I'm thinking of selling my brand new 550d + kit lens to buy a 40d + an L lens or a few lenses, do you think this is a good idea? The 550d feels too plastic-y and small for me, and i have no real need for HD video.. do you think its a good idea?? Thanks :)
I'm looking for my first DSLR camera to get really stuck into Photography and raise my understanding and skill. I had heard that lots of the top photography use this unit, but I was surprised to find it was 10.1 MP. I was worried that this wouldn't be good enough. I have looked into the 600D at 18MP, but the price is high and there's no 2nd LCD. Is this camera a good one to go for? Will it give me the quality I want? Would It be better to get a cheaper camera, and have money left for lenses?
@JedsReviews - Mega pixels don't equate to image quality, necessarily. Glass quality is what's going to really effect an images quality. If you watch pro sports, look at the photographers after the game, a lot of them are using Canon 1D Mark IIs and that camera only has 8 MP.
Do you know how well the ISO works above ISO 400? I'd like to get into sports photography and will need to use fast shutter speeds, which means higher ISO. How well does the higher ISO work? and the ISO compared to the rebel 550D?
@chicken80812 truth is your 550D has FAR better high ISO performance.
HOWEVER, the 40D should perform better at high ISOs than my 400D, so ISO 400 is relatively noise-free, and 800 is useable too. 1600 is useable too, if you can be bothered with post processing (if you shoot in RAW, removing noise is piss easy). But other than the fast framerate, your 550D is a superior body.
I have this camera and I am very pleased with it, but I got a sweet deal on a canon eos 1d mark2, and I am tempted. So, do you have any experience with the 1d mark 2 vs the 40D?
@ithree6mafia Carbon Polymer, in other words, Plastic. And also Magnesium Alloy on the inside. Both are weather sealed. But if you're thinking on a new semi-pro dSLR camera, go for the new Canon EOS 7D.
hey gordon! i rly need your help .. i'm swaying to and fro between the canon eos 40d and 50d. the 50d only costs about 50€ more than the 40d anymore so is that a GO for the 50d for sure? keep in mind that i'm also planning to buy lenses at the price of 300-400€ by brands like sigma or tamron so is then the 40d the better choice because of the 14mp of the 50d and those lenses wouldn't be profitable at a 50d? i've already read your reviews but couldn't find help there.. thanks in advance
thanks for responding (: appreciate that. so you think there won't be a difference if i'd put a 'standard' sigma lense on a 40d or a 50d? i just thought of perhaps not challenging a 50d enough due to it's 14mp or getting even worse image quality than on a 40d you know..
@r31ncarnat3d That's true but the 50D also has AF Micro-adjustment which in the long run makes it a better overall performer because it allows focus to be fine-tuned for twenty different lenses, negating issues with back- or front-focusing as well as Lens Peripheral Illumination Correction (also known as vignetting correction; vignetting is shading in the corners of an image). So, unless you use a split image viewfinder the 50D will constantly deliver more in focus images.
....I MIGHT get a 40d in march I have a nikon d3000 right now. (Very noisy) and if anyone knows where they have some great prices for the 40d tell me please. BTW what lens were that one the 40d in the video?
Luckily a swedish camera store Scandinavian Photo has come over a limited stock of 40d houses that they sell for 5995 swedish crona compared to Nikon d300 18495 swedish crona. I ordered one amidetly. I save a lot of money I am in heaven.
40d, but the 40d is no longer in production but you can find one cheap for second hand. the replacement for the 40d is he 50d which i think is overpriced and not as good as the 40d, the only thing better is the extra megapixels
any suggestions on where to purchase this model? I'm in SoCal, gonna try Samy Cams but couldnt find it searching their website. 50D a bit too pricey for me. thx.
Try a firmware update if you haven't done that for a while. If your image quality needs improvement then try a better lens. Say an L series model with the red ring, like the one in the video. Not cheap, but premium glass can make a world of difference in your photos.
almost the same? id ont know where youve been shopping but the price is considerably different and plus 40d is no longer in production but a few are floating around in leftover stock and second hand
450d is a lower end camera compared to 40d. *Better AF (All cross type). *Better build (Metal vs Plastic). *CF vs SD *Bigger body. *Better viewfinder. *Interchangeable focusing screens. *Better f/ps. *Bigger buffer. *Top LCD screen. *ISO 3200 Are in 40D's favour. However, 450D is smaller and lighter. But overall the 40D is in a higher class and a better camera overall.
in my opinion, get which you need. If you are doing more serious photography, and need something good but cant afford a 1ds mark III or 5d mark II, get the 40d.
If you are just using it for family snapshots or casual photography for yourself, get the 450d.
Don't get me wrong, the 450d can produce some fine images if you have good glass. The 40d is just a more advanced, semi pro sort of camera, while the 450d is more toward the entry level area.

