gas is way better then flux it will also give you a stronger weld... the gas is there to take the oxygen out of the molten metal. but nice job i had my doubts.
And a plus is if your car or truck breaks a leaf spring you just whip out your Bowie knife, stick it where the leaf spring is broke and get home. Lol just kiding
Absolutely incredible!! Your interaction with the camera, the teaching method AND especially the professional result if the blade. You are an amazing and skilled young man.
I dont care what any one says about the vids you made a seriously nice knife, you did all the polishing yer self and stainless is a bitch too polish. Great job all round truly something u can be proud of.
I don't know why you're having problems with silver solder, because it's the easiest way of joining two metals I know of. Possibly, if you're using an oxy-acetelyne cutting torch, it's fairly tricky getting the balance of oxygen to acetelyne right., and likewise temperatures. You might try using a welding torch instead, with a predominately blue flame. Over here Silver solder melts at less than 700 deg. Celsius, which is well below red heat. and you need a good flux, applied with the job cold.
Strantor take a look at my channel bro. I am forging some new stuff, but theres an abuse video to show you I know what I am talking about on tempering and treating 5160 pal :). I can realllllllllly help you out, and actually help you make your knifes work, but understand it is a patient process, and many makers skip steps, and wonder why the knife dulls quick. I'm willing to help. Just hit me up strantor.
Holy cow, man! This video (and its prequel) were the two most enjoyable videos I have seen on YouTube for a LONG time! Both thumbs up! I wish I was handy enough to be able to make such things. Sure, I could just BUY a bowie if I wanted to, but to MAKE one yourself is AWSOME! I wonder, what quality is that steel? How sharp is the edge and how well does the steel keep the edge?
OMG strantor your killing me man. You quenched 5160 in water NOOOOOOOOOO....
I already know right now it's edge is ruined. Gosh...friend I love your art talents, but I swear before the day is over I'm going to pester you into asking me how to make that 5160 leaf spring knife of yours hold a razor edge even after chopping a 2x4 in half 3 times.
Daaaaaaaamn nice work, but it probably couldnt cut itself out of a cardboard box.
Hey I finished my bowie knife using this same steel. Check out my video, of me doing all the paper razor shave test. Then watch as I hack the 2x4 in half 3 times, and shave my leg.
When you fail to acheive the same sharpness, and rub your head as I did before learning how to properly treat 5160. Just email me. Cody Oebel at G male dot com.
I will tell you the secret to it. Other than that your art is awesome!
good job... keep at it and your blades will get even better... as far as u selling them, figure out your time and material.. then put another 0 on the end of it..
Unless someone is buying a knife for purely art. It is not good to sell a knife without showing it can handle abuse testing!
For example checkout my youtube channel and the bowie I just finished.
Strantor.. the post of this video is using torches. I love his work, but its killing me inside to know how decarburized the matrix of alloys in his knife is because he doesnt know how to heat treat it properly.
Lets see if I can get him to show us an abuse test of this knife :)
Some people will still buy a custom hand crafted knife. However it is true that they are costly. I'm in Canada and it's expensive for supplies here, let alone steel.
Apart from brands such as Fallkniven. You can not realistically expect a common store bought knife to last. I've seen a bowie style Puma brand 300$ knife shatter when batoning some dry wood in the winter.
LOL thats why it's a 300$ knife. Dont buy manufactured knifes if you want a serious knife blade. Get one made for you.
For example check out my youtube channel. Look at the Big texas Bowie I just finished. Look at the abuse test LOL...
What a machine cannot do. Is properly temper a blade. I also have a video of me tempering the Bowie on coals. I'm trying to get strantor to show the same abuse test with this knife in this video. So when it fails. I can tell him the secret ;)
Your "tempering" is totally OFF. That is not how you temper a blade. Your going to have a pearlite structure when you make it non magnetic, and at some points where the steel was hotter it will be martonzite and pearlite mixture. Meaning the edge will be worthless!
You need to make a forge. Evenly heat the entire blade to non-magnetic (Red-Orange Hot). Since it's 5160 carbon steel. Quench in Auto-matic transmission fluid. Then to temper. Set spine down on coals. Until edge is straw-bronze.
I am interested in how you got the shine for the knife. However I make my 5160 leaf spring steel to make real knives. I hack a 2x4 in half 3 times and shave my hair with it. I video the entire process and burn it to a DVD before selling it to a customer.
This is just a show knife, without proper heat treatment, and tempering it is practically useless, and only for looks!
Pretty good fab work on your bolster. If I could give you a tip, perhaps to help you out, it is not bashing your work. When you weld those pieces of mild steel together and then onto the bolster you could weld them using oxy/ace. This will ensure a good weld AND reduce your work load by having to fill in with solder. Another benefit of this is you have absolutely no slag inclusions from the weld, no splatter, and no blow-out from the flux on your SMAW rod.
You are a very talented young man to produce such a fine knife from scrap, i wish there were more like you. im sure your folks are very proud, have faith people will pay to buy handmade craftsmanship like yours and dont worry about small imperfections this shows its not some mass produced crap from china - keep up the good work
ill be honest.. i thought this knife was going to turn out to be a waste of time and a piece of crap. Dude, AWESOME JOB !!! you have to show how sharp it is tho. i hope John Fitzen could see this vid.
