  • i've seen lesson books with varying ideas on learning 4th position after tth 1st position, or do you recommend 2nd position, 3rd position.... what is best?

  • "if you are a NORMAL size..." DAMN. treated my life. lmao !

    curse my tallness.

  • lol f holes

  • My A string is not as crisp as it should be when I change positions and sometimes when I do vibrato. Should I change my string or should I just practice my vibrato? (Although my vibrato sound just fine in first position.)

  • Great Classes Professor.

    Pretty nice!

  • Hi, I am learning the cello and have a question. What would the fingering be to play two ADJACENT notes on any two strings. Ie to play G on the D string and then D on the A string. Would I use my index and middle or would i just use my index and rest it across both strings?

  • Thank you. a big help...

  • Are these lessons available on DVD, suitable for use in the United Kingdom?

  • OH! its john stewart from the daily show whats up man

  • i just changed from violin to cello and i have no idea what to do i have t teach myself and i have no idea were first position is is so much different from violin ...help

  • I've been playing now for 7 years and when I was learning basics these videos would have been more than helpful, I wish I would have had a teacher as competant as yourself :)

  • Is it spelled Jon or John, Mr. Stewart? =P

I'm sure people tell you this all the time, but all I can think of is The Daily Show.

  • I watched some of your other videos and your music is beautiful :)

  • Thank you!!!,

im so fucking sick about hearing

    all these assholes who

    say they can play better.

This guy is a amazing cellist..

  • Perhaps Mr. Stuarts lessons are not for you, then. Bear in mind that other cellist are no longer in 6th grade and have to obtain instruction elsewhere. Good luck with your studies.

  • I just bought a Cello and I

am looking forward to using your material to learn to play it. Your videos are great

  • you're really good... the most informative video on this brilliant instrument CELLO :D thanks

  • the cello looks like a double bass

  • You're an experienced teacher, I can see that! I just bought a cello and your lessons ensure I have a head start when I begin cello lessons next month *wink* Thanks a million from Malaysia.

  • great teacher!! graziieeee milleee

  • Great lesson! I bought a cello about a week ago and I have tons of questions. You´ve answered lots of them with this video. Thank you very much!!! I really appreciate your teachings. Daniel - Costa Rica

  • Thank you very much. I've been playing Viola in my school orchestra for 5 years (this year) and I'm changing to Cello, this was very helpful because I don't get much help because of the odd change... Heh, thanks again.

  • Thank you so much..I have just start to learn cello (by myself) and your lesson is great¡¡¡...you answered a lot of questions I had....thanks and best regards from Chile...Andy

  • thanks a lot for your lessons !

  • Im learning how to play, and these videos are a great asset - thanks for taking the time to put this up and look forward to watching the rest.

  • thank you !

  • thank you :)

  • Thank you very very much( from italy)...your lessons are very clear

  • hmm....You did know that the Finest and most REAL music came from Cellos, Violas, and other instruments in that area that inspired guitar playes and drummist.

  • JennaJenna12,

First of all, learn to spell. The fact you can't do so leads me to believe that the instrument is smarter than you.

Second, bloodsucker1992 is right. If it weren't for cellos, violins and violas, and others, the guitar and drums would not exist.

Besides, guitars and drums were popular in the 50s.

Now...they're just overused and repetitive. However, a cello's sound can vary in so many ways, it always sounds unique and always sounds beautiful.

    Try again.

  • thank you so much..i just rented a cello..i've never played before and am having a hard ime finding a teacher..these videos are a great help to get me started.

  • I wanna learn how to play the cello so bad but no one around here plays and I don't know where to get one.

  • as a beginner it is best to find somebody locally who has a cello that they are not using that you can rent for a year or so (ask a local cello teacher if they know of someone - they should do) once you get to grips with it and if you still want to play i suggest going with your teacher to buy a cello. make sure your teacher approves otherwise it is a major waste of money (try it out in the shop and ask if you can take it home for a week or so to practice your pieces on it)

  • appreciate ur work 2 tyvm

  • I appreciate your work! thanks! hope you keep it up!

  • Great video! Thanks!

  • Excellent material for a beginner like me ^.^ Thx.

  • that was very interesting ^^ tnx I'm about to play cello so I can use the cello for dummy explanation ^^ really helpfull =)

  • does it make a huge difference for an adult to play a 7/8 scale cello, instead of a 4/4 scale?

  • Thank you ... I've just started playing cello and your video definitely helps... thanks again & have a great life ! :)

  • Excellent! Thank you!

One question: How far forward should the cello's end pin be on the ground from your body?

  • Thankyou, Thankyou, Thankyou!!!

  • I love your work on the Daily Show! Sorry man, had to. I watched your Bach Prelude from Suite no. 1 and liked it a lot. I'm majoring in music ed next semester so I'm gonna get a little preliminary cello work from your videos. You're good, and you care, it really really makes a difference. Thanks!

  • Thanks a lot for all of this!

  • i also have the same chair

  • thank you so much! this and holding bow video solved a lot of questions I have ... I know I should really find a teacher but I can't afford one...

  • Thank you! That was very helpful. I'm currently searching for a teacher, but in the mean time I'm working on my scales, bowing and other basics (I play violin so I'm able to somewhat apply the same basics). It's very helpful to have these videos, esp when I had no clue how to hold the cello!

  • omgsh im so stupid i skipped that part!! sorry, blah.

  • Um..hi again :| yea, everytime i play the C string i always ending up hitting my bow or frog or whatever on my leg and its really annoying. any tips? :[

  • i have the same chair

  • This is very kind of you!I'm a bass player and it's also useful for me.

    Gos bless!

    Serge

  • Thanks very much for this series, I hope you continue to make videos. I know my posture isn't perfect and a bit of my bowing but I would rather learn how to fix them now instead of having problems getting a good tone later.

  • Thank you for your information, i was in a hurry.

  • You are amazing. I am 16 and have been playing for 6 years. i have never had a private lesson. I am really advanced and I even went to the Governor's School for the Arts in my state. I am a child prodigy but you have taught me a lot of things that have taken my playing to another level. THANK YOU!!!!

  • Hey you should have a video podcast on iTunes!!!

I'm not kidding that would be really cool.

  • Good video, thank you.

  • thanks alot

  • Excellent tutorials.. thanks

  • These were excellent reminders, John. Thanks!
