  • Press 8 a bunch for a continuous snare roll.

  • youre kit sounds perfect!! amazing

  • I love this sort of stuff. I have nothing but complete respect for these type of musicians. Some might call it technical wankery but fuck that. I write technical music too and for me it's just my musical self expression. I don't do it to feel superior to 4/4 bands. I do it because it's what I want to do. It's what I want to write as a musician.

  • why would someone put a guitar track over that drum solo?

  • Cover a song by the band Hella.

    Then I'll really be impressed.

  • 5:00

    ...0.0

  • its funny to see how butt hurt people get about words on a screen. if u dont get it then get off it. just music people , be happy we have it !!!!!!

  • Mindblowing... Serious skills. You guys sound very similar to Panzerballett

  • I'm 42 and a Slipknot fan, so I resent all the typical Slipknot bashing bullshit. Yea, they sure have some loser immature fans, but so do fans of tech/math/prog/death. Hey, I like Slipknot, but I also love techy proggy death. A Slipknot fan says they're the best, and it get slammed as "immature loser comment". A fan of tech/death says it's the best and it comes across as elitist bullshit.

You CAN like Slipknot AND Arctopus and NOT be afraid to admit it, without bashing the other.

    I like'm both

  • @zedchuva Agreed. The "elitist bullshit" is really starting to piss me off. Music is not all about being technical and complex. There are bands that have followers that consider themselves and the band "elite", when in reality the band is just a bunch of crap. These "elitists" consider anything mainstream and not technically advanced to be bad music. They also like bands based on what other "elitists" think of them, instead of branching out and forming their own opinions.

  • @zedchuva Well spoken :)

  • rock on dude! i'm sure kristin and mattie enjoyed it! ( a k a, this is your little cousin elizabeth!) :)

  • obviously we.re just listening to the recording while he's playing synched, but He missed a snare hit at 3:44 :( ........... but other than that absolutely amazing

  • This must take a while to memorize.

  • Hi Charlie, fine drumming, you asked to contct me, DB, put note on my youtube

  • Awesome playing, very bad camera work.

  • I vote this guy for the vacant drummer spot in Dream theater!

  • Dear Charlie, it's your cousin Elizabeth!! I never knew you were so good at the drums!! You should be a famous drummer!! hugs and kisses, Elizabeth. You Rule!

  • @TheTootsieroll31 he is a famous drummer already

  • Go apply with Dream Theater!

  • Brain hurt, words cant find right....Awesome.

  • I don't think this is possible. It can't be real.

  • I'm not quite sure what I just heard. Definitely not my cup of tea, to put it bluntly. I guess you have to appreciate the technicality, though.

  • What are those metal things on the high hats?

  • @MassacreTheGods It's called a ribbon crasher.

  • @TheForgotton Ah, thank you. Sounds amazing!

  • Just found my Berklee audition piece.

  • man this drummer is so sick. people should check the band blotted science that he's in also.

  • All the stupid drummer wannabes who cover songs from such lame bands like Slipknot (just watched one of those) should watch this and then kill themselves.

  • @soullessSiIence Better still, watch this and have a revelation that perhaps they should work to remedy the severe shortage of GOOD drummers in the world compared to other common band instruments.

  • @theystoleitfromus the problem is they think Joey Jordison is the best drumer in the world and no matter what you say they'll praise him. I bet 99% of people that play any instrument didn't study at a conservatory or a college-level (don't know how to say that in english) music school.

  • @soullessSiIence I suppose. In that case, have Joey watch this and weep.

  • @soullessSiIence

You should calm down, bro. Who cares what they play?

  • @PaganWarDrummer Apparently, 7 people + me care.

  • @soullessSiIence

Wow, imagine that, eight music elitists on the internet at one time. Spending all your energy complaining about what they do will take away from the focus of what YOU do, which should be the single most important thing ever. Besides, if everyone played awesome music like this, it'd magically become mainstream, and eventually, boring. I'd rather keep feeling as if I'm part of something special by listening to music not a lot of people know, thanks.

  • @PaganWarDrummer Hipster alert...

  • @LynkxMan

I'm willing to let you pretend that you have any idea of what you're talking about if you're willing to accept the fact that your hipster alert needs a tune-up.

  • @PaganWarDrummer "listening to music not a lot of people know" is a very diluted form of being a hipster, given that a hipster would be "listening to music NOBODY knows". Chill dude. It was a joke

  • @soullessSiIence a little over the top... maybe they could just quit drums and join other professions?

