Hey, this is a really random question, but I've seen you wearing a deathly hallows necklace in other videos(I particularly remember "To Kayley, who is sad"). Where'd you get it?
@owlssayhooot Hey, if you like documentaries so much, you should definitely czech out True/False Film Fest in Columbia Missouri! It's really cool, just sayin =) Four day, 100% documentary film festival!
Cool video Kayley as usual :) I'm quite into British documentary, I like mixed documentary films like docu-fiction haha! You should watch Sans Soleil by Chris Marker (if you haven't already seen it). It's not British but it's a good example of docu-fiction I think :P Anyhooot, I'm glad you're enjoying the film festival, I'm going to look for one in England and start going to more things like that; conventions etc. Right, that will be all, I'm off to buy a tent :) Au revoir...
Those movies sound awesome! I actually want to hunt them down, especially that late autumn one. And I am glad that the New York Times film makes you feel like that paper will endure because I am pretty sentimental towards things in print (she says as she types into a computer.)
@mirandalovesyouall This is true :P you can't avoid the digital revolution huh..? It's a real shame. For example, and this may shock and horrify you (sorry in advance), with regards to print media, I was at the skip the other day helping my Dad with some garden waste (the willow tree had fallen down in our back garden). They had skips for plastics, paper, household wastes, etc. However, alongside these skips was a new one. It was almost full and above on the sign hung the word "Books"! :(
While I would say that, at least in the past decade, Michael Moore was largely responsible for contributing to the idea that documentaries can potentially become box office success stories, it's kind of disheartening that docs are still struggling to gain wide theater releases.
KAYLEY!!!! thanks to you im now kinda obsessed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer! I started on thursday and IM IN LOVE WITH IT!!! :D now i'll have something to do over summer XD
Have you seen Senna? It's the most incredible documentary I've ever seen, if you get a chance to check it out I really would recommend that you do. :)
@owlssayhooot You say that I can't handle your response, then YOU go and delete my comment! I was saying that I thought you were being serious, then when you (not very calmly) expained that you were kidding, I realised that I'd got it completely wrong. I tried to explain that I was the one who'd got it wrong, you realised what I meant but you'd already been horrible so you deleted my comment to make you look better. Doesn't exactly back up your point, now, does it?
Two of my friends make documentaries about different "social subjects" so to speak (like immigration, poverty, but also less "heartpounding?" subjects). All the info you can find here about them is in spanish, though.
Oh, wow, "Page One" sounds like a must-see. I'm so glad that you're taking advantage of SIFF, seeing all of these films and then telling us all about them. I wouldn't've heard of/developed interest in watching any of these films had it not been for this series. :D
I agree about documentaries completely. I'm very much a sports nerd, so I have been watching a lot of sports documentaries recently (not to mention I'm going to be making one about HS Football soon) and I just love that they can pull you in and tell you an amazing story, and its true. Sometimes it is biased, yes, but it is for the most part, truer than any other film genre can hope to be.
Hey Kayley, I think you should do like a monthly video where you just talk about films that you've watched (kind of like this video), even when it's not during SIFF. The films you recommend always seem to be very interesting.
Please tell me you've seen Waltz with Bashir. It's probably one of the best documentaries I've ever seen.
I completely agree with you about documentaries being a favourite genre, they're just so real and interesting, always making me want to do more research on the topic.
About a year ago there was a show in the documentary channel which I loved. It was just the life of the director who documented them for 13 years. It was just beautiful, I can't explain why but it was just amazing in it's simplicity. Documentaries rock.
@ExcessOfTess I know, right?! I would love a bow tie, but I don't really have the appropriate clothing to go with a bow tie...or a place to buy one. One day, I shall acquire a bow tie! And my mom will officially never speak to me again. xD
@cookielover734 What?! You just insult me, I defend myself and they you get "the wrong end of the stick"? You should probably not insult people on the internet if you don't want to deal with the other persons response, hahaha.
I love cinema, maybe a bit too much. Have you ever seen the film 'Rage'? For me it took film to a new level, and I felt like it was a very real look into the world of fashion and modelling.
I really like your film reviews - you think of everything I would want to know about a film before seeing it! Please do these videos more often! Much more fun than reading about the films...
I was walking round town AGES ago and some people with channel 4 cameras were walking around, so me and my friends just kept walking in front of them :) lol
I've had that thing where you are in a place where they are filming something but you dont realise what they are filming.... I watched an episode of dr who last year and was just like I WAS FRIGGIN THERE, the annoying this was me and the parents went for a walk during the filming so when we were there they were 'set dressing' and when we got back they had all packed up and gone.... grrr that was annoying
@owlssayhooot Wow, can't you just admit you made a tiny mistake instead of being hostile and sarcastic towards your fans. She was only pointing something out, and then you replied with a rather nasty comment. Way to be nice to the people that let you have all these oppertunities.
@cookielover734 How was that hosile or nasty?! I was kidding! I made a whole video and the only thing she commented on was that I made a stupid mistake and I'M the rude one? Don't take me so seriously, because I sure as hell don't. And you aren't my "fans," I'm a video blogger. You watch my videos. You're not my fan club.
@owlssayhooot Just to say, kayley, so on your side on this arguement, you always make me laugh both in the videos and the comments, sometimes when you not funny too!, Love you in an internet memes kind of way, hahaha...but I'M A FAN! ;)
Some of the most engaging and memorable experiences I've had as a viewer have been with documentaries. Looking forward to watching Adam Curtis' new film about capitalism 'All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace' when my exams are done. I've heard hugely conflicting reports, which is the kind of thing I love to hear when I'm about to watch a documentary.
