rocks much harder than the album version. they are all going to town on their instruments. Ric was either the luckiest or the smartest mofo on the planet to find these four guys to take his songs and turn them into this kind of magic.
I used to work with this redneck douchebag from Michigan who had a white Dean Cadillac and claimed it was stolen right out of Cobo Hall after The Cars were there in the early eighties. Ric, if you see this and are interested in finding it, I'd gladly give up his name.( I am in no way condemning all rednecks, douchebags or people from Michigan for that matter). Btw, love the CARS. Saw Panarama tour in 1980. Incredible live band.
back in the day you could walk into a club and get lucky to see a band lke this just starting out. Now everything is so pre-packaged you go to a small club and all you get are fucking DJs and wanna be rappers. Sucks ass.
@jrlv62 ok, well, I'll take your word for it, I suppose the styles and lighting does kind of look like the 70's. I was thinking this would have been 1981 though. Thanks for the info.
@Drone7b yes I have that album, I bought it when it came out. However, they still played songs in concert from earlier albums, so going by the hair style and clothes it looked like this was from 1981. But thanks for the response :-)
Substitution...mass confusion! You think you're so illustrious, you call yourself intense!? I wish the younger generation forgot most of the crappy music of the past two decades, and listened to this! Sure it's campy and geeky. The Cars were great!
Every now and then their lyrics are brilliant. This song contains a few examples, my favorite being "such a wavy midnight when you slip into insane". Great to see this live performance.
The ending of this song rocks, and shows just how important it is to listen to your other band mates. Benjamin Orr will be missed. This tune and "Drive" are my fav's.
I'm not much of a fan of their music after 1981 or so, but their early stuff is pure genius...this live version of Bye Bye Love is much better than the studio version, imo.
Oh yeah, I forgot to say Elliot Easton kicks azz! :)
I'm not much of a fan of their music after 1981 or so, but their early stuff is pure genius...this live version of Bye Bye Love is much better than the studio version, imo.
These guys were truly eclectic for their time. Especially Greg Hawkes synth/keyboard style. You have to remember what was on the radio when this album was released, a bunch of boring album-oriented rock. Punk was just getting started in the UK, disco was dying, and new wave had yet to surface. The market timing of these guys was JUST RIGHT.
@KenDyerJr The Cars > Today's crap. That I agree, but I wouldn't put it ALL on rap. Music, mainstream-wise, is more retarded than ever. Pop is shit, country's shit, rock is shit, emo's shit, all trendy music is shit, rap is shit; they're all on the same level. One would think that music could only get better when a group such as The Cars appear. I never imagined the music of the new millennium to be shit. Far as I'm concerned, The Cars are underrated and are HofF worthy. RIP Ben Orr.
Well thank god im not a young kid, i'm 13 and The Cars are my favorite band and biggest influence when i play guitar. Better yet, i'm left handed like Elliot Easton!!
@natetheguitarkid I started listening to The Cars when I was 13 back in 1984 and they were one of my favorite bands back then. I can't tell you how many times I played the cassette but my boombox got a lot of use that summer. Wow! It brings back allot of good memories from my childhood. I was listening to The Cars "Heartbeat City" album, Def Leppard "Pyromania" album, and Van Halen "1984". Good Times!!
Sounds awesome to live back then. The only flaw I would have is the video games. Obviously if i grew up in that time, i would like classic game counsels, but if I were to go through a time machine and have to be stuck in 1980, at age 13, I would miss my video games, lol.
@natetheguitarkid I can see that but since I grew up back then and was the first to have MTV in my school, (when they played music) I still have an Atari and my kids think its a joke but you have to think that our TV still turned with a knob not a remote in 1978!! lol
@natetheguitarkid - on the contrary young man - and yes games were different but arcades were huge & everywhere - when you walked into one, games loud and blasting all over - going through rolls of quarters - like the squirts and toilet paper. The Cars were huge my freshman year -1979 and even Chuck E Cheese was playing The Cars.
so are the opening words?: 'I can't feel this way much longer expecting to survive'! -if so...Ditto!! perfect!xactly how i'm feelin these days aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahhahahhaha i love this song
All of them very talented with their instruments from Ellitot's tight solos on lead guitar, Ben's tight riff's on Bass and singing, Ric's songwriting and rhythym guitar, David's solid drumming and timely fills and Greg's underrated funky and quirky but appealing keyboard and percussion fills. And their backing vocals weren't bad either. Miss ya Ben RIP
Takes me back definitely when there seemingly was always a new "sound" or music genre being created yearly.. RIP Ben. Now today there's SOME talent but not much as most of today's young "music" fans think "talking real fast""" using "macho/tough guy/mysogynistic lyrics through a computer with an easy programmable beat that any 5 year old can do on a synthezer is "talent" Meh, I'll take the Cars and a 1000 other bands of REAL muscians over "fifta cent, J-z, justine bieber, miley ray cyrus, etc

