The series that this drama was part of was made in response to criticisms aimed at the BBC in regards to their negative portrayal of working class white people.
I think we can see that if this was the response that BBC came up with, the proportion of their funding that comes from working class families should be cut.
what about a film about a young muslim girl, meeting an atheist! ha ha, fuck the liberals would shit themselves, "it"s not pc, pass the burgundy Nigel!" as they talk in there Islington town house..
i think this is a beautiful movie that opens ignorant ppls eye's to islam personally im and neither muslim nor christian.. i am still searching i just have a deep respect for all religions :)
good movie. Christianity is a weird and contradicting religion. Jesus says: man shall not kill yet the only atomic bombs were deployed by a Christian Nation.
I do think Islam is more about family, close relationships with your fellow human beings. I find it interesting that in Christian countries people are so lonely that they substitute dogs for friends and family, and it's disturbing to me how alone most Christians live their lives. In Islam you are never alone.
@kevinatucla Christians never been alone nor other religions, you are just exaggerating my friend. if you are happy being a Muslim then good for you, but you can never say that one is so "lonely" because of their religions. I love pets not because I'm lonely but because I love it, and don't give it another meaning. that's why you Muslin are so weird sometimes, you spent your whole life in your religion.
It is not the Islamic way to critisize any other religion, it's more of human nature to do it... And Islam does not only encourage indulging one's self into only rituals.. Working to provide for family & the needy, improve on well-being and going to school to learn(not only Islamic studies, all education) is Islamic, too..
@kevinatucla yeah I wonder why when the prophet died muslims in arabia went crazy and started to invade the Byzantine Empire, when they defeated them they went to Spain in the year 700 and the people from Spain had to fight for hundreds and hundred of years to kick muslims out of their lands. muslim then invaded eastern europe under the turks and it was not until the sieg of vienna in the 1600's when islam was finally defeated in europe
What's wrong with saying "white girl?" I mean, what's wrong with stating the truth? I don't see anything wrong with someone, anyone, saying something like, "Hey, look at that white (black, asian, mexican - take your pick) girl over there standing by the fruit stand ... " What gives? Is it true? Is she white? Is that insultive? No, not to me it isn't. Sheesh! I could if there was a negative connotation attached it, but other than that, PSSHH!
1878EFC2008- its not racist because its called whit girl the reason why it called white girl because shes a white girl living around muslims it knd of obvie. but hey its you point of veiw .
you guys should chill idk what that girl wrote but it seems obvie that she said this movie is racist . i agree it isnt a racist movie & the reason why its called white girl because they dont live around white poeple they live around muslims . but you guys dont have to freakout on her or she cussing the them out & pluse it her or she point of veiw.
Yeah the background music..It's really beautiful...I'll do some research. Btw. thanks so much for posting this. It has really touched me. Please post more stuff like this! C
And White Girl was written by a white woman, produced by a white man, so your point being?
The fact that Brick Lane is written by an Asian woman who has a better understanding of the cultural complexities in Asian communities made it more significant and believable than if a white woman had wrote it. It highlighted an issue that not many Asians would happily admit. Just like White Girl brings out some of the social stigmas not many white, working-class people would gladly admit to.
And if you still have some absurd notion about White Girl being biased or "racist", then perhaps you should go and watch 'Rivers of Blood', which was produced by the BBC as part of the same series as White Girl, and is probably more suitable for your viewing.
Yes, this is what happens if you do drugs and become an alcoholic - you have such a messed up life and you can't think clearly. That's why generally these people always pick up fights with others.
The Feminist Industry has succeeded in perpetuating the stereotype of the 'father' as 'monster', to justify removing men from the family after women divorce them. The cliche 'EVIL MALE' character is needed here for us to feel empathy for the victims - women (of course). Men have been so demonised, that this film doesn't even need to explore WHY the guy is the way he is. We're supposed to just go 'Look out, it's one of those EVIL WHITE MEN, thank got the women got away safely'
lol, the rivers of blood docu has nothing to do with this film, at all i would have thort. And it will be pro-multiculturalism propaganda is wat i was saying. dont get uppety.
Your denial is incredible. BBC made Rivers of Blood documentary as part of the SAME SERIES this film is based on. So saying BBC is pro-multiculturalism for showing one side of the story even though they showed one of the most controversial examples of opposition AGAINST it, shows you're a moron who has a very obsure idea of "propaganda".
Pathetic... utterly pathetic typical BBC swill which I personally believe they used to try and bring understanding between communities: also belittling your working class white family in the process. Why couldnt they have made a documentary like Edge Of The City?
Well, I've only seen BBC dramas such as "Bleak House", and I thought that it was excellent.
I don't feel that this is belittling your working class white family in the process; I view it rather as just a portrait of what things can go wrong. Not every working class white family is like this family; this is just one example of one family, not accounting for the millions of other working class families.
believe it or not but u no wen they run away and move to tht 2 bedroom house, that house is 2 mins away from my house. i remeber wen they did the shooting. n they had a party n the camera man told every 1 to eat so it lookd like it was eid.LOL

I personally believe that religions are not the answer but unfortunately Leah's family life was so chaotic, Islam gave her a sense of strength & some peace in her life. This movie gave me another perspective about why some people get into religion and to respect what they decide to believe in. I guess my beef is with the extremists who hate and people who exploit these beliefs to control. Thanks for sharing.
this is the best drama i ever seen. Thank u very much for uploading. I was in tears wen i saw my muslim sister praying n glorifying almighty. Again thnk u very much
I think there is a spiritual element to religion that gives people peace and strength. What Leah might have found in embracing Islam was some bit of order in her otherwise chaotic family life. However they did touch on the point of parenting. In fact the finale leads to Debbie asking her mom why she didn't make her get an education, which is what really led her to that state of life.
she was originally catholic in the movie and opposed to islam she chose islam over her current belief set cuz it made sense to her and gave her peace..this is about education but its not just about the education ur mom and dad give you its more than just that because this girl educated herself and found islam...the movie was based on a true story and although you think it should of been based on something else it was based on what actually happened and it was about islam.
Hijab is a symbol of modesty, not oppression. There are countries where it is forced on women, but it is in fact a woman's freedom of choice to wear a hijab. Don't confuse hijab with burka because a burka and all other nonsense like it has more to do with culture and traditions imposed by "men" and family traditions than religious rules.
If the family puts extreme social pressure on a girl to conform then its not quite freedom. Let people make there own choices, modesty itself is a choice one can ignore if they wish.
I agree if it is forced then it is not freedom, but unfortunately that is the way it is in some countries and cultures. I am only pointing out a common misconception that Islam permits such oppression. There are always two sides to a coin. Many Muslim women want to wear hijab from their own desire but seen as being oppressed by strangers who do not understand or share their views. There are laws in countries they are prohibited wearing hijab, which is also a violation of their freedom.
@Hikari3747 Regardless of how Muslims are all different cultures, Islam does not fit in British culture. It's a fact.

Would a film called 'brown girl' with similar reductive sterotypes used but inverted.
Whites as happy go lucky hard working friendly.
Muslim as repressed, women hating psychopaths with no desire to integrate.
Would that have got made? No, I don't think so.