I don't know if you've watched it already, but I really want you to watch The Pianist. I just watched it last night. It is absolutely touching and so full of hope. The Pianist is about the journey of this wonderful pianist by the name of Wladyslaw Szpilman who fights to survive the Holocaust. No words can describe how impressed I am with this particular film.
Now I might b basis because my school was in this but the documentary 'Thespians' is really good. It's about the International Thespian Society and the largest state competition in Florida... It follows 3 high schools during the competition
I've been watching lots of documentaries on Netflix lately, and I'm discovering that it's one of my favorite genres as well. If you care to look it up, there's a really great documentary called Marwencol that's on Netflix Instant Play now.
A few months ago was New Zealand Film Festival month so I went with my brother to see a documentary called Donated to Science. It tracked the first year of medical students at Otago Uni as they dissected their cadavers and interviewed people who had agreed to donate their bodies. By the end you realise that the people interviewed are the cadavers being dissected, and some students chose to watch the interviews of the lives they had just dissected all year. It was really shocking and emotional.
If you're looking for an amazing documentary you should watch Liberia 77. It's about two boys that grew up in Liberia that return there as adults to go back to the place they loved only to find how much it's really changed. Not only did they find how much destruction has happened but they found that no one had photos from before 1977 due to the revolution. It's really interesting and your love for documentaries and photography really tie into the theme. I got to see it at a conference =D
I love documentaries. Some of y most favorite semi recent ones are inside job and exit through the fist shop. The first was about the current recession and the second about the street artist Banksky It was saddening that I had to drive an hour to get to a theater that played movies such as documentaries though.
@musicnut91 I wasn't being rude...I was honestly asking, haha. Don't take things so personally, bro. And if you didn't want an ACTUAL answer with titles, why ask? A still yes would have told you next to nothing, lol.
Kayley, you're living the life I hope to live in the future; what with all the traveling, hobbies, and different opportunities you have. I've always wanted to pursue many things that you've already done (or are actually pursuing), but I'm just a bit...uncertain as to how things might work out for me. So many of the things I want to focus on in the future are just impractical (photography, freelance travel journalism, painting, etc.). Do you have any advice on that? :l
@JustHereForComedy Freelance travel journalism? In my dreams! I don't really know what advice I can give you because everything I do that you mentioned, I do for fun & I'm not really pursuing. Painting, photography, hobbies, those are all things I just picked up. The things I do in videos like this are just things I go to because I get bored sitting around and like films, haha. I guess just always look for opportunities and just sort of do what you want, because nothing will happen if you don't.
@JustHereForComedy Aaaaand... I think people get so caught up thinking their lives are boring and there is nothing to do that they miss our on awesome things. I know this because I speak from experience. As for the traveling, it's pretty much all I do with my money because it's what I like to do. You'd be surprised how much you can save when you just cut out buying things here and there in favour of saving up :) Thanks for your support and good luck! xx
Hey Kayley, I'm just curious: why did you decide not to go to school for film? Obviously, not that you have to major so specifically in order to someday work in a given field (and I'm one to talk, as a wannabe author majoring in Lit rather than Creative Writing), but I've just been wondering, since you've always been so passionate about so many different aspects of film. <3
@11Juliet Well, I have other interests, they're just not easy to talk about in videos. (My current major is forensic science - not really a video-friendly topic! Haha). So it's not like film is the only thing I feel passionately about, it just sort of seems that way. That being said, after I study abroad, I plan on switching to a school where I can study film production because I've realised that it IS actually what I want to pursue. :)
@owlssayhooot I never assumed it was the only thing you have a passion for, I just meant that it's something you've consistently talked about with love and enthusiasm for the past several years — talk including mentions of your desire to work in the film industry, so I was just wondering.
I am obsessed with the New York Times! As much as I appreciate the internet and youtube I will always love traditional newspapers and I get a bit sad when I think about New Media shredding them, essentially. I don't want beuatifully written witty
news stories to be devalued by society because of quick fix internet info.
@owlssayhooot :L I have never heard of anywhere in England or the city where I live do something like a film festival which is a real shame. I don't know if it's 'cause I just don't look around at the right places or if I just live in a place that is just not for the film lovers or nerds. Even though we do have like three cinemas... Do you have specific sites that you hear of these festivally type things?? Or do you just get lucky? :)
I completely agree with you about documentaries. They give such an insight into the human condition. If you see anything about one called "Nathan Davis is Still Here," I highly recommend it. About a blues musician in the Durham, NC area. Currently making festival rounds.
I will definitely have to look for "These Amazing Shadows." Sounds fantastic!
I really do agree with you about the use of silence. Helene Weigel, who was a famous German actress in the 30s and 40s, was noted for her silent scream, characterised as 'the loudest scream of the century'. Although I often enjoy some Hollywood productions, I often feel they don't use silence to it's full potential, being one of the most powerful weapons in any director's pocket.
@johnnyfezzer You notice a score a lot more when it's hardly there. Silence makes people uncomfortable, which is what it is supposed to do a lot of the time, but people don't like it. So it's not used in Hollywood productions as much. =/
I love hearing about this festival. Film is probably may favorite form of art and literature, and I just love talking about it and hearing about it. You're making me desperately want to go see all of these! I wish we had a film festival close by.
I'm liking this series of videos a lot! Have you seen Norman yet? I watched the trailer you posted on Tumblr and I was wondering what you thought of it if you have seen it.
Documentaries are a wonderful genre, in my opinion. I can't even describe what they do for me. I really wish we had a film festival like this where I live.
you talk way too fast

