Fingerprint scanners have the capability to detect live or dead fingers. Its not as simple as removing a finger anymore and using that. Also any decent finger print scanner will have the capability to store all of your finger prints, not just an index finger.

That's all well and good, but not very reliable.. The aforementioned severed finger, or just a bruised finger whereas the print is unrecognized, ie a cut or swollen..