@natetheguitarkid Yes sir-ee kid, that's The Cars for ya. Even back then we knew this was something special, and though they were a big part of the 'New Wave' movement, they definitely had that 'rock edge' to them that quickly set them apart and above so many other 'New Wave' acts...and also they weren't limited by the 'New Wave' thing either. They were in a class by themselves.
And good for u, by expanding ur musical tastes,,,that will expand ur musical ability & creativity.
Thanks! And I agree, they were seperate from most of the new wave bands of the 70's. I like to think of them as the new wave of rock. They have a really unique sound, I'm glad they reunited too. Benjamin Orr would of been proud, even though i read somewhere he felt jealousy towards ric ocasek because he got more attention apparently, well, on youtube, he's the star of the show to most of the girls, lol
these guys ushered in the 80's..Ben Orr was an original..Elliot Easton..a true lefty!..I bought the 8 track of there 1st album..tells u how old i am..im kinda drunk rite now..lol.
Wow, if these guys were New Wave, they sure played there guitars like a hard rock band. I wonder if Theres any bands of today that can mix Hard rock and pop together like this? It's not Power pop, It's not New Wave, it's The Cars.
I love the Cars (esp the early stuff)...with that said....the Cars were very fortunate to have the charisma / stage presence / vocal talent of Ben Orr...lets face it, Greg (although a great keys player) is dull onstage, Elliot, although cool, is boring onstage, and Ric...well, cool, but not Mr. Personality....with all due respect, the early Cars with Ben was the best ever...i saw the cars about a month ago on the "reunion" tour...with sequenced bass...that says it all..you CANT replace Ben!
I saw the Cars in DC on 5/23. Contrary, to some of the negative reviews I have been reading, I actually enjoyed the show. Some reviewers have been "dissing" their stage presence, duh, the Cars were never known as the most enthusiastic band live. With that said, Hawkes and Elliott seemed to be grooving pretty good. Yes, I am old enough to remember them in their heyday. I was in junior high when their classic debut was released. God, I do miss Ben, BIG TIME, RIP!!!!
The people who dislike this video are pro-war idiots who support Obama's borrowing money from China and spending billions in U.S. tax dollars to invade and brutally occupy sovereign nations in the middle east, creating more deficit, more enemies and acting as an imperialist Hitler type when the money should be spent to create new jobs and help our own people while bringing home the troops and putting them to work protecting Americans on U.S. soil. Ric Ocasek for President 2012
@hectorsalinasisback Obama didn't invade anywhere, it was GW Bush & Co. you phuktard... Then they crashed the economy right after Obama was elected. You are obviously from the middle east so please just go back there, stand in a crowd and blow yourself up you doosh bag. At least that will stop you from spamming this same stupid diatribe on all the Cars videos. I do agree with you about Ocasek in 2012, but you're still an a-hoe so s t f u.
@sh4rkbyt3 Are you saying Ric Ocasek is a conservative? If so, I wasn't aware of this fact. Most people capable of reading my comment realize that I'm certainly not a conservative. Obama is a false God who turned out to be another Bush. Watch the documentary "The Obama Deception," it has some interesting tidbits on both Bush and Obama. The Cars were a great American rock band and their music symbolizes a better era when the America was producing more goods on U.S. soil.
@sh4rkbyt3 You can't deny that in March, congress passed the biggest military budget since WWII. Obama is the biggest pro-war president we've had in 20 years, even beating GWBush. Martin Luther King opposed the Vietnam war, because he said those funds should be spent to help the poor in America and programs of "social uplift." Obama increased the number of drone bombers used in Afghanistan, causing thousands of civilian deaths. Cluster bombs Obama used in Yemen also killed innocent civilians.
I just saw the Cars in Toronto, May 2011 with their new album... Loved it! If you get a chance go and see this amazing band before they're all gone! What a great band....
This is one of my favorites because growing up this came out when I was a junior in HS.. we did not have MTV back then! Me and my friends cranked them in our cars! Seeing this is a little like heaven!!
I'm wondering if anyone writing these posts have ever actually seen the bands to which they refer live. I've been around for quite awhile, and have seen the greats LIVE, since the days of the Beatles, and before. It is my true belief that Led Zeppelin is the greatest band to have ever graced the earth. But am I going to post that here? Betchurasses, kids!!
other words, they jammed the shit out of their electric guitars like they were a arena rock/hard rock band, but then you hear the synths and go, what the f***. This song though, has the melody of a pop song and the energy of a hard rock song, that's the beauty of The Cars and diverse rock and roll.
Ahhh cranking these tunes in my '70 SS 350 4-speed Camaro was fricken magical in the early '80s. Girls, cars, music enhancers and The Cars....dang really miss those days.
I gotta tell ya, I bought this DVD off Amazon, and after seeing the samples from it on here and then watching it, it is a different experience. It also offers an interview with the band, Ben Orr's last. I think Ben Orr was sexy and brilliant just like everyone else, but I was able to appreciate Elliot Easton more for some reason. Buy it, you'll be glad you did. And no, I do not work for Amazon!
Wake the kids up quick! Kids this is what real bands do when they perform in a real rock band. They play their own instruments live with good timing, sing very well without digital voice enhancers. Ok, you can go to bed now. I'm just reminiscing about what my Dad used to do to me and my sisters almost 40 years ago when the Midnight Special was on.
Man they just don't make em like The Cars!!What an awesome song from a totally awesome and underrated band! I Fricken Love The Cars! And sorry KenDyer who I thank for sharing this video but I agree with Shanefire6. Rush might have the best drummer in the world but to me they are just ok. The Cars kick ass!
I feel fortunate to have been an impressionable young man at the time of this album's debut. I still listen to this record. It is timeless!

