It's amusing how they always keep the Galaxy class starships' registrations out of view so that no one realizes that they're all the NCC-1701-D Enterprise.
@namedonimpulse They didn't always. In a later episode, one of them gets close enough so we could see it was the USS Galaxy herself. (Apparently the class namesake survived longer than three of her younger sisters.) :)
What i still dont get is why the hell does Starfleet send Miranda Class starships to massive battles... You see them everywhere... Since most of them wont make it out of a battle alive (or even the ship still intact) they might as well use the computer to use it to kamikaze or something.
@TheLastPieceOfBacon - Mirandas are basically the filler ships: token ships to include so you can see actual federation casualties and such, but not important enough to make people wonder why it doesn't become a plot point that such-and-such a ship was destroyed.
This battle is so unrealistic. I've accepted that they have spaceships, and warp drives, and every other coool space tech and weapons, but the battle is so illogical. They're in space!!! Why are hundreds of ships huddled in a tiny area where there is barely enough room to manuver?
you have long range weapons and a completely open battlefield where you can attack from literally any direction. why in the bluehell would you group your ships into a close formation where if the enemy misses one they may hit another? where a crippled ship has a high chance to hit a friendly ship or even friendly fire becomes a real issue? Why are these ships not spread in EVERY DIRECTION and why are they not hundreds if not thousands of miles apart from one another?
This part of DS9 is arguably one of the best space battles in the entirety composing DS9, TNG, and Voyager. It's also one of the few where the Federation's equivalent of a "fighter" ship shows up, the Peregrine. And it presents a clear case for the Defiant being likely the most powerful of any ship in the Federation, including yes, the Enterprise.
@Pyradonis They were actually really desperate at this point in the war. They were pulling old ships out of mothballs to fill the ranks of destroyed ships. The Federation pulled out all the stops to retake DS9 because if they didn't, the war was as good as lost. At the point this battle took place, it was literally a matter of hours before the wormhole mines were disabled and the Dominion were able to simply pour through.
Look at what Star Trek has been reduced to. Starships dogfighting over a space station... Klingon officers serving in Star Fleet... Kirk stealing a car and getting beat up in a barfight... A super-human android wanting to be more human... Suliban fighting a temporal cold war with the past... Biological lifeforms assimilating one another into a collective... This is most illogical, Captain. Most illogical indeed.
I was always surprised with how 'conventional' these battles were, why wasn't everyone venting plasma or focusing polychron particles through their deflector arrays or something? So uncreative :P I also love how the ships are flying so close together they crash into eachother every time gets hit, if only space was infinite right?
You know what would have been funny if when the to fleets were still waiting to attack a little ship maybe some sort of cargo ship (not involved in the war) just came out of warp between the two fleets and just have a WTF moment before running off
@miloootic Ya, notice how DS9 never used Intrepids or Sovereign classes in their space battles? Even though those are newer ship classes that clearly would be used in these battles..I think the reason they did this was so as not to confuse the audience into thinking it was either Voyager or the Enterprise E (since the movies came out around this time).Diehard Trekkies obviously would know its not either ship on DS9, but others might not.
At 1:22, A Klingon Vorcha cruiser partially passed THROUGH a Cardassian ship..I think the CGI dept probably got a little confused with so many ships in the shot at once..
This just gets better with age. Compared to what budgets are for TV shows now and the sophistication of CGI today, they did a magnificent job back in the late 90s and still put a lot of today's shows to shame.
Time for some pining for the good ol' days methinks...

Never seen this stuff, but, I'd guess on the shields that at least as far as technical reasons would be the shape of the fields might make it so that the ships cannot move as close to each other as they are here without bouncing off of each others shields. Also, by lowering shields, firepower and engines could get a bit of a power boost from the unused shield energy. Just a random guess though.
@HelmutVillam - hell yeah...look behind the two shootin' up the Galor and you can see 1 rushing in and another back in behind the second Galaxy shooting as well. Awesome video :)

