  • So gorgeous!!! I love how the Russian Orthodox Church takes its music seriously. It's hard to come by such beautiful singing in the Western church, except for large cathedrals and the like.

  • Hallo Elizabeth, Thanks for the video and the most beautiful voices I have ever heard .Do you know if there are any professional recording of this choir on Kolomenkoye. I love your recordings, but this should be professionally recorded

this is so beautiful and needs to be saved for all of us. If I could be of any help please let me know

  • @adambomb30 OMG! That is her! I love her voice! Thank you so much!

  • @lbredikhin5 You're welcome. There is nothing better than a great Russian contralto or mezzo soprano.

  • Who is the composer of this song?

  • The composer of this version is the Russian composer Frunza. The Magnificat is sung during the All Night Vigil served on Saturday evenings and on the eves of Great Feasts in the Orthodox church. The text is from the gospel of St Luke.

  • Thank you, wonderful performance.

  • thank you google, something pure an godfull -redemption- goes in internet, we can hace the chants of the xerubin and the serapin, but all this was predicted by the freat prophet daniel blagosloviet dusha maia gospodi

  • The soloist has very beautiful voice!

  • So touching...

  • 2) He hath shewed strength with his arm : he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat : and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things : and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel : as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.

  • @ILLUS1A

Yes, these are the words of the Magnificat (sung during the ninth Ode of the Canon at Matins). The words of the refrain in English are:

"More honorable than the Cherubim and incomparably more glorious than the Seraphim; who, without corruption, gavest birth to God the Word: true Theotokos, we magnify thee."

"Theotokos" is the dogmatic title for the Mother of God, appointed by the third Ecumenical Council of the Christian Church. 'Deipara' is the Latin equivalent.

  • Here is the full translation without chorus:

    1) My soul doth magnify the Lord : and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded : the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth : all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me : and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him : throughout all generations.

  • More honerable than the Cherubim , Beyond compare than the Seraphim

Without defilement You gave birth to God the Word. True Mother of God we magnify

    You.

(This is a more poetic translation )

  • for the begging OUR PURE (MOTHER) , the greek chants says: the indeed Mother Of God .

  • very nice soprano. very balanced. awesome choir.

  • a resplendant feast of sonorous perfection, quenches my soul with every haunting note,as though chimes stirred by the breeze from angels wings, beautiful

  • When I hear this beautiful Russian music I get paralysed, as if invisible wings were holding me. Hail Russia!

  • This is so heavenly !!! I love the ladys voice!!!! So rich. Gives me goosebumps. Thank you so much!

  • From an old "Slavonic" prayer book:

    More honorable than the cherubim,

and beyond compare more glorious than the seraphim.

Without corruption thou gavest birth to God the Word.

    True Theotokos, we magnify thee.

  • we're sinners?

  • ofcourse we are, everybody sins

  • Overwhelmed with emotion!

    Nine singing souls.

  • Heavenly music! Very beautiful!

  • Sweetness to my hears... Heavenly voices.

  • Oh yes, I just noticed the tilttle:Hymn of the Mother of God-must be Orthodox, as in Most Holy Theotokos pray for us. God Bless!!!

  • Great music, I only understand English, but it sounds like some Orthodox music I've heard, as I am Eastern Orthodox!!!

  • This is actually verses from the Magnificat (My soul doth magnify the Lord) sung by the soloist, with the hymn, Dostoino Yest - More honorable than the Cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim; Thou, Who without defilement gavest birth to God the Word, true Birth-giver of God we magnify thee - interspersed between the verses.

  • maravillosa la voz de la contralto!!!!

  • Ich liebe diese Musik! Gaensehaut!

    Outstanding!

  • Dieser Chor ist wirklich unbeschreiblich gut. Ganz besonders aber die Altistin. Diese Stimmen gibt es heute kaum noch.

  • Exquisitely divinely beautiful. I'm so glad that so many people have found this and felt the same way over the past two years.

  • More honourable than the cherubim and truly more glorious than the seraphim who without defilement gavest birth to God the Word, thee, the true Mother of God, do we magnify.

  • magnitfique! de toute beauté!

  • That is just beautiful !

  • they dont sing the part which is in brackets, the other part is the main chorus, also i dont know what the solo part is about...

the transscription could be like this:

Chestneyshuyu Kheruvim i slavneyshuyu bez sravneniya Serafim, bez istleniya Boga Slova rozhdshuyu, sush'uyu Bogorodicu Tya velichayem. Enjoy! ;)

  • ok i have it! finally! this is the "Hymn of the Mother of God", its a prayer:

(Достойно есть яко воистину блажити Тя, Богородицу,

присноблаженную и пренепорочную и Матерь Бога нашего.)

    Честнейшую Херувим

    и славнейшую без сравнения Серафим,

    без истления Бога Слова рождшую,

    сущую Богородицу Тя величаем.

