Being an old guy, what I remember the DJs saying way back when, was that the Coca-cola was changed to cherry cola because Lola couldn't get airplay in England because their mostly non commercial stations radio weren't allowed to play anything with copyrighted/patented/licensed etc names in them. So there were two versions of Lola, the American version, (Coca-cola) and the British version (cherry cola).

I thought it was Coca-Cola who had forced the issue of the Lola Coca-Cola version but have since read that the BBC Radio policy didn't allow product s like Coca-Cola or others to be broadcast,so The Kinks changed it to Cherry Cola so they could continue to get much needed airplay,as they tried to get back into the American market after beibg banned for years there.

The ban was on radio airplay of commercialised lyrics ie coca cola,not on album music as such,. I suppose the single which would have been played on air,they changed the words to get it on air and if purchased that's what you would receive,Google the lyrics they either state cherry cola or(album version coca cola).I believe the original words were always coca cola not cherry cola.
