I've said it before and I'll say it again. Want to know why Pete got kicked out of the Beatles? Look no further than this video. Can't even keep a straight beat!
shows he had a good beat on the drums an like ringo who would prefer to wave his hair and nose about and not get stuck into playin the drums like pete, nuff said.
i thought pete best died in a bar fight... wen he was perfoming ina bar wit the beatles. the ppl sed get off stage, n pete best refusd soo they killd him...
The drumming was fine... the whole group was a bit of a lash up of guys having some fun with Pete guesting I think - but no reason to dis the drummer. Don't get the "changing every 30 seconds" jibe - he played the song consistently all the way through.
And this is the reason why he got kicked out of The Beatles. 'his style didn't fit the music. I'd be pissed too if the drummer was changing what he was doing every 30 seconds.
Back in the sixties there was a phrase "He is a Ringo Starr," which meant that he had very little talent but was lucky to be in the presence of extremely talented individuals. Ringo can't sing or write songs. Ringo was nothing without the other 3 as he is now, yet I am sure the other 3 would have been very big without Ringo.
dont forget the George Martin point of view about this ¨i need a powerful drummer for the record¨and then Ringo join, Brian Epstein had to give the news of the other five decision to Pete Best. regards from México.
Spinitch.....girls used to sleep in Pete's garden and kiss his front door..they used to scream at Pete on stage ignoring Lennon and mcartney....Hindsight is great...how many fabulous musicians are walking around with no arse in their trousers..it's not just about musical ability..it's called star quality.you either have it or you haven't..think about it.
At best, no pun intended, Pete is your average drummer, a dime a dozen. His playing is erractic at times. The bottom line to the Pete Best story is that he had little talent compared to the other Beatles, and he tried to take the spotlight from the others because of his good looks. Sorry Pete, It takes talent to hang with John, Paul and George. Ringo was a more stylish drummer that could sing and knew his place by letting the band act naturally, again no pun intended.
Pete Best is a good bloke, and it was sad what happened to him...but that's life, and you are right..he was an adequate timekeeper for the early BEATLES, and Ringo was considered the number one drummer in Liverpool at the time, so the decision made sense, and as history has shown his drumming was a major component of the magic BEATLES sound.
I need to meditate now,......Pete, Petey, PETER.....put the guitar down and get a job. My head hurts now, thnx. This is extremely lame. WBut you gotta admit, Pete is more famous than you. lol
ONE MORE THING....No matter who does this song, they ALWAYS fuck up at the solo outro like you guys just did. I mean, how fookin hard is it to play this song? Apparently, it is.
I was there that night. Later the same line-up (with the Dead Elvi drummer, not Pete Best) did a great cover of "Helter Skelter". Also, Buckethead got on stage and did a wild guitar solo over the Peter Gunn theme. Dead Elvi, can you post these videos as well? They should be great!
I don`t know, you listen to those Decca audition tapes, Pete is playing pretty lame. He plays the same beat and the same drum rolls over and over. He may be playing better now, but back then he pretty much sucked.
Ringo has nothing to be ashamed of, his drumming was great on Abbey Road as well as the White album.
As for Pete, his drumming is good but George Martin would have made him feel worthless. This happened to Charlie Watts and others where they couldn't play everything but they were kept in the band because they can rock 50's style. Pete is having career now. I just wish he treated George a little better.
It was said that Pete made fun of George's youth just verbal jabs. George wasn't what you say, hip. He wrote home to mom and dad to say he was okay while on the road. Pete would tease him when the girls would come and he would back out. I think he was trying to break him out of his shell a bit by giving verbal jabs.
Unfortunately, George hurt easily and made this known to management according to a bio by Marc Shapiro.
Thank you for that bit of info. That would explain why George was STILL so unreasonably adament regarding Pete's dismissal 35 years later. Where sensitive people go, jabs can hurt their feelings for years or even for the rest of their lives. I feel bad for both George and Pete. It sounds like micommunication by Pete and an over-reaction by George permanently altered both their lives in a bad kind of way. How sad.
It sounds like the only "bad thing" George got from firing Pete was a pass to the top and a better friend. I doubt I can convince you of Ringo's drumming abilities or his huge influence on the drumming world (matched grip, anyone?). But I will say this -- Ringo earned and deserved his spot, and I've got Paul, George and John on my side when I say that. After all, who was the only Beatle to play on at least one solo album of all the others?
George Martin didn't understand rock n' roll drumming. When Ringo came along, George wanted him to be replaced as well but the Beattles said no. What George and the Beatles did was work behind his back which drove Ringo crazy especially after "Rubber Soul" when they got away from the rock. It was until Ringo quit during the White Album, that George worked to Ringo's talents with those funny fills due to the fact he was left-handed forced to be right-handed by his mom.
Get a clue, Pete was always a fill in drummer so the band could get booked for their gig in Hamburg, a warm body with a drum kit. When the Beatles went professional they got one, Ringo. Go listen tewden Ringo rocks with all his fill ins here. No "Misery" beat here, this is why George Martin and the other three wanted Ringo and not some guy with a kit and who's mom ran a club.
I don't know but I do know that Ringo actually quit a couple of times during the "White Album" and "Abbey Road". I do know that some of those drum tracks were actually by Paul who played all the drums on "Band on the Run."
Yeah, Paul kept erasing Ringo's parts and then recording over them with his own drumming. Bit of an ego I think. That's also him playing lead guitar on Georges song "Taxman"
Pete Best invented the heavy thump thump bass drum beat they called mak schau in Hamburg. This beat is still about today. I still think he was thrown out of the band because he wouldn't change the way he wore his hair.
What an enjoyable foot stomper this is! I'll bet I'm not the only one to say that Ringo can't drum a infectious groove like this. (Sorry Ringo fans; but the truth is the truth.) Pete was and still is Best.
Your are right. Ringo was a good country/pop drummer that followed along with whatever tempo the rest of the band set. Pete was a great rock drummer that set the tempo for others to follow.
I'm surprised that you and I were the only ones to discuss the Pete Best/Ringo controversey. I suspect we may be showing our age. I think your assessment of Pete Best setting the tempo vs. Ringo's following along is dead-on accurate.
I think Pete had great "feel." It was a matter of styles. McCartney and Harrison were the real problems, not the drummers. McCartney would get lost between the three and the next one. Harrison apparently had problems with a drummer who was solid on the one instead of the backbeat. Ringo probably was one of the best drummers in Liverpool. There are eyewitnesses that say Pete was the best.

On all the interviews George gave on the Pete issue, it seemed to me that George was and remained unfair to Pete up to the very sad end of his life.
Pete mistreated George? That's the first I heard of this. Please elaborate if it's no trouble.