  • @soullessSiIence im no slipknot fan but its an unfair comparison. Charlie zeleny is full time professional drummer who played in behold arctopus which u prolly know is a math/progressive metal band. Which is like comparing thomas haake n chris pennie to amateur drummers who post covers on youtube. its a pretty stupid comparison if u ask me

  • @soullessSiIence Lame bands? It's totally fine taht you have your opinion, but please do keep it to yourself next time. This music right here is lame, unthoughtful and as far from making sense as possible. You sir, could very well be, a dumbass. Good day

  • @Tdrahdnil I have to agree with soullessSilence on this one. Slipknot is definitely a lame band. I much prefer their music to Behold... The Arctopus, but they are a very lame band as far as image and members and gimmick are concerned.

  • @Tdrahdnil

This music is lame and unthoughtful? Excuse me while I laugh mockingly for many hours.

  • @Tdrahdnil unthoughtfull? its fucking offbeat jazz + modes and scales in total variety. Yes its not standard composing. The thing here is to take it as a technical act. And before calling people dumbass, please explain what composing method, phrasing and runs you want to classify" as sense in the world of music. That is probarly the most dumbass comment i have seen for a long time.

  • @soullessSiIence Oh yeah? Watch this >:B

    *Blast beats* YaAhAhAhAhAhAhAhAhAhAhAhAhAhAhAh!!!

  • jesus shit this is godly

  • How do you do that? Like seriously how the fuck do you do that?

  • As a Canadian (Ontario Born and Raised) Drummer, I love the archaic amain portrait you paint all over that drum kit of yours!!!

  • is the ride a paiste signature dark metal? if i'm wrong, what ride do you use in the vid??

  • Perfectly describes Canada in a nutshell. (FYI, that's where I live)

  • :o OMG!!!

  • I dont care what anyone says but that solo bit from 3:46 to 4:00 is sweeeeeeeeeeeet.

  • @Diomenesx I doubt anyone would disagree with you, but given that this is a drummer feature, you'd expect people to pay more attention to the drum solo immediately before that. I say so as a guitarist myself, too.

  • This is just absolutely great!

  • Great!

  • i feel bad this guy has to be with the most shittiest band out there

  • @RockstarDaniel Lol, he quit to become a session musician. He played with Behold.. the Arctopus because he wanted to. He's good enough to get into any band.

  • @RockstarDaniel The only people who think Behold... the Arctopus sounds shitty are the people who don't understand anything about music theory and can only appreciate the aesthetic, superficial aspects of music.

  • @standdownman an artist can understand music theory more than any other artist and still make terrible music sure he can write a melody and know how to harmonize it it still doesnt mean its good music

i myself somewhat understand music theory yet this is still terrible music in MY OPINION charlie seleny is still a great drummer

  • @RockstarDaniel Yes, you think music is only about melody and harmony. Your understanding of music theory is incredibly limited. Either way, this music is filled with harmony and melody, if you have an ear to hear it. They utilize both harmony AND dissonance and in some cases, manage to paradoxically combine the two. It just sounds bad to you because you don't understand it.

  • i never said that what i think music theory is theres a bunch of stuff i have yet to comprehend just because you understand something doesnt mean you should accept it or acknowlege it as something great

but yes my understanding of music theory is VERY VERY limited ive only been studying it for a short while and im pretty sure the very few people who listen to this understand music theory

  • @standdownman OMG he did a scale this is the best song ever no im pretty sure not many people would consider it good music. music isnt about music theory you can make beautiful music and still not know what your doing

listening to this makes my ears want to commit suicide.

YOU HAVE YOUR VIEWS I HAVE MINE let this go

  • @RockstarDaniel All you hear is scales? Haha, thanks for proving you know nothing about music.

  • @standdownman its like your not reading what i have typed at all

ive already said i know very little about music theory

regardless this is pretty bad and you know it

  • @RockstarDaniel You admit to knowing little about music theory, yet you think you still have the right to say this is objectively bad music? Sorry, kid. It's bad to you because you can't hear it. It's like a blind man accusing the world of being ugly. Of course it's ugly if you can't see anything. You just can't hear the beauty in it. Keep listening to music and maybe one day you'll get it. I recommend listening to different genres, classical and jazz especially. Fine-tune your ear for music.

  • @standdownman

music theory does not make a good song

    let alone an average song

  • @RockstarDaniel You don't know what you're talking about.

  • @standdownman

    i do

obviously you do not know what an opinion is

  • @RockstarDaniel You obviously don't know what objective music theory is.

  • @standdownman

    i dont

  • @RockstarDaniel Therefore you're in no place to say this is bad music. You can only say it SOUNDS bad to your untrained ear.

  • @standdownman

    mozart

    berlioz

    and brahms

would not be great if theyre music sounded like this

  • @RockstarDaniel Yeah, and they wouldn't sound great as a metal band. This isn't trying to be classical. This is new. This is experimental. Fuck, in terms of genres, they're pretty much polar opposites. However, this music borrows heavily from classical, jazz, world music, and pretty much every genre. This is a sound like no other. Just because it doesn't sound like what you've been told is good doesn't mean that it's automatically bad.

