They'd better leave that tree alone! It's a much better landmark than that God-awful trout they've got parked in front of Chamber of Commerce. Seriously. That thing is UGLY. Why can't we be home of the cheeseburgers? Like Caseville? Something COOL.
there is also another theory of the tree is a good luck charm and when something good happens to you your supposed to put the shoes you were wearing at the time up there without anyone seeing for your good luck to continue.
I lived in K-Town almost all my life. Moved away in March 07. I am 36 now,and I now live in chicago. My shoes were once in that tree on Hwy 131 between Mancelona and K-Town. I never did know how that tree started, do you know? I also heard it was cut done, is that true?
Nobody really knows how the tree started... this short is our theory ;-)
It wasn't actually cut down, but MDOT cleared most of the shoes off a couple years ago -- they said it was becoming a hazard because it would distract drivers. That said, taking the shoes off didn't stop people from putting them up -- it's filling up again pretty quickly.
What I heard on the origins of the trees is that there was a band called Shoe Tree that used to play for people in the wild as an underground music thing. They'd leave the shoes on the tree behind as a memento to show the different places they played at.
I go to Kalkaska a few times a year, I love it up there. I'm from Kalamazoo Mi but we have a cabin up there. I've never seen the tree tho. Maybe I'll look for it next time!
Last I knew, it was still around... though I know that a year or two ago they pretty much "emptied" it -- MDOT decided it was a driving hazard or something, since it distracted people...
Of course, it filled right back up. We shot this last spring.
I was there, Twas very awesome. I heard it was haunted, True?