Awesome job man! I've seen a few of your videos and you certainly have the passion and talent. Keep on doing it and sooner or later someone will take notice and you too will be a brand name! Excellent work!!!!
you made nearly every meatl surface a mirror......AWESOME!! i would pay $350 dollars i had that much to spare.you should find cheaper ways to get the same product and start a business with them.keep on forging.
let me start off by saying nice job. its very hard to make any money making knife's. I quit trying to make a profit years ago. and it took about 5 years at it before I started to make a name for my self.. now I just kick back and make 3-7 knife's a year. Do I make any money NO. but I do make the person very happy when he or she picks up there new knife. and if you do it right part of your sole is in every knife that you make. you have a good start keep it up..
@cklskypilot Do you mean make a living out of it? I watch a guy one a hunting website I frequent and he makes $100 or so a knife and has no money into them. Only time. He does it on the side for extra cash and does very well for a side job. All the wood for the handles he finds himself, and the steel is cheap files. I think his only expense is the tools, and coal for tempering. Just curious if you mean side money or actual career?
dude, that knife looks badass! ive been doin some knife forging myself... dunno when i can manage to create something that beautiful. Keep up the good work!
@MrLorenzotrigueros nothing really. its kinda pointless, just a mantlepiece. Its fully functional; i could go outside now and chop down a tree with it, but i just dont need to do something like that every day,
@enjoiorange nope sorry i only did this as a hobby for a while. I'm too busy working my real job right now to mess with this stuff now, but i hope to get back into it later.
Excellent job on that Bowie! Don't worry about the pits on the bolster. You live you learn. It looks from here like a well thought out project. I have been making knives since I was 17. A word about tempering though. Sticking the blade edge up in a cook stove set at 375 degrees for about 20 or 30 minutes gives you a more even temper. Just a thought for future reference.
@strantor I have found that for some reason that if you lay it flat the blade will not temper as well. Most ovens heat from the bottom so you would be trying to be consistent as possible in your heating. You can usually bend a thick wire or weld up some kind of bracket to hold your blade.
@HammockerSam trouble is, nobody likes to pay for hand craftsmanship any more. that took me about 30hrs to make. even if i only pay myself minimum wage (7.25/hr) thats 217$. Then factor in the consumables: grinding wheels, belts, acetylene gas, scrap metal, electricity, and tool wear, i would have to charge 350$ to make a profit. nobody will pay that price unless you have made your name in the industry like gil hibben
@strantor You may be right, but I know of people who will buy such a knife for over $500! Example: NutnFany's friend Fitzen (knife maker) sells knives that look like like shit compared to that one for $500, and people DO buy them. Maybe now isn't the best time to do it, but, you know....
@SinisterLegion trouble is, nobody likes to pay for hand craftsmanship any more. that took me about 30hrs to make. even if i only pay myself minimum wage (7.25/hr) thats 217$. Then factor in the consumables: grinding wheels, belts, acetylene gas, scrap metal, electricity, and tool wear, i would have to charge 350$ to make a profit. nobody will pay that price unless you have made your name in the industry like gil hibben. they can just buy one for 25$ at walmart
@strantor no but a leaf spring is free and the other material is very cheap ease up on your expendables & it should not takek 35 hours. that should take maybe 45 minutes with the rigth tools.
@strantor you could sell this knife for a lower price than its worth then if the person who purchased it thinks its good quality he might go tell his friends, knife forums and all that about you then you could start your buisness. but its risky =P just a sugestion
WRONG :) People buy custom knives all the time. I manufacture "HAND" forged knives I forge the same steel your using. However I know in depth a great deal about metallurgy, and if your not taking a video of your knife hacking a 2x4 in half 3 times and then shaving yourself with it right after. People who do buy custom knives wont buy yours. I make all my sells on this very abuse test! I am back-ordered.
lol dude your intro is freaking hilarious. ive just forged my first knife today, except while heating it the last time to temper it i got side tracked and the damn thing melted...lol you live and learn. I also use railroad track as an anvil.
Bad ass knife man good job this goes to show how much better it can be to make your own stuff and how much more it will mean to you, People would be much more likely to take care of their thing if they took the time to build them !
wow how do u still have fingers =) wearing gloves while using your sander owch too bad iff ur glove grabs and ur hand gets crushed on the fly weel other wise very nice knife.
wow that is a very nice knife, at first i was thinking it was going to look shit, BUT when you stated to put it all together i began to change my mind and when it seen the finished knife i was amassed by how good it looked... well don keep up the good work 5 star's.
thats fucking amazing awesome work how many hours do you have into that knife??i know how much work it can take to get 1 little pit or scratch out and that whole thing is like glass.
yea gas would have saved you those pops and carbon spots..that why it's normal to use brass for this purpose and you tap it into place and it is super tight yet there is no weld spot on the blade itself i haven't done this since i was a kid but my dad showed me a lot... he used to stat with files and wrap them over a mild steel core..
beautiful knife i have to say i am a fan of the bowie collection and you made a nice quality bowie i would buy one from you. i that sucker is like a machette how sharp did you get the blade?
Beautiful blade and handle..... Have you since then made another like it?