@KrazyKommieKiller B5 always managed the best ship damage and destruction imo. It still has the crowning moment of space fights of the moment when mid fight for Babylon 5 it cut to show the Omega Destroyer 'Churchill' a mass of rent armour and fires. Back in the days where ships tended to explode it was a gut wrenching show of the potential of CGI.
@ilikemyhamthankyou98 I WAS'NT SAYING ANYTHING BAD PERSONALLY I LIKE STAR TREK AND STAR WARS TOO BUT, I WATCHED THAT EPISODE OF D.S. NINE BACK IN 1998 THAT'S HOW OLD THIS EPISODE IS THATS WHY I SAID THAT WAS THE SHIT!! IT'S A GOOD EPISODE I SAY THE BEST EVER!! REAL TALK!!
never likeed DS 9 the space battles were too fake considering the range of the weapons...i think the special effects team had a contest on how many startships they could cram into a screen shot
Flying in formation in space = bad idea. Your movements become predictable and you become an easy target. Just fly one junk ship loaded with antimatter into the middle at warp 9 and collide with the centermost ship. Boom. No more enemy.
I know I can't be first person to notice this but wasn't there a point when ships could withstand more than two hits? I think defiant is only ship with shields.
Starfleet designers are terrible, why must we always have the warp engines be attached to pylons and then the hull? if the engines get shot off, the ship is screwed.
why not mount the engines on the hull like the defiant?
@MrCanadianComedian it's definitely not, aircraft dont have armor like land vehicles, they are designed have a strong airframe while be as light as possible, so no armor plating(yet).
you're thinking of the advantages of military aircraft performance against a commercial aircraft, which doesnt involve into damage resistance by design.
@CrypticWatcher From what I've read most Federation Starfleet ships have their warp nacelles mounted on pylons to minimize the radiation danger to the crew. The Defiant class which is a new design has the nacelles moved in to the minimal safe distance but are more heavily shielded from the personnel areas of the ship.
they made this more a fighter craft battle then a naval battle like it should of been. Come to think of it, makes no sense not to use small fighter craft in a massive war like this.
@obsidian179 all these ships do, even the little marquis fighters. idk why this wasn't shown in the battle. maybe because they wanted to show shit blowing up?
@obsidian179 If they had left the shields on then the Federation would actually have to have an intelligent tactical plan other than throw wave after wave of what should be useless attack fighters at the Cardassians in the hopes of getting them to stupidly move out of position. And if they left the shields on the battle would have taken days to finish. Can't fit that long of a battle into a single episode.
@obsidian179 the dominion had the ability to pass the federations shields (im guesing others as well) so their attacks kept hitting the hull straight away and in the star trek uniform hulls werent much
@CymruAlteran Actually, they came up with a countermeasure with that very early on. If you are referring to why we don't see shields, according to the producers, it would simply be too expensive and difficult.
@obsidian179 I should think the Cardassian phasers have been significantly upgraded by the Dominion, allowing them to punch through shields more easily.
I you think about all the Star Trek spin offs that could be made, there is the early comand of Picard when he comanded the Stargazer, there is alot of history not told with the first Cardasian war, there is alot of history with the many years of Federation vs Klingon war, Star Trek Enterprise just started to touch on that before the plug got pulled.
It's amusing how they always keep the Galaxy class starships' registrations out of view so that no one realizes that they're all the NCC-1701-D Enterprise.

Miranda class ships seem to have a history of getting owned by just about everything

