  • Hi! I'm Roberto an italian member of Byzantine armies I'm DECARCA a byzantine officer that have the command of a line of battle of byzantines. This video is very old, 5 years ago about. Now we have the better shields and swords, and the normans are the Vikings of Hastings. The last battle of Taranto was been very GREAT! With archers too. For any information of this event or more contact me on my Facebook page my name is ROBERTO ANGELO OTTINI. Bye!

  • Who Inspired this reenactement of history ,congradulations How did you find all this people to participate? I am amazed. next year let me now the date and i ll come of course in the Byzantine side winning or loosing

  • this is no fun people are not dying

  • Byzantines had lost in Italy mainly politically as local people finally turned their favour to Normands. Previously locals of Sicily played between muslims and Byzantines. In 11th century also a huge part of the (Hellenic origins) population was taken (quite with force) to be placed in Greece to replace the slaughtered Greek populations by the Bulgarian raids. This highly depopulated the area, especially of its pro-Byzantine element (Greeks), so Normand conquest was easened.

  • Also Normands appear around 1050 at a time where the Empire is practically left without an army as the Komneni family work to deconstruct the military machine of the Empire and want to be based mainly to mercenaries. Therefore Normands have it easy in Italy and even invade Greece, win a first victory against a rural army but finally loose terribly in the second batte. I would say overall Normands-Byzantines a draw but then I do believe that after 1017 all Byzantine armies are rather crap.

  • Funnily Byzantines use a lot of Varangians, cousins of Normands. I wonder if Normads remembered their ancient languages and spoke some during the battle against the Varangians of the Byzantine side!

  • (albeit those Varangians were Rus, thus highly mixed with Slavic people too).

  • come on you byzantines!!!!!
