A wonderful performance by both singers! And i am great amazed by Anton Dermota' style of singing. It is so elegant and calm! Many thanks for sharing, dear Janja.
Further biographical notes on Miss Steingruber: she sang the title role in Berg's Lulu in the first recording released on LP in the early 50's and, later, in a live RAI broadcast with Maderna that you can find on CD. She was also soprano soloist in the world premiere of Boulez's Le visage nuptial in Cologne in 1957 with the composer conducting.
Not only is this NOT Hilde Zadek, the photo at the start of the video is actually Ria Ginster! The soprano is Illona Steingruber with Dermota. I will post Zadek's much superior version on my channel.
Mein Gott! Wer hat das gepostet? Danke, danke, danke, danke! Bitte liebe Sänger und Sängerinnen, die ihr je vorhabt diese traumhafte Arie einmal zu singen, hört Euch diese Aufnahme an! Immer und immer wieder! Hilde, Du warst die Größe!
Thanks so much for posting this. As Amonasro100 noted, there is a quality of haunting sadness and yearning in this recording that makes it so great. Anton Dermota is one of my favorites for his ability to capture these qualities.
I agree with musikgeni: It´s the best version I know from this wonderful piece of music (Most of the times, tenors scream the part of Paul, but Dermota sings!) - and again many thanks to you my dear for posting such a treasure!
I think you mean Tauber and Lotte Lehmann! Their recording - with Szell - was made just 3 days after the Berlin premiere in April 1924.
Dermota, who sings Paul here, was due to sing Don Ottavio at Covent Garden on 27 September 1947, but he stood aside to let Tauber - already suffering from advanced lung cancer - make his last appearance on the operatic stage.
Zadek studied the whole double role of Marie/Marietta for a projected staging of Die tote Stadt in 1950 but, thanks to a typical intrigue, it was cancelled.
I don't know about that. I got the aria with these names. But she recorded the aria, as shown here:
" Dermota, Anton (ten.) 10" el. Harmona 14004 +Hilde Zadek (sop.): Glück, das mir verblieb (mx.526)/ Nacht auch Sorge trüb "Tote Stadt" (Korngold) mx.527
2 ". This is from the site Phonopassion - Antiquariat und Archiv historischer Tonträger ...
You're right about. picture. I got it also from Internet - someone must have it mislabeled.
Yes she did record it, but alas the track you have is not it so that site is also wrong! I have uploaded the actual recording on my channel - have a listen and you will hear the difference. The channel is called BRENDANGCARROLL

But the version with Richard Tauber and Lotte Lehmann is made 20 years before this record.
If once is listening carefully you can hear that in this duett is some sadeness
( in Deutsch eine gewisse Traurigkeit)
which takes the pain and horror Jewish people had to suffer just e few years later ahead. Korngold had a vision of the upcoming future.

@100Singers Have you heard Hilde Zadek with Dermota? I's VERY special, more intimate and more in tune; the tempo is slower and more expressive too.

this is the best version of this duet here on youtube. tauber and schumann are good but such an old recording.

Yes, you are correct. I made a further research of the Internet and it seems that the singer is Ilona Steingruber. I'll correct the info.

Thank you so much! It makes Korngold's biographer very happy!

@musikgeni Nobody beats Hilde Zadek with Dermota in this music: slower, more expressive and intimate, and the orchestra far superior.

Es gibt die ganze Konzertaufnahme von Beethovens "Leonore" mit diesen Darstellern.
