actually, it's quite strange that your artwork looks more rough with graphite and smooth with mechanical... cause typically, it's harder and less accurate to work with mechanical pencil! in any case, you're artwork is fantastic :D

hey to make the portrait look more realistic i can use graphite pencils, cuss i planing drawing a huge linkin park poster and i wanted it to pop out look your pearl jam pic,,,

yes graphite pencils are teh best to get your work to pop... I highly recommend it...

nice, so i start first with a soft pencil then go over it with the graphite, which are the ones you use for the pearl jam,

I recommend tortillions or paper stubs for shading... Kleenexes work well also. I use derwent graphic pencils.. there are others but The lead for this ones seem to work well.. i believe it goes from 9b to 2h.

Great artwork!!!! I do pencil drawings too. I started with graphite and now use prismacolor art pencils. Have you ever tried color pencils? Check out my video.

thank you very much.... well...now i typically stick with graphite... however the hyori lee one was done entirely in mechanical pencil...3 mm and .5 mm... this is another reason for its lighter quality cuz i didnt use graphite at all.... the ones above hyori lee and the separated drawing was mostly all done in mechnical... they are highly more detailed but youtube compresses the videos so they are appear worser quality.

Mechanical pencil is graphite, also. You should move into charcoal (sticks or pencils). They'll give you darker darks and don't have the sheen that graphite has. The only drawback is how messy it is. You'll need a kneaded eraser, also.

charcoal is good, but its extremely difficult to get into detail with charcoal... i especially use kneaded erasers regardless if its charcoal or graphite... but i have done only 2 drawings in charcoal in my deviantart.
