your teaching...is great...make my understanding of jazz theory a litlle bit easier...btw...what´s the tattoo on your left arm??? is it a "teonanacatl" (meat of gods?)...it´s nice...once again, thanks for your instruction....
i dont kno why people leave negative coments on justin`s lessons. it`s free and it`s probably the best lessons i find on the web. thanks for those usefull lessons Justin. that s juste wath i was looking 4.
I'm Tele fanatic and have set my guitar up very similar to yours.... and it sounds very jazzy on the minihummer. These workhorse guitars can do it all.. :)
I've played guitar for 30 yrs (Chicago blues and old rock) and have never delved into jazz. I knew some chord shapes for jazz that I use in blues because they sounded "right", but your videos are really helping me. I've been coming to you site for a few days now..... AND I LOVE IT! An "Old Dog" can learn new tricks!! You make it easy mate. Thanks so very much!
Hi, very good lesson, I feel. But I have a question: you often refer to numbers when desribing what your hands are doing. I know my basic theory, so I realize many times these numbers are NOT 1,3,5 etc or 1,flat 5 etc...so what are you refering to? If its intervals...from what to what? thank you for any reply.
It's the 7th? Only the notes C - E - B - D are in the chord. C-Root, E-Maj3, B-7th, & D-9th. Extended chords (9s,11s,13s) in jazz always have to have the 7th in it. Otherwise its a suspension. On guitar you also have to omit the fifth a lot in jazz chords like in this one, because you don't have enough fingers to play every single note that makes up the chord. Plus i think jazz chords sound better without the 5th. Hopefully this helps..lol
has anyone else noticed that the last few videos he doesnt where his hat and he looks a little upset .. or not at ease as he did before. and the back ground is different. i hope his wife didnt throw him out or something.. he just seems troubled compared to the first videos.. still awsume job teaching.. 5*
@ RodneySTR - thanks for the concern dude, but I'm 100% fine. Maybe even better than that. But I am busy as a one legged man in an arse kicking competition - so maybe just a little more tired than usual? New background is just the sofa in my studio.
Justin, you're the best teacher there is by far. I think I've learned more from your videos than any other method thus far out of 10 years of playing.
i know i'm not justin, but the best guitars for jazz are usually hollow body Gibson's, like an ES-335, but it depends what pickups are in the guitar, as Justin has a humbucker in the neck so it is not a standard tele
I did have a class at college for jazz guitar for about two weeks (had to drop it) and everyone there had hollow body guitars (mostly Epiphones) or nylon stringed acoustics. I showed up with my Epiphone Les Paul Custom and felt very out of place, lol.
Maybe if you go back try and get your hands on a Telecaster, and turn up to your class and be like "YEAH!" whilst you laugh at their Epiphones and Classical guitars because they would be inferior to your Telecaster! XD
Haha fair enough. Les Paul guitars are very nice, I wish I had one. I was tied between the American Telecaster and a Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty, but unfortunetly the Black Beauty is a little too expensive!
The Mickey Backer book is good, but I don't think a lot of things are explained well, and some of the chords are not practical, but there is some good stuff it in too... I liked it.
Why do you call the chords maj9, -11, etc.? I thought, there is only the major7-chord?

Hint: a major 6 chord equals a major 9 chord a 4th higher (no root). Ex. C major 6 = F major 9.

igonore that stupid-ass comment. What the hell. the 9 is the D. I guess it's actually a Cmaj7add9 but he's just calling it Cmajor 9.
sorry XD
Muzikman127 2 years ago
thanks!(even to Ramblingma247!)lol
Ogdoado 2 years ago
I'm pretty sure the notes in Cmaj9 are root, 3rd, maj 7th (B/little finger), and the 9th (D).
BlikeNave 2 years ago
a major 9 contains the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th [second] notes of the C Major Scale....
The B is the 7th note! [known at the Major 7th] - jope this helps
