  • My choir performed this, and it was suicide. We were terrible, after months of practice. This is incredible.

  • Could it be more folk-song like? Yes. Could the vowels be a little more characterized? Yes. I for one find the variety of tempo refreshing, it doesn't sound like a patter song. And it is strophic, so variety is appropriate, who wants to hear the same thing over and over. Sommiel, very classy - this conductor has forgotten more choral rep than you will likely ever know. Tempo and changing time signatures are two distinct events, you can maintain a consistent tempo and have mixed meter.

  • The feeling is totally wrong (in my opinion).

This song is about gossip, the girls should sound mean and the men, drunk. In moderation, of course. This is NEWFIE English, where are the diphthongs? This is one of those rare songs in which diphthongs give it character. My high school did it Much, much, much better. Trust me, it sound better with a newfie accent. This is all wrong.

  • hmmm...they definitely interpreted this piece well. the tone wuality could've been better. no choir is perfect, but every choir can work towards perfection. i only wish they did a better job of working at it.

  • Yikes. Awful tone. Awful tempo (Too slow. While I agree that it's frequently done "faster than comfortable," shall we say, this didn't have any dance whatsoever to it. Perhaps the pirate had one leg?).

When the University of Illinois has a choir worse than a high school, something's gone horribly wrong.

  • It started out ok, But They took it was too slow in the middle. I'm not sure if the director meant to do that, but It dragged A LOT. "sally is the pride..." section and on was WAAAY to slow and boring.

  • It was slower...but that is a characterization of that section. It was intentional...if you listen you will hear that it returns to tempo. Too often this piece is done at breakneck pace at festivals...big deal. Anyone who can count can shout their way through it., IMHO.

  • Haha, singers who can count? Good luck...

Yes! I have sung this piece, with this arrangement by this composer. Great fun, and very challenging, and it requires a skilled director!

  • While I agree that this piece is too often done at breakneck speed, the middle sections are so slow it's sucked the life out of it. In a perfect world, they would keep the same tempo for the beginning theme and go a bit faster for the Sally and Uncle John.

This piece is very hard to catch the tempo. The time signatures change from measure to measure in sections. What I found rather icky about this one, has everything to do with the conductor having a rather large stick up his butt.

  • @XJosieViscousX

it's actually arranged that way in this version :-)