Massive starships, now with the lifespan of a Tie-Fighter. What happend to Star Trek ?
TTOTheTrueOne 10 months ago
The 2nd smallest ship in the entire fleet is the only one that didn't take damage, wtf!
starflame34 10 months ago
How the Defiant got through all that carnage unharmed is beyond me.
MrMcb1990 10 months ago
@MrMcb1990 If you watched the episode they suffered a lot of internal damage getting through.
eyeofbast 10 months ago
@eyeofbast Starfleet vessels, strong on the outside, weak on the inside even with such sleek, fast, streamlined ships like the USS Defiant.
MrMcb1990 10 months ago
never likeed DS 9 the space battles were too fake considering the range of the weapons...i think the special effects team had a contest on how many startships they could cram into a screen shot
RJF1966 10 months ago
Flying in formation in space = bad idea. Your movements become predictable and you become an easy target. Just fly one junk ship loaded with antimatter into the middle at warp 9 and collide with the centermost ship. Boom. No more enemy.
fredthefrowner 11 months ago
I know I can't be first person to notice this but wasn't there a point when ships could withstand more than two hits? I think defiant is only ship with shields.
Chessbama 11 months ago
Starfleet designers are terrible, why must we always have the warp engines be attached to pylons and then the hull? if the engines get shot off, the ship is screwed.
why not mount the engines on the hull like the defiant?
CrypticWatcher 11 months ago
@CrypticWatcher Most of these ships were not designed for combat.
MrCanadianComedian 11 months ago
@MrCanadianComedian that's saying commercial aircraft can have their engines to fall off while military aircraft shouldn't
CrypticWatcher 11 months ago
@CrypticWatcher Is it not easier to shoot the engine of a commercial aircraft than a military one?
MrCanadianComedian 11 months ago
@MrCanadianComedian it's definitely not, aircraft dont have armor like land vehicles, they are designed have a strong airframe while be as light as possible, so no armor plating(yet).
you're thinking of the advantages of military aircraft performance against a commercial aircraft, which doesnt involve into damage resistance by design.
CrypticWatcher 11 months ago
@CrypticWatcher so right
TheStargatefan1000 11 months ago
@CrypticWatcher From what I've read most Federation Starfleet ships have their warp nacelles mounted on pylons to minimize the radiation danger to the crew. The Defiant class which is a new design has the nacelles moved in to the minimal safe distance but are more heavily shielded from the personnel areas of the ship.

they made this more a fighter craft battle then a naval battle like it should of been. Come to think of it, makes no sense not to use small fighter craft in a massive war like this.
vguyver2 11 months ago
I think the MIranda class is the redshirt of starfleet.

Why are there like 20 Enterprise D's?
EliteAdmiral 11 months ago
@EliteAdmiral there galaxy class.. by that time they could make more of them..

Maybe the dominion used special tech to drop other starships shields and use troops to attack the Feds.
GunUmDown82 1 year ago
Remember when starships used to have shields?
obsidian179 1 year ago 74
@obsidian179
They needed all power to fire the phasers
Snowwie88 11 months ago
@obsidian179 all these ships do, even the little marquis fighters. idk why this wasn't shown in the battle. maybe because they wanted to show shit blowing up?
xKILLZONAx 10 months ago
@obsidian179 If they had left the shields on then the Federation would actually have to have an intelligent tactical plan other than throw wave after wave of what should be useless attack fighters at the Cardassians in the hopes of getting them to stupidly move out of position. And if they left the shields on the battle would have taken days to finish. Can't fit that long of a battle into a single episode.
Fbueller129 10 months ago
@obsidian179 iirc they said it would have taken too much time if they rendered shields for each ship
DShadow911 10 months ago
@obsidian179 the federation are playing with the Mythic Scull on ;)

@obsidian179 I think everyone's shields went down pretty quick, with that much action going on
pacificimporters 8 months ago
@obsidian179 "We can't repel firepower of that magnitude!"
andrewxc1335 8 months ago
@obsidian179 the dominion had the ability to pass the federations shields (im guesing others as well) so their attacks kept hitting the hull straight away and in the star trek uniform hulls werent much
CymruAlteran 8 months ago
@CymruAlteran Actually, they came up with a countermeasure with that very early on. If you are referring to why we don't see shields, according to the producers, it would simply be too expensive and difficult.
aventine62 6 months ago
@obsidian179 I should think the Cardassian phasers have been significantly upgraded by the Dominion, allowing them to punch through shields more easily.
BMWM3GTRLOVER 7 months ago
@obsidian179
its cause of the dominion weapons, they have to use different shields.

roush26 1 year ago
I you think about all the Star Trek spin offs that could be made, there is the early comand of Picard when he comanded the Stargazer, there is alot of history not told with the first Cardasian war, there is alot of history with the many years of Federation vs Klingon war, Star Trek Enterprise just started to touch on that before the plug got pulled.
