I feel for that poor soprano. she must have blown her pipes in the first movement by oversinging. There is no worse feeling than to just crack up your tone and not know how to get it back. Ouch. The rest of the performance is stellar, esp. that 1st trumpet and the low brass.
It is a hard note. Not only is it high, but naturally out of tune with the rest of the chorus. But they redeem themselves shortly after. Incredible performance! Oh and is that Thomas Hampson?
How ridiculous can people posting negative comments get? Apparently a lot! One slip by one musician out of 1046 does NOT ruin a symphony. This was a good performance by a fantastic orchestra conducted by a renowned interpreter of one of the greatest symphonies and there is nothing but harsh criticism on someone who has trained their entire life, not to be perfect, but to do the best job possible. After seventy minutes of making music, you be perfect tomato boy. Do you critics even love music?
@AJHyoton agreed 200%. it's barely noticeable -- it's a half-second slip up in a piece that's an hour and a half long. The rest of the performance is amazing, and that should be what counts.
@AJHyoton I agree that one slip doesn't necessarily ruin an entire performance, especially with so distinguished an ensembe. It's just very unfortunate though that the cracked notes are in one of the a) most sublime moments in the work, and b) one of the most exposed. Imagine how poor Gwyneth Jones, a great artist, felt. 'Thanks' to youtube, the record remains, unfortunately. And yes, I should say the critics you cite DO love this music, and DEEPLY, else they wouldn't be so shocked.
What's up with the first Soprano? :( My favourite bit, the high C, is completely ruined =(
My all-time favourite is Eschenbach with the Paris Symphony (?) with Erin Wall and Twyla Robinson as the soprano solos... The most magnificent voices and the best performance of that bit I've ever heard; really, really orgasmic! I'm watching Eschenbach and Wall tonight ;D not sure if the 2nd soprano is as good though XD
The soprano on the left really fucked-up, not just a little, but seriously out of tune, and she squeaked totally spoiling the score. Flop !! A FIASCO !!!
Good conductor, but lousy singing ( the female solo on the left , who's that ? ) Yes, as many comments here points out, SHE'S OUT OF TUNE, how could that be allowed with a conductor of his ( Haitink ) calibre and the orchestra he's directing ? Bit of a bummer isn't it ?
boterwisk! Thank you so much! I am moved beyond the expression of words. The passion and power of this music is indescribable. There has been some quarrellings about sopranos that I find frankly surprising. Intonation is the hardest thing to perfect, but I doubt that one member of the audience could remember, first and foremost is the message of the music! God bless you Mahler!! King among Composers!
It is really fantastic music ever. I agree that Mahler completed the classical music ever. We can listen evey moments of feeling we can get from other musics from his musics. What do you think about that?

WITH your reply than things could have been settled at once.Often comments are withdrawn. But what about "and I really don't care"???,that doesn't sound very courteous,or am I wrong? You have given us the possibility to comment, which indicates that you DO care! I am puzzled.
@jcriedijk I give you the possibility to comment because i care about your questions about the video, what i don't care is your claims because of removing the comments, are you looking for the names of the sopranos? or are you trying to find someone to fight with?, in that case look around your house.
thank you for your reply, but reply to what? You have removed my comment (and question), so this is a bit odd.!! Apparently you did not like my comment about Gwyneth Jones, but if we can only comment what you like, than it is betterf to remove the possibility for comments. The singing of Gwyneth Jones was by many commented as horrible and out of tune, facts are facts. Arleen Auger was good as ever, a grand soprano.
@jcriedijk I didn't remove your comment, and i really don't care about it, when i was posting the reply to your question about what singers were in the concert my internet connection blow up and for accident i reply to your comment three times, and trying to remove two of the answers i remove your comment by accident, don't mad about it, is just a comment.
Gwyneth Jones didn't ruin the song, but my computer freezing at 3:57 sure did :P

Masterpiece of Gustav. Pity the two sopranos are so off key to the extent that they spoil the entire performance. This is quite embarrassing!!!

The superb Brass playing more than makes up for 3 out of tune notes by a singer.

But I still think they are nice, hot babes.