can anyone help me im new to photography and i wanna buy a new camera but i dont no what to get i do lots of skateboarding photos but im only 15 so i dont have that much money probablyup to $600 australian any thoughts?
True, but it also has reduced battery life, and of course, the higher price point. I haven't decided yet, and will wait a little while longer. Some people actually prefer the 40D over the 50D. The 40D would more than fill my needs, but the 50D would be nice. :P
great vid!! do you know if the 40D will take my Rebel XTi lenses? (EFS), because today me and a friend tried to put one on a 10D and realized it wouldn't work.
No it doesn't - I'd have mentioned it if it did! The only current DSLRs with movie modes are the Nikon D90 and Canon 5D Mark II. See our reviews at cameralabs . com if you want all the details.
There's a lot of features to weigh up, so I'd recommend checking out the verdict pages of my Nikon D300 and Canon 50D reviews at cameralabs . com... then if you have any Qs, feel free to post on the cameralabs forums...
There's no way to keep up with the never-ending dual between Canon and Nikon. As soon as you buy "the latest", it becomes obslolete. I found that out when I researched the hell out of the 40d before buying it, only to find out a few months later it was made obsolete. Canon's motivation seems to be making money...not loyal customers.
The 40D is not obselete by any stretch of the imagination. The 50D does not replace it - it's a new model that's positioned above it at a much higher price. The 40D will remain on sale and remains a superb DSLR for the money. There'll always be new models though and the 40D is now a year old. If it bothers you to not have the very latest, I'd suggest visiting the cameralabs forums where rumours of new models are often discussed. You'll also find out when the trade shows are coming up...
thank u so much Gordan when i first watched this video i was like omg i love it so that day i started saving. i have now had the camera for about 10 months and there is not one regrett i love it so much
but im so tempted to now save up for the 50d
anyway thanks again for providing a GREAT video gordan
Thank you for providing the cameralabs site and video reviews, as they have been the most unbias and detailed source of information regarding digital cameras, i'm about to buy my first D-SLR A Canon EOS 40D, and hope to submit a few videos of my own. Again many thanks fot the information :-)
This camera takes Compact Flash cards, and the bigger it is, the more pictures you can take. So I would buy the biggest you can find/afford. Check the Canon website first though to see if there's a limit on the size.
Thank you so much for all your reviews, Gordon! It has been a GREAT help for newbies to SLR World like me. I just got the 40D camera and it is just awesome! I love this camera.
Yes you can. There should be a switch on the lens that says "AF/MF". Switch it to "MF" and then turn the ring on the end of the lens when you want to focus.
I still cant make up which cam to get though, since I am going to japan next month I could either get a canon KissX2 with the 18-55IS kit lens for 460€ or a 40D body for 540€! both from amazon. jp, so what do u think? which one would give me the most bang for my buck? thanks a lot!!
Hi, first of all check the verdict page of our 450D / XSi review at cameralabs . com to compare the features. Then I'd recommend picking them both up in person first to see which you prefer the look and feel of.
Yes I believe it comes with Mac software which also offers the same remote control facilities, but feel free to ask the 40D owners on the cameralabs forums for confirmation and more details.
i have seen the 40d with the ef 28-135 is lens at newegg for $1100.00 with the $200.00 doller rebate. the new xti is a nice camera also due to its smaller size. just remember the camera market is fixed, and your camera will be out dated in one year. the older canon xt is a great camera for its price, it was top rated when it first came out. i had very good luck with mine.
It depends on the camera and demand for it. It might sound odd, but you wouldn't want to keep them anyway. As I said, I've been testing them for 15 years, so imagine the technology museum I'd have if I'd kept them all! You'd have hundreds of them!
If you represent a publication that's recognised and known by the manufacturer, then they might lend you kit to write about. I should mention I have been reviewing cameras for over 15 years though, so the manufacturers know me pretty well!
Hi, the cameras are sent from the manufacturers to review. They do this for magazines and certain websites. As for the 40D and the Nikon's, yes it is bigger and heavier - you can compare the dimensions at the Cameralabs website.
I use this body as an intern! I am planning to purchase a 60D when I can.

@cameralabs I actually heard that the 50D has noisier pics than the 40D, especially at higher ISOs.
That's the biggest reason why I'm aiming for a 40D instead of a 50D.

