A light echo is an expanding paraboloid slice through interstellar dust that is illuminated by the outburst. I never got that until I saw a NASA figure published on space dot com.
What's really profound is that a light echo "appears" to expand faster than the speed of light! The figure explains it well. I can't put a link here but will email it to anyone who asks.