  • Thanks, Alex....Where did you find the words? Also, could you translate them into English? Spasibo!

  • Well, the translation could look like this:

Worthiest Cherubim and gloriest incomparable Seraphim, born without rotting the Word of God, our pure Mother of God, we praise you. Hope its comprehendible enough! ;)

  • Thank you so much! I have wondered what they were singing for a long time. Now it is even more special and meaningful.

  • @Elizabeth1952

Dear Elizabeth, How can I get a hold of such a beautiful piece? I would like my own choir to havea look at it!

  • @Alex33w

Thanks Alex for the translation very comprehensible.

Without rotting sounds rather strange though in English. Sometimes a direct translation can sound weird.

I'd think "without corruption" is better placed in this case.

  • @Alex33w

    How we sing in English:

It is truly meet to bless Thee, o Theotokos

Who art ever blessed and all-blameless and the mother of our God

    More honorable than the Cherubim,

and more glorious beyond compare than the Seraphim

Thou who without stain barest God the Word

    True Theotokos, we magnify Thee.

According to tradition, it was revealed to monks on Mt. Athos by the angel Gabriel.

  • Great. Who is this amazing alto?

  • Predivno....

    amazing....

    wunderbar....

pozdrav za sve ruse i srbe

  • This video is simply stunning. The depth in all of the voices is amazing, it sounds so open and gorgeous.

  • or even ПЕСЕНЬ ПРЕСВЯТОЙ БОГОРОДИЦЕ

  • sorry its ПЕСНЬ БОГОРОДИЦE ;)

  • the title of this piece is ПЕСНЬ БОГОРОДИЦЫ (Song for the Mother of God) by Александр Мень (Aleksandr Men')

  • does anyone perhaps know the composer? because i would love to know

  • ...bcego xoposhego deshites, ibo dni lukabie. Sencillo, pero profundo. Well done...

  • They are lovely :) This makes me want to join my churches chior. They asked me to but I've been slackin on the invitation. I see this video and I just feel like singin!! Thank you for the post!

  • awesome! the soloist is fantastic, made me cry; so much reverence. I loved that the music moved in an organic way.

Who is this ensemble? what is the soloist's name?

  • Beautiful. Good solo

  • I grew up on Western evangelicalism and thought we had it all. Then I visited Russia, Ukraine and Kazakstan and realized how empty I had been all those years. The music of the Orthodox makes me weep, as does the evident devotion of the downtrodden gathered in worship there.

A wonderful experience is to be had in Kiev at the Monastery of the Caves, but no less affective is a tiny church on an island in the river Dniper in Dnepropetrovsk.

  • Yes, you said this so good... i was kid when i first came into a church (it was rusinska church in yugoslavia) and i weeped..everybody try to get out of me whay? did anyone hurt me, did i run away from home, what it is? i just told them truth; something just touch my heart, i cannot help!

  • Does anyone know who the soloist is? What an incredible voice! The choir is very good, but she is amazing.

  • what choir is this?

  • Truly a wonderful sound - could listen to it for hours. Is it posible to buy this on CD?

  • we don't put this on cd's, these are our prayers and is sacred to us, i live in toronto, i attend chruch 0 i am a russian orthodox/ and the choir gives me goose bumps, are beautiful it really is. and hsould remain in chruch walls, either than a cd

  • Which Russian church in Toronto do you attend?

  • The Russian one!

  • Henry St? That's where I go.

  • Absolutely beautiful! Thank you for posting this.

  • well I now have a destination for my first trip abroad, gotta be there to hear this in person if it's at all possible. So amazing,if the churches here had this kind of appeal I'd live in the pews.

  • No pews in a Russian Orthodox church, but there's plenty of good singing in Russian Orthodox parishes in the U.S.!

  • yeah but then I'd be in the U.S..you can see the bind I'm in

  • Does anybody out there know the name of this piece? I would love to know if it's on a CD I could buy. Even if the CD was surrounded by some garbage rap nonesense and cost $100, I'd still buy it.

  • Even though I am a catholic I think orthodox sacred music has much more to offer with it's depth..Divine beauty

  • I dont know whn I have ever heard a choir that can compare with this one. They are just fantastic. Thank you for sharing this. Sposibo!!

  • Could you please tell me what the title of this is? I assume it's liturgical. It's simply beautiful and the solo mezzo's coloring throughout her range is so rich. Love it and her.

  • This is the Magnificat, from the Gospel of Luke, where Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth and sings, "My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour..." The refrain that's repeated throughout is an Orthodox prayer to the Mother of God, "More honourable than the Cheruvim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word: the very Theotokos [Mother of God], thee do we magnify."

  • Wow, how fortunate we are to be able to watch-hear this, it extends our musical palette! what joy. It helps me to understand the mentality of the Russian musicians I promote. Thanks
