2.) It saves Japan money by not having to build an expensive military when the US can fulfill that role.
3.) It provides a constant presence for the US in the Pacific area to quickly respond to threats such as N. Korea or other smaller threats, as well as provide instant response for Humanitarian aid.

I was in the US Air Force stationed at Kadena from 1980 - 1983. During that time the Okinawans and American forces got along very well. I was treated extemely kindly by the Okinawans when I lived off base. It is a shame that the behavior of a few bad apples has done so much harm to the relationship betwenn the Americans and Okinawans. I cannot blame them for how they feel and I hope things change for the better in the future.

Yes, i live here in Okinawa. I've lived in Japan for over 8yrs. Half of the bar/cub owners on gate 2 street are owned by foreigners, not Japanese/Okinawan, mostly Filipino's. The cars are very cheap pieces of crap, and most of the car dealers surrounding the bases are also owned by foreigners. The Okinawa economy is already crap, but it would recover very quickly if the bases left.

Okinawa would not be able to survive with out the US living there. I know Okinawa wants to become a "Hawaii" and attract tourism. I don't believe this will work. The island is a bit run down. And the US needs the military presence here because of N.Korea and China. Yes, China is "our friend" at the moment, but they are communist as well and we can not take our chances. If we closed down shop here, we would not be the only ones suffering if we left.

Right now, Marines have to be out of places that serve alcohol by midnight. The first weekend this restriction went into effect, countless business owners were at the bases/city halls complaining about how it's hurting their business.

The Japanese view the American forces as it's protectors with the best military and equipment the world has to offer. I was in Okinawa , leaving just before Reversion 72. We had demonstrations routinely. One union strike closed down the bars Nov-Dec 70?. Miraculously the strike was over for New Years, as shops/bars owners were P.O.ed loosing a ton of money. Koza came alive again :)

I can understand why there's a riot, but some people seem to be confused-- this is Uyoku running the protest, a group from the mainland. Okinawans typically don't openly incite massive outrages, despite any hidden anger. This group's always wantedAmericans out, and the raping (my friend knew the girl personally) just gave Uyoku an excuse to act. I've lived in Okinawa a long time, not anymore though and I have to say none of the native people there deserve this.

Reasons
1) Japan invited the US military to maintain a constant presence and mandated a certain amount of troops to stay in Japan for protection of their country.
2.) It saves Japan money by not having to build an expensive military when the US can fulfill that role.
3.) It provides a constant presence for the US in the Pacific area to quickly respond to threats such as N. Korea or other smaller threats, as well as provide instant response for Humanitarian aid.

But I can tell you this, Okinawa was originally a independent country, known as the Ryukyu Kingdom. The only reason why it became integrated with Japan is because the Japanese invaded the island prior around the 17th century. By the 20th century, the Japanese military had forced okinawans to fight by conscripting them into the army, just like they conscripted the Koreans...

I was in the US Air Force stationed at Kadena from 1980 - 1983. During that time the Okinawans and American forces got along very well. I was treated extemely kindly by the Okinawans when I lived off base. It is a shame that the behavior of a few bad apples has done so much harm to the relationship betwenn the Americans and Okinawans. I cannot blame them for how they feel and I hope things change for the better in the future.

Furthermore, you can't blame them for being angry: while Okinawa is a tiny part of Japan, the large majority of US airbases are stationed in Okinawa. The US should say to Japan "if you want us to stay, then spread the bases out evenly." As it is, the Japanese government makes the minority Okinawans take the brunt so that "mainland" Japanese don't have to deal with it.

Don't believe me that it damages the Okinawan economy? Well when I grew up here there were all these privately owned mom and pops stores. Almost all of them are gone cause. What happened? Family Mart,Hot Spar,Lawsons. Go to Okinawa city or Koza and the small mall thing are 80-90% closed up. Why big Mainland Japanese companies adn supermarkets.

For those who don't know Shintoshin,Oroku,and Hamby were American bases. They gave it back and now the land owners sold the land to Japanese companies. So the money spent there doesn't circulate on okinawa and get deposited in a Japanese bank in Japan.

As a civilian living in Okinawa and married to an Okinawan, I completely agree that many of the bases here should be shut down. The first thing I would close would be the Awase Meadows golf course. Why does the USMC need its own golf course when they could just go a few miles down the road and use the one on Kadena? That is extremely selfish!

Whether these people like it or not, the US cannot leave that Okinawa base. Its stratigically one of thier most important bases to counter chinese or north korean threat to Japan. Easy to understand why they protest its because they dont really understand the importance of US presence there. I would do the same if everyday loud planes flew over my house while i was sleeping.

Yes, i live here in Okinawa. I've lived in Japan for over 8yrs. Half of the bar/cub owners on gate 2 street are owned by foreigners, not Japanese/Okinawan, mostly Filipino's. The cars are very cheap pieces of crap, and most of the car dealers surrounding the bases are also owned by foreigners. The Okinawa economy is already crap, but it would recover very quickly if the bases left.

Not really, that was true more then 10yrs ago, but not today. The modern Okinawa economy is more dependent on Japanese money from mainland then the little US money we bring in. The most the American bring in is Housing. The Air Force and Americans pay lots of housing costs for living off base. The local national workers are paid by Japanese Government. If we all left, Okinawa could recover quickly, especially with the mass building and tourist surge that would result.