  • @standdownman and now you understand what an opinion is

  • @RockstarDaniel And now you understand why your opinion means nothing.

  • @standdownman

you make it sound like your in this shitty band

  • @RockstarDaniel You make it sound like you have no idea what you're talking about.

  • @standdownman

so why do you care if i dislike this band and call this shitty music

id like to know since im ignorant

  • @RockstarDaniel Because you're spreading misinformation.

  • @RockstarDaniel dude you've got no idea what your talking about, all u might hear is bad sounding music but listen closer.

just because its a fuck load more technical than other metal bands that doesnt make it bad, and as for beautiful listen to 2:15 on words.

this is expressive music rather than trying to appeal to a bunch of 13 year old slipknot fans

  • @RockstarDaniel Not all people like to listen to jazz as well do they? you should just respect the variety of different taste. Thats what it all is about. If some people find technique a bit more interesting than harmonic composing, then respect that and understand that its a matter of taste, nothing more. If it makes your ear bleed, then go listen to something else ffs. How hard can it be.

  • i like alaska by between the buried and me better

  • @Jakethysnake93 BTBAM is good, but not this good.

  • Savage drumming man.....Excellent......

  • possibly the best drummer in extreme metal

    ever

  • @RPExecutor nah that would be george kollias i guess

  • If you can't understand this, then your listening to too many simple beat, simple riff, 4/4 time songs that go verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus. It gets boring!

  • @ggplox compleeeetely agree. i'm getting so tired of listening to regular music. after i started listening to btbam it completely changed the way i listen to music. i love this kind of stuff, and i agree these guys are incredibly talented, but i'll admit i don't think i'm ready for them just yet

  • holy shit. i thought i couldnt find more fucked up than blotted science... this is beyond my expectation XD its cool tho hahahah

  • It's not that these guys aren't talented.

It's the fact that it just doesn't sound that great.

Blotted Science is great, and very complicated too.

But they don't forget to make the music appealing, wich is a talent on it's own.

In the end taste is personal, but alot of people that are into progressive/technical music don't really like behold the arctopus for a reason.

For my it's the same as bands like psyopus... sure it's technical, but it just doesn't flow that well musically.

  • surely theres isnt much "appeal" but thats the beauty. this is stuff very few people can play, and quite honestly if i had a choice id choose technicality over appeal, besides,,, that weeds out all the fucking wannabe teen musicians who think they are cool because their listening to metal.

  • I think you need to achieve a balance of appeal and technicality.

Knowing what people enjoy hearing and writing drum parts that fit the song is a talent.

    Playing technical stuff requires talent.

I'd pick appeal over technicality anyday, but most technical stuff is appealing to me because I drum myself.

A good musician, in my opinion knows his place. And luckily in most metal that place isn't limited. But when you're drumming to a groovy blues band you aren't gonna pop out blast beats.

  • agreed. blues is another beast though haha

  • @Orancube I guess it's all subjective. Every time I listen to Behold The Arctopus I want to cry because I think it's all so brilliantly constructed.

  • psyopus, yeah they don't flow well at all but behold the arctopus does

  • he makes it look so easy!

  • I love how he uses his pedals.

Doesn't overdo it, but doesnt just keep time with them, he knows that the odd meters are not enough to make the drumming interesting on their own, but he also knows that he's in a band, and he's not doing one big long loose jazzy solo

  • what was he hitting at the end of the song, it looked like two pieces of metal....?

  • hey ho lets go

  • this music scares the living shit out of me.

  • it makes it more ridiculous for you. some people like it and it is stupid of your part to see things only with your opnion

  • awesome drumming,

    can't abide the music however

  • @RutboyNiles Well done mate, seeing talent, dispite not actually liking the music puts you a good many steps above the majority of the youtube community. Props for not being a narrowminded twat :]

  • dayum do u hear the bass guitar. thats ridiculous

  • its actually a 12-string Warr Guitar. it kinda makes it even more ridiculous...lol

  • Gotta love those PAISTE cymbals:P

Behold The Arctopus is and awesome band... Dunno why so many people don't like them.

  • @NicholasJamesWells So many people don't like them because they just do not "get" or understand them.

  • they dont understand them

  • It's because people just don't understand how incredibly talented these musicians actually are... Indoctrination of the masses.

  • thank you. people like the easy shitty stuff

  • This is jazz-infused metal. Listen to the distortion tone, the chord progressions... This isn't easily classified as metal (in my opinion it's technically more intense and more 'inner circle' musicianship), but it is.

