He sang backup (harmony) vocals when the song was originally released. He's always been able to sing, he just doesn't necessarily have the strong sustainable vocals that most front men do in really good bands. He is an extraordinary guitar player though, and I love how he brings a very melodic Spanish finger picking type vibe and intertwines it with American rock.