Have you checked the High ISO Noise results pages in my reviews at cameralabs . com?
cameralabs 1 year ago
@r31ncarnat3d That's true but the 50D also has AF Micro-adjustment which in the long run makes it a better overall performer because it allows focus to be fine-tuned for twenty different lenses, negating issues with back- or front-focusing as well as Lens Peripheral Illumination Correction (also known as vignetting correction; vignetting is shading in the corners of an image). So, unless you use a split image viewfinder the 50D will constantly deliver more in focus images.

belly898 3 years ago
It's the Ef 24-105mm - I say that 30 seconds in!
cameralabs 3 years ago
gordon,,which one do you prefer? 40D or 50D? i can't decide lately by myself.. its very confusing.. any other suggestion anyone? thanks..=)
andretinongenso 3 years ago
It depends if ou want or need the extra features of the 50D - see my verdict page on my 50D review at cameraloabs . com...
cameralabs 3 years ago
I'm thinking of getting the 450D, but I gotta be sure... Does it work with macs?
SamarkandChan 3 years ago
It sure does, as does the remote control software.
cameralabs 3 years ago
Nice view from your house!
I'm thinking of getting the 40D, maybe the 50D, but personally I think they're pretty similar.
travers114 3 years ago
50D has far better screen (higher res) and a better sensor. If you don't mind it's higher price my advice is to get it instead of 40D.
Alsimair 3 years ago
True, but it also has reduced battery life, and of course, the higher price point. I haven't decided yet, and will wait a little while longer. Some people actually prefer the 40D over the 50D. The 40D would more than fill my needs, but the 50D would be nice. :P
travers114 3 years ago
great vid!! do you know if the 40D will take my Rebel XTi lenses? (EFS), because today me and a friend tried to put one on a 10D and realized it wouldn't work.
thanks!
S1Gequinox 3 years ago
Yes, they will work fine. The 10D was the only APS-C model from Canon which wasn't EF-S compatible - it came out before they invented EF-S!
cameralabs 3 years ago
allright, cool man.
appreciate your time!!

Thank you!

is it true that the eos 40d has a movie function like the nikon d90?
loganyorkdockery 3 years ago
No it doesn't - I'd have mentioned it if it did! The only current DSLRs with movie modes are the Nikon D90 and Canon 5D Mark II. See our reviews at cameralabs . com if you want all the details.
cameralabs 3 years ago
Someone hacked it to do it but Im not sure if I'd tamper with it if it were available.
all4golf 3 years ago
Accurate and good review. Thanks. Well, I still can't decide between Nikon 300d and Canon 40d. What would you choose?
essegerne 3 years ago
There's a lot of features to weigh up, so I'd recommend checking out the verdict pages of my Nikon D300 and Canon 50D reviews at cameralabs . com... then if you have any Qs, feel free to post on the cameralabs forums...
cameralabs 3 years ago
does this softwate come with the 400d? I would like to shoot time lapse, but not sure if i have the software.
Blid182 3 years ago
Gordon, when are you going to review the Canon 50D?
mwanichi 3 years ago
I just posted my review of the EOS 50D at cameralabs . com!
cameralabs 3 years ago
There's no way to keep up with the never-ending dual between Canon and Nikon. As soon as you buy "the latest", it becomes obslolete. I found that out when I researched the hell out of the 40d before buying it, only to find out a few months later it was made obsolete. Canon's motivation seems to be making money...not loyal customers.
frmoc 3 years ago
The 40D is not obselete by any stretch of the imagination. The 50D does not replace it - it's a new model that's positioned above it at a much higher price. The 40D will remain on sale and remains a superb DSLR for the money. There'll always be new models though and the 40D is now a year old. If it bothers you to not have the very latest, I'd suggest visiting the cameralabs forums where rumours of new models are often discussed. You'll also find out when the trade shows are coming up...

This comment has received too many negative votes show
I was SO close in switching to Canon when this came out, but I'm glad I didn't, the D300 and D700 SMOKES this camera!
No offense to any Canon users.
warrock556 3 years ago
ROFL ... that's equivalent to saying the 1Ds MKIII smokes the D300 and D700. LOL...

Well the 50D looks very promising, but the 40D is still a great camera! Check out cameralabs . com later today for a comparison of their features...

Hi Gordon
Thank you for providing the cameralabs site and video reviews, as they have been the most unbias and detailed source of information regarding digital cameras, i'm about to buy my first D-SLR A Canon EOS 40D, and hope to submit a few videos of my own. Again many thanks fot the information :-)

whats a good memorory card for this camera
GETonMYlevel323 3 years ago
This camera takes Compact Flash cards, and the bigger it is, the more pictures you can take. So I would buy the biggest you can find/afford. Check the Canon website first though to see if there's a limit on the size.

