Great tone, the tyranny with that pre is doing a great job, i will be ordering a Lundahl & a Cinamag to upgrade some ribbons, an astonishing stock passive ribbon i have found is from a company we just got mic's from Recording Tools Germany (Oktava) MRP-01 the transparency is shocking, I am literally in love... with the sound of the MRP-01, i do like the duel short passive Cad on Metal... Hope to do a shoot out on these... soon.
wana learn those chord progressions youre playing there. the mic picked up everythiing i mean stuff woulnt have expected like the slight pop whit the pickup selector.
greg, how gain hungry is this mic? i plan on using it with an Apogee Duet for mobile recording at my rehearsal space but i don't know if i will require a beefier preamp to run this microphone.
@sehnsucht77 I think it's pretty standard for gain. Not sure of the amount of dB gain in the Duet though. Perhaps check with Cascade and get their thoughts.
This mic/amp rig is really similar to what Buddy Miller has been using with Robert Plant. Really beautiful tones and playing, as always! Thanks for the demo!
How much difference is there between the Stock Fathead and the one with the Lundahl transformer? Trying to compare this mic with a Audio Technica AT4040 condenser mic?
I'm trying to decide between the "Stock" Fathead and the AT-4040 condenser mic for recording my Martin Hd-28 acoustic and also my electric guitar via 2x12, 4x12 cabs.
Can I have your 2 cents? One thing that scares me is that they say Ribbon mics are so delicate.
@freeblade99 Thank you, glad you like the demo. Sure a nice channel strip can be beneficial to all tracks being recorded by preventing "sonic haze" from building up in the mix. However IMO, a great mic-pre doesn't make an "average" mic (or any average sound source) sound amazing, but rather just gives a more defined and detailed sonic capture of the average source. Royers are great certainly but I love these Cascades.
@GregVmusic (Oups, deleted my first comment by mistake !!! damn...)
Thanks for the reply. I'm definitely going for a Cascade, sounds amazing, I was wondering whether an Apogee Duet 2 for example would do the job as a good mic-pre for this one...
Hey I just picked one of these up and I am a little concerned about the mic placement, SPL's etc... When using it on my beefy JCM800 half stack, how far, on-off cone, and how loud should I be cranked?
I've only used the Cascade Fat Head II in the studio and love it. I'm sure you could use it live with a small ensemble but be aware it's a figure-8 pattern so may not be the most appropriate choice for isolation.
Sounds great Greg, very rich but it doesn't get as blurry as I thought it might. The mic would seem to have a very nice price/performance thing going on.

@hawg427 Sorry I've never compared the two mics. In genral, ribbons are more delicate but it's more the warm rich tone they offer IMO.

sitting right beside the amp and mic, doesn't picking guitar get picked up or bleed in as well?

@SunnyCool No, the amp is louder than the guitars acoustic sound.