@gypsiecat1 The hair is natural, the colour is not. But thanks for making sure she didn't compliment me; wouldn't want it getting to my head xD

@owlssayhooot Sorry. I wasn't trying to troll I swear!!! It just caught my attention that there were diffrent colors. I do like your hair though.

owlssayhooot 8 months ago
@owlssayhooot I never assumed it was the only thing you have a passion for, I just meant that it's something you've consistently talked about with love and enthusiasm for the past several years — talk including mentions of your desire to work in the film industry, so I was just wondering.

I am obsessed with the New York Times! As much as I appreciate the internet and youtube I will always love traditional newspapers and I get a bit sad when I think about New Media shredding them, essentially. I don't want beuatifully written witty
news stories to be devalued by society because of quick fix internet info.

@suchaspacecadet You should definitely see the film, then :)

@DutchPachaSmurf Haha, anyone can go to a film festival. I just happen to live in the city and seek it out xD
owlssayhooot 8 months ago
@owlssayhooot :L I have never heard of anywhere in England or the city where I live do something like a film festival which is a real shame. I don't know if it's 'cause I just don't look around at the right places or if I just live in a place that is just not for the film lovers or nerds. Even though we do have like three cinemas... Do you have specific sites that you hear of these festivally type things?? Or do you just get lucky? :)

Kayley, i swear you're getting prettier in every video :)

Although I often enjoy some Hollywood productions, I often feel they don't use silence to it's full potential, being one of the most powerful weapons in any director's pocket.
johnnyfezzer 8 months ago
@johnnyfezzer You notice a score a lot more when it's hardly there. Silence makes people uncomfortable, which is what it is supposed to do a lot of the time, but people don't like it. So it's not used in Hollywood productions as much. =/

@musicnut91 How HASN'T seen at least Bowling for Columbine?! Plus, I've seen Fahrenheit 9/11, Sicko and Capitalism.

What about mockumentaries?
habojspade 8 months ago
@habojspade I only really appreciate them in the form of television shows, like Modern Family. Overall, I'm not a big fan of pointed comedy.

God, I love when you talk about film. Holy shit. Lol.