Thank you so much for all your reviews, Gordon! It has been a GREAT help for newbies to SLR World like me. I just got the 40D camera and it is just awesome! I love this camera.
domenus 3 years ago
Oh my. I seriously want that camera.
KiloByte69 3 years ago
Gordon, can you do manual focusing on Live View? and is the Live View mode slow enough to cause camera shake?
I read your verdict page about this btw=D
Your reply will be deeply appreciated like before...
ryanracca 3 years ago
Yep, all the details you want are in the features pages of this review at cameralabs . com - not just the verdict page!
cameralabs 3 years ago
Oh ok, I'll check it again...
Anyway, my family already decided to buy the 40D:)):))YAY!
ryanracca 3 years ago
Yes you can. There should be a switch on the lens that says "AF/MF". Switch it to "MF" and then turn the ring on the end of the lens when you want to focus.
gaz52 3 years ago
I already have my 40D and I knew that last month(when i bought my 40D)
Thanks though ^_^
ryanracca 3 years ago
Hey Gordon, thanks for your videos!
I still cant make up which cam to get though, since I am going to japan next month I could either get a canon KissX2 with the 18-55IS kit lens for 460€ or a 40D body for 540€! both from amazon. jp, so what do u think? which one would give me the most bang for my buck? thanks a lot!!
shallowlife 3 years ago
Hi, first of all check the verdict page of our 450D / XSi review at cameralabs . com to compare the features. Then I'd recommend picking them both up in person first to see which you prefer the look and feel of.
cameralabs 3 years ago
Thank you Gordon!, I also asked my questions in your forum and the nice people over there provided great help!
shallowlife 3 years ago
Excellent review!
Is there any possibility that you can make a comparison between the EOS 40D vs. Nikon D80??
carva822 3 years ago
Hi, I've compared them in the verdict of the 40D review at cameralabs . com.
cameralabs 3 years ago
So the 40D is way better than the 450D?
ryanracca 3 years ago
It's more professional... see the verdict page of our 450D review at cameralabs . com for a comparison.
cameralabs 3 years ago
Oh, but I have another question...
Since I'm just a hobbyist, what would you recommend for me?
I just need the ff.:
Faster fps
10 megapixels and above
Live View
ryanracca 3 years ago
40D semi-pro DSLR camera, 450D consumer-mid grade DSLR. Both are high quality cameras, more depends on your level of talent, budget, so on.
yomi1896 3 years ago
can you do a review on the 30D? =]

Hi!
Nice videos! I've seen alot of them and reading reviews on your site.
Just one quick question:
How do you activate the auto focus in LiveView mode? You said that had already activated the auto focus in the menu...
i cant find it!
rvenes 3 years ago
Hi, see the 'screen and menus' section under Features in our 40D review at cameralabs . com for all the Live View details...

Hi Gordon.
I've watched your videos for a long time, but I had a quick question if you find some time. Will the 40D software also work for a Mac OS system?
Thanks for all your help!
MagicMan135 3 years ago
Yes I believe it comes with Mac software which also offers the same remote control facilities, but feel free to ask the 40D owners on the cameralabs forums for confirmation and more details.
cameralabs 3 years ago
i have seen the 40d with the ef 28-135 is lens at newegg for $1100.00 with the $200.00 doller rebate. the new xti is a nice camera also due to its smaller size. just remember the camera market is fixed, and your camera will be out dated in one year. the older canon xt is a great camera for its price, it was top rated when it first came out. i had very good luck with mine.
patrick95240 3 years ago
I'm a professional reviewer, not a pro photographer! I've posted some photos in the cameralabs forums, but so far there's not many of mine online...
cameralabs 3 years ago
The models I'd recommend can be found in the Best Buys section at cameralabs . com!
cameralabs 3 years ago
great review! thx!
lhmodel 3 years ago
It depends on the camera and demand for it. It might sound odd, but you wouldn't want to keep them anyway. As I said, I've been testing them for 15 years, so imagine the technology museum I'd have if I'd kept them all! You'd have hundreds of them!
cameralabs 3 years ago
They go back to the manufacturer and get lent to another publication.
cameralabs 3 years ago
so me here. i can't ask to use one for a demonstration ?
MGrammatico 3 years ago
If you represent a publication that's recognised and known by the manufacturer, then they might lend you kit to write about. I should mention I have been reviewing cameras for over 15 years though, so the manufacturers know me pretty well!
cameralabs 3 years ago
Hi, the cameras are sent from the manufacturers to review. They do this for magazines and certain websites. As for the 40D and the Nikon's, yes it is bigger and heavier - you can compare the dimensions at the Cameralabs website.