  • nicely put

  • Thanks. :)

  • man you fucking wish you could play half as good as those guys

  • dude shut the fuck up.....you dont know me or what im about all i said is that the talent should be used so that it doesnt come off gay....what did his parents not like metal so hes like whats your favorite music mom? oh jazz well its gay but ill do it for you mom.........your all fucking queer if you listen to this bullshit you like to call music now get off my nuts just cuz i offended your pretty little jazz-infused metal

  • your a faggot go rape a turtle

  • AMAZING JOB MAN! I'm trying to learn this. It aint easy. Amazing dynamics, everything was super clean. Hats off to you.

  • cool shit, i dig it

  • A totally stunning display of technique and skill..... But as much as I love 70s prog and mainstream prog metal most of that just sounded like a load of random notes chucked together. A bit like impro jazz- definitely an acquired taste. Still great chops though.

  • What? Has he left Behold.. The Arctopus?

Hands down one of the most impressive technical-wise drummers out there in my opinion.

What kind of percussive device is it next to the Hi-Hat? He's using it at the end of the song, at his drum solo, at about 5:23. Anyone?

  • He left B...TA in December 2008.

  • I'm not sure if it has a formal name, but it's just long strips of sheet metal piled on top of each other. Same jarring metal sound as a hi-hat, but a lot less resonant.

  • Yea he left the band, The thing next to the high hat are like 2 little pieces of metal and they have these little thin metal circles that float free on top of them, i'm sorry I can't explain it better I don't know the name, I've seen them at guitar center if you have one near you.

  • behold... the arctopus.

    FTW!

  • that fill at the end just rotted my brain, turned it to shit

  • @nick122122123

    lmfao.

  • It gets pretty technical from 1:03 to 1:06

  • Hahaha

  • WHY THE HELL DID HE LEAVE B...TA?! :(

  • you wouldnt get laid in a band name behold the arctopus and have song names like that. lol

  • you wont get laid playing music, you get laid by hanging around slutty girls.

  • @NapoleanXV that is incorrect sir. girls love musicians. so they will have sex with them. and why would you wanna hang around sluts? . they could have aids or herpes. plus. if youve got a girl thats clean and loves music. your good.

  • @raptorjesus223 correction, girls like bad musicians.

  • @raptorjesus223 Really? A girl should have sex with a musician just because he is talented? Any girl that's willing to give up the pussy to a guy she doesn't know, musician or not, is a dirty slut. You seem to have twisted morals.

  • @ACMAaron THATS NOT WHAT IM SAYING. im saying if you have a girlfriend. and she loves music. and your a musician. and you both love music. its awesome. thats what im saying. smart one.

  • @ACMAaron thats why i added the "why would you wanna hangg around sluts?"

  • I love this stuff. Little room for improv, sure, until you play that style for a bit. It's a ridiculous display of memory skill, and that kind of challenge to me is very impressive. Ummmm five stars.

  • i don't get this music...

  • Don't worry about it.

  • math metal must be very funny to play

  • It's actually pretty painful to play. There's very little room for improve, and you have to memorize the parts down to the last note, or you will get off.

  • I hate to play this stuff, too

  • Yes, but when you're Charlie Zeleny or the genius of Colin Marston, there's nothing to worry about =D

  • let me guess, is this song "canada" the sequel to the song "alaska" by between the buried and me? (i know its not, but read this a few times and ull get the joke)

  • Prequel to the Sequel. I see what you've done there xD

  • lol

  • your mother

  • I really doubt that somehow. Listen to Blotted Science or Behold.. The Arctopus, then compare that with the (non) technicality of soilwork's music.

  • Yeah maybe your right.

  • he is.

  • You lack the level of comprehension to like this music. Thanks.

  • 1. He's not in BTA anymore.

    2. He WAS in that band because he has a basic knowledge of musical mechanics and theory and realizes how fantastic Colin and Mike are.

If you can't understand it, don't discredit it as "shitty". Admit your ignorance and go on with your day.

  • most sensible comment i've ever heard so far regarding BTA

  • Blotted Science is amazing. What do you consider "good"?

  • Porn grooves.

  • wa ascoltando il disco dei blotted science sembrava piu bravo invece questo video mi ha fatto ricredere sinceramente...........

  • who the hell are they gonna find to replace him?

  • No idea, on myspace they say " need a fast drummer" but they need more than fast

  • hes one of my fav drummers

he kinda plays like a mix of blake richardson, tomas haake, and mike portnoy

  • how the hell does he remember what to play wen

  • I know, he's insane, better than portnoy? discuss :P

  • just as good but not as well known.

  • The second half of this song is amazing.

  • Ride hit at 1:55: intentional or accident? Discuss.

  • That's intentional. It's a whole new drum pattern.

  • u mean at 0:55? i'd label that accident lol

  • Not a bad video either. You're the best Charlie.

  • They didn't copy shit from the Faceless.

  • sound more like Blotted Science

  • You, sir, are a retard.

  • this isn't off beat at all, it just changes tempo ALOT. And it's got alot different time feels.

  • I just enjoyed that whole video. He looked like he just loved playing it!
