In the national news this morning there was a story about how there is a resurgence of measles ("the worst in 10 years") and they blamed of course people who don't vaccinate their children. Stories like this create popular backlashes against health freedom.

Also, I agree that people should be able to eat what they want but with two caveats:

1)people need to first be educated about REAL nutrition, until then they are not really making INFORMED decisions about their diet

2)if people choose to eat unhealthfully they need to be required to pay the financial consequences of the disease care that will result from that. I don't want to pay for someone's ingnorant behavior. Disease care is bankrupting this country.

Did you know that childhood inoculations are now proven to be the cause of higher rates of child autism? So it's no wonder why more and more parents are opting out of getting their children inoculated. But I remember in the 80's that before I was able to goto kindergarten I had to have record of receiving all the childhood inoculations. They wouldn't let me attend school otherwise. The All Volunteer Military of the U.S. today enter into a contract with the Gov. and preventative medice is part of it, do you know they stopped cholera imm's because they were ineffective? Universal health care has bancrupted every community that has tried it. Health insurance is a product like any other. You can choose to buy it or not. I buy my own independantly...not thru work. I'd say that we would need an organisation, such as the FDA, to keep addictive substances out of the marketplace (such as the high glycemic foods and tobacco that are overmarketed). Also, the medications or treatments we take should be effective and nonaddictive and not advertised to the consumer. Also, we would need a free, govt sponsored, comprehensive, and competitive healthcare system which would take care of our health needs wen we do get sik. Sales tax covers it.

I homeschool my kids. Right now, it's still legal (how regulated will depend on the state). I fear this freedom is only temporary.

To add to that...I think public schools are a great example of dictatorship. Your tax money will go towards funding them no matter what but if your child thinks a certain way or acts a certain way he/she can get kicked out of the school. And the ones who realize this and choose to send their kids to private school not only pay for private school but also taxes for public school. I don't think thats fair. We should be able to choose where our money goes.

When you strip it down to what it is at its core it a decision between 1) I will do what I please with my money and choose my own health care or 2) I will give my money to the government and trust them to provide me with good health care. In the UK you can say no to a vaccination.

In the UK a doctor would not loose his licence for perscribing you anything out of office ohurs unless it killed you and he was drunk at the time.

A "free" government run health service? It seems at least in the UK to never be able to cope however much money is spent on it. Because it is there and people don't have to pay they don't have incentive to look at alternatives such as nutrition. Command economies don't work. Yes it is tough if you are poor, but poverty is a symptom of the banking system, and the burden of big government.

You bring up some good points, but I think you may be missing one of the main arguments in favor of universal health care. It is definitely possible for a government controlled system to become dictatorial, but the current system also has a dictator: money. If someone cannot afford a treatment, they are often forced to forgo it. In such a situation, they often WANT to have drugs or surgery, but something outside their control (cost) is forcing them to do otherwise. Isn't this a dictatorship?

Cost? Well, if you had a free economy where people can get ahead of rampant inflation, so that the poor and/or senior citizens can have more money to spend on health, I think it would be better.

And it's no good for government either. They run up debts.