People actually clicked on "dislike"? hahaha. obviously they were just fukkin around
popejeffthefirst 8 months ago
The people who dislike this video are pro-war idiots who support Obama's borrowing money from China and spending billions in U.S. tax dollars to invade and brutally occupy sovereign nations in the middle east, creating more deficit, more enemies and acting as an imperialist Hitler type when the money should be spent to create new jobs and help our own people while bringing home the troops and putting them to work protecting Americans on U.S. soil. Ric Ocasek for President 2012
hectorsalinasisback 8 months ago
@hectorsalinasisback Obama didn't invade anywhere, it was GW Bush & Co. you phuktard... Then they crashed the economy right after Obama was elected. You are obviously from the middle east so please just go back there, stand in a crowd and blow yourself up you doosh bag. At least that will stop you from spamming this same stupid diatribe on all the Cars videos. I do agree with you about Ocasek in 2012, but you're still an a-hoe so s t f u.

@hectorsalinasisback What an idiot, Bush borrowed the $400 Billion from China you stupid Conservaturd!
sh4rkbyt3 8 months ago

Is it just me orr does it seem like whenever ocasek isn't singing lead, he seems a bit detached or disinterested?
nhgumbah 8 months ago
@nhgumbah Noticed that also. Elliot and Ben probably got all the girls. Allthough Pauline P. is a looker. Any Cars groupies circa 1984 care to post?

How can the cars continue without Benjamin Orr? His songs and his vocals made them what they were. This video is awesome, thanks for sharing.

When you think about it .... rock and roll just doesn't get any better than this. What a band!
Harding42 8 months ago 2
Everyone always comments that they were the first popular "synth" band, but they sure kept the fat guitar licks in their songs!
IrishMetalCop 8 months ago
@IrishMetalCop
other words, they jammed the shit out of their electric guitars like they were a arena rock/hard rock band, but then you hear the synths and go, what the f***. This song though, has the melody of a pop song and the energy of a hard rock song, that's the beauty of The Cars and diverse rock and roll.
