This video was very helpful. I have everything put back together except I cannot get the ribbon cable reconnected to the hard drive. Any suggestions for putting the cable back in? Thanks.
@timluck there is a little tab on the back of the connector, make sure its in the up/out position slide in the cable and then press the tab down and in, that locks it into place.
Wow! Great vid! Did you upgrade the HDD of replaced it with the same type? Is it possible to put an 80g HDD or more into a Zune that is manufactured with a 30g?
@Eddyatusabe I would say try putting a dot of super glue on an item and placing it on the top of the broken jack, wait until it hardens well and try pulling it out. You may also try taking apart your zune and then pushing it from the other side of the head phones port
@Eddyatusabe ok thats easy. all you gonna need is 1 or two needles and a lighter. you simply burn the sharp tip of the needle until it is really hot then press it through the broken jack thats stuck. then wait few second until it dries the u can pull it off easily.
when you boot it up it may go into recovery mode, if you hear a clicking that is repeated over and over in the exact same pattern it may also be dead of dieing, random clicking while seeking information is ok.
@Zenodilodon ok well my 4 gig just wont turn on and wont respond to the charger or computer...it was working fine and then i turned it off and 10 minutes later tried to turn it back on and it didnt work...do you have any idea what is wrong???
That's an odd one, I don't think it's a hard drive issue, 4 GB unless it's a micro drive it's most likely flash memory. It might be altogether dead maybe from a short. There is a common problem with ipods and zunes and having pocket change since the ports are so wide some coins slip in the docks and short them out. You would have to give me more information on what happened in those ten minutes. location time of year items around it, anything it's kind of like a crime investigation.
You may have just locked up the firmware. if this happens it's like a computer that's frozen unlike a laptop pr desktop you just can't turn it off. Zune and other common MP3 players never really turn off they more just go into standby. You can wait for the battery to run out " it would be a while " of you can try and remove the battery, wait a few seconds and reconnect it. you may also want to look up pad combos I think center+down held for a few second is manual restart.
@Zenodilodon ok i tried the bitton combos but later ill try the battery thing,,,it did this so i ended up getting a 30gb like the one in thid vid...i just wanted this one as a backup
my bad i got the same model zune as you and i bought it for cheap off eBay and im wondering if it was cheap cause of the bad hard-drive so im asking is the hard drive just bad on yours or all the zunes with the same model # as yours??
I have. No joy. Rapid repair have a completely pointless guide that says 'insert thin plastic tool inbetween the case and pry it open' they don't even say where
You can buy them off of e-bay, note for this model it can only support an allocated size of 30 GB, But you can purchase a drive thats 30 GB for about $40-$60 of of ebay new, and used drives for much cheaper.

@yournotjohn I had some issues with the 30 gb zune reading all 80 gbs, a direct replacement of 30 gbs is more stable.

What screw driver are you using??

All you need for this is a single small precision phillips screw driver. This can be bought almost anywhere.

I hate how there are millions of these on every type of zune other than the 120 I have.
that has no screws on! How do I get it? (mines broken and I live somewhere were they weren't officially sold).
EGshlimAJ 2 years ago
Your Zune does not have screws under the little clip on the bottom?
Zenodilodon 2 years ago
nope, the clip isn't there, it's just the port for the usb lead. They changed the design for the 120 even though it looks exactly the same.
EGshlimAJ 2 years ago
thats really odd, you might want to google how to open zune model 120 before trygin to open it

EGshlimAJ 2 years ago
Due to the headphones port you star on the 2 sides close to the bottom and work out way up to the top corners, it's about the safest way to do it.
