The bridge is weak like some of the other songs on this album. Good songs, but just shy of great. Lots of potential. This song is sweet and heartbreaking. I live in MA but they have had it really rough in New Orleans for too long. The government and the "charities" fkd them over.
Great tribute to New Orleans. Sweet song. Speaking some of the lyrics cheapens the performance a little. Makes it sound like Neil Diamond or something. Mr. Stipe's singing has improved over the years. He always had the potential to sing higher notes but couldn't seem to get how to do it. If only he had taken a few voice lessons. He could've tapped into his full range much sooner. Great album. I hope they tour live with some of these songs.
Loved them since I was like 3 and the love grows... But they repeated lyrics, album name: all the way to Reno dunno what song but yeah love it but I didn't like the repeat of lyrics it just makes me upset to hear brilliant singers/songwriters to get this far and do that. But BIG FAN!!! love them soo much x x x x x x
Call it a hunch, a suspicion, or just stating the obvious. I think this song is well on its way to reaching many people in very exquisite way. Personally, this is he best piece of music I've heard in awhile.
I suppose I'm being self-centered, but as a New Orleanian, I feel like he wrote that song for me. I've listened to it several times and I've cried each time. Thank you, Mike.
@strbr68 I saw them in concert last tour. Stipe sounded great. It was the night Obama officially got the dem nod at red rocks. absolutely terrific show. his voice was as good as ever, and the sang every political song in their bag. it was great (i actually agree politically with the band). His ability to sing well hasnt faded. it's the type of songs they do these days. He doesnt seem to sing the verse, just talks it, then sings the chorus. its boring.
REM albums pretty much fall into summer or winter categories. Like fables was winter and green was summer. This one sounds like the lyrics are from the winter and music from the summer.
I wish Michael would remember what made them popular in the first place... It wasn't the message of the songs, it was the music. His voice was just another one of the instruments. These songs filled with breathy, whispered lyrics aren't why people liked them. Don't talk to us. Don't try to convince us of your politics. Just sing!
Love it..but is it just me who thinks Mr Stipe is suffering from writers lyric block? Apart from that I think it's classic R.E.M...musically could be off GREEN
I disagree with claims such as "R.E.M are back." They never left. I disagree with the claim that R.E.M. had been "fucking fooling around." Trying new things does not necessarily equal to fooling around. I do agree with the claims that this is a "great song." Yes, yes it is.
Normally to have a new take means to have a new perspective or to see something differently. Of course with song lyrics artists are often a bit liberal with the meaning of words
Cracker of a song! REM at their brilliant best, not scared to delve into the past to draw inspiration for a moving song with the help of Jacknife Lee bringing the subtlety of melody, lyrics, catchy guitar loops and mike superb vocals all together!
If people think Mr. Stipe & Co. are over the hill they need only listen to this BEAUTIFUL piece of music. They're as good as they maybe ever have been. Get the album out now, please!
This is the kind of song that I will always remember from R.E.M..... I cried when I listened to it. R.E.M. is giving us signals for us to understand that with this album they stopped FUCKING FOOLING AROUND!!!!
appreciating this from new orleans. thanks, boys :)

Leaving R.E.M never easy,

The verses sound a bit like Disappear off Reveal reworked. It's easier to listen to though and better than most music on the radio.

You really can't expect him to have the same voice he did 20-30 years ago. And politics have always been present in R.E.M. songs, like it or not.