Dude i would totally buy that knife! So would everyone else who's seen it. YOU NEED TO START A KNIFE MAKING COMPANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HammockerSam 1 year ago
@HammockerSam trouble is, nobody likes to pay for hand craftsmanship any more. that took me about 30hrs to make. even if i only pay myself minimum wage (7.25/hr) thats 217$. Then factor in the consumables: grinding wheels, belts, acetylene gas, scrap metal, electricity, and tool wear, i would have to charge 350$ to make a profit. nobody will pay that price unless you have made your name in the industry like gil hibben
strantor 1 year ago
@strantor You may be right, but I know of people who will buy such a knife for over $500! Example: NutnFany's friend Fitzen (knife maker) sells knives that look like like shit compared to that one for $500, and people DO buy them. Maybe now isn't the best time to do it, but, you know....

@strantor no but a leaf spring is free and the other material is very cheap ease up on your expendables & it should not takek 35 hours. that should take maybe 45 minutes with the rigth tools.
circusboy90210 1 year ago
@strantor thats worth way more than 350$
deckflip 1 year ago
@strantor you could sell this knife for a lower price than its worth then if the person who purchased it thinks its good quality he might go tell his friends, knife forums and all that about you then you could start your buisness. but its risky =P just a sugestion

@strantor

Bad ass knife man good job this goes to show how much better it can be to make your own stuff and how much more it will mean to you, People would be much more likely to take care of their thing if they took the time to build them !

yea gas would have saved you those pops and carbon spots..that why it's normal to use brass for this purpose and you tap it into place and it is super tight yet there is no weld spot on the blade itself i haven't done this since i was a kid but my dad showed me a lot... he used to stat with files and wrap them over a mild steel core..
