Time to address the myth that we can develop our own resources and sell them amongst ourselves. Who is going to buy them? There isn't much demand here. We generate far more electricity, chop more wood and produce more paper than the 690000 peoplee in our region (including Sudbury and North Bay) could ever use. To create a demand for all of our resource, we would have to force locals to buy extra. Because of the low demand, prices would plummet and the local companies would go out of business.
Best well known politicians of the 20th and 21st century: 1) Margaret Thatcher 2) Lester B. Pearson 3) John Diefenbaker 4) Mike Harris 5) Lyndon B Johnson Worst Politicians of that time period: 1) Pierre Elliot Trudeau 2) Richard Nixon 3) Dalton McGuinty 4) George W. Bush 5) Stephen Harper Anyone want to debate this?
"And remember, the government always has the best intention for their citizens, including the G20. This is an advertisement paid and sponsored by the Liberal Party of Canada."
@NotjustGrey The Liberals knew there was a deficit when they took power. They proceeded to quadrouple it in the space of a couple of years, and now have spending simply out of control, and accomplishing nothing.
I yearn for the days of MIke Harris again - you know, when people worked, taxes were lowered, budgets got balanced...Mike Harris inherited an $11 billion deficit from the NDP and balanced the budget in 5 years w/ 30% income tax cut. What has McGuinty done with his opportunity?
@va3svd "The Liberals knew there was a deficit when they took power"
Not so. They learned of it afterward.
It seems as if you believe that when Mike Harris got the boot, everybody somehow became lazy, jobless vagrants?
It's not hard to balance a budget when you cut spending indiscriminately with no regard for the possible effects that those cuts might have. An increase in funding to health care and education were certainly required when the Ontario Liberals were voted in.
Who are we kidding. He was kicked out of the teaching profession for good reason. or was he? What did he do? Ask any liberal on the Ontario College of Teachers.
@BarrieBusesandTrains I'm from Northern Ontario myself (TBay). During the Harris years, if your life sucked it was because you sucked. If the North is truly a potential powerhouse that could be strong on its own, then why did we screw up when Harris gave us a chance. Lower taxes, less meddling in our business...why did we fail? Northern Ontario needs a lot of support from Toronto just to stay on the downward slide we riding today. Harris gave us some independence and we couldn't handle it.
@MrRedtubelover Well, I've been thinking and reading alot abolut this topic, and I've even written some things on this topic as well. I don't view this as a partisan issue, I view this as a "Toronto and Quebec are the centre of the universe" issue. I believe that they nobody will give a damn about a place with less than ten seats that's so far away from their cushy lives, no matter what color their politics are. They're too busy with Quebec! Xstrata? Gone to Quebec! ONR's GO Trains? Gone to QC!
@BarrieBusesandTrains We are always complaining that we don't get enough from Toronto, yet we say we could do better on our own, not getting anything at all from them? Though they are out of touch with Northerners' needs, we are better off with their inefficient, bureaucratic, poorly run programs than with nothing at all.
@MrRedtubelover And, there's the cancer in this place called "foreign multinationals" (Xstrata, First Student, Vale). These companies are trying to destroy what Northerners have worked so hard to achieve for 100 years. It's not a question of PC vs Liberal vs NDP. It's a question of us not being on Ottawa and Toronto's radar. I'm currently writing several works on an independent Republic of Northern Ontario. And this includes not shipping our wood, ore and hydro south, & using it ourselves.
@BarrieBusesandTrains My point wasn't just that Harris was better than McGuinty. I also mentioned that the North is dependent on funding from Toronto. Yes, most southerners know nothing about us, but the fact is we are depend upon them. NWO receive more from the provincial government than we pay in taxes. If we were capable of succeeding without this funding (working on our own, selling amongst ourselves) we would have succeeded under Harris. We didn't because nwo isn't strong enough alone.
@BarrieBusesandTrains We need large companies to develop our vast resources. Northern Ontario lacks the manpower and the equipment to retrieve and process our resources effieciently. We need large investors to come in and develop these resources, but NWO should still receive a reasonable portion of the profits. I would just like it if we had stronger negotiating rights with the foreign multinationals. I believe that we need to have the power to choose the company that will give us the best deal.
Privatize schools with a voucher. End these retarded unionized teachers for good!

Mike Harris was the best Premier Ontario ever had. He balanced the budget 5 o6 times. I met Mr. Harris twice and it was a pleasure.

Mike the Knife is the biggest asshole that ever came out of a woman's womb.
I hope that the day will come when he'll need a visa to come to Northern Ontario, because he almost destroyed the North, along with McGreedy.
