The past is a different country. People got culture shock when they heard the music of the future. That's all. It was not of its time so the people of the time didn't get it.
@WELLBRAN: Miles's goal was to make contemporary Jazz that would appeal to young Black people of the day. The music, and the album cover, was drawn from cultural elements of the day to appeal to the young and hip.
@markallenkellner Interesting side-note: the wah pedal was originally designed to emulate the effect of applying a mute to a trumpet or other brass instrument, specifically the wah-wah or Harmon mute. Miles also used this type of mute. But just to be clear, I think the other commenters are correct that he used a wah-wah pedal on these recordings.
@TokenRah He just didn't take his time putting it together right. The "soul clap" is used so much, that it begins to sound like a gimmick. The tabla and the "diminished chord" (with the leading 1/2 step) horn hook, are what make this tune masterful, in my opinion,
@TokenRah: Jazz critics of the day were stuck in the acoustic age. Their constant carping ensured that the great age of Fusion was short-lived and that later musicians to take up the genre have largely gone unrecognized in this country.
coolest album ever...OK one of the coolest lol

I can't believe people thought this was one of his worst albums. Its a masterpiece and so ahead of its time.
